Mitsubishi announces premium upgrades for its 2016 Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid SUV

  • Improved fuel economy, all-electric range and acceleration response
  • New Multi-around View Monitor and Vehicle Move Off Control safety technologies
  • Dynamic Shield exterior design and upmarket interior treatment unique to PHEV

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced body, chassis and powertrain enhancements, along with front, rear and interior styling changes, for its newly revised 2016 Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid SUV.

The upgrades are in-line with the substantial mid-life changes to Mitsubishi’s recently released 2016 Outlander, which delivered a smoother, more responsive on-road performance with improvements to quietness, steering performance, ride and handling.

Further to this, changes to the 2016 Outlander PHEV are designed to deliver better hybrid fuel efficiency and acceleration feel and throttle response, while cosmetic improvements – including design features unique to PHEV – give Mitsubishi’s flagship electric vehicle a more upmarket, high-grade appearance inside and out.

New active safety features – such as new Multi-around View Monitor – which help prevent low-speed parking and traffic accidents will also be introduced with the 2016 Outlander PHEV range.

The 2016 upgrades have been announced for the Japanese domestic market, where the updated Outlander PHEV makes its global market debut in July.

Exterior design

Just like the 2016 Outlander, the new plug-in hybrid version of Outlander features Mitsubishi’s striking “dynamic shield” front design concept. However, the PHEV model is distinguished by bumper extensions, side garnish and exterior decoration designed to evoke a high-quality, sporty impression.

The exterior design is enhanced with a new 18-inch alloy wheel exclusive the PHEV models, with two-tone machined and black gloss finishes.

The Outlander PHEV exterior colour range has been expanded with new colours including Ruby Black Pearl and Quartz Brown metallic.

Ruby Black Pearl is unique to PHEV models, and features a black pearl paint with contrasting ruby red flecks.

The new colours join the existing Japanese domestic colour line-up of:

  • Black Mica
  • Titanium Grey Metallic
  • White Pearl
  • Red Metallic

Interior Design

Outlander PHEV’s 2016 interior is styled to create a luxurious and high-quality cabin space.

The redesigned seats feature new trim with accent stitching, which is repeated in the padded door trim inserts. The seats use styled padding and trim lines which follow the shape of the occupant’s body to provide superior fit and comfort for front and rear passengers.

The premium quality of the interior is reinforced in the all-new four-spoke steering wheel design, which is trimmed with seamless, fine-quality leather for a comfortable grip, and silver steering-wheel mounted controls with a chrome finish.

The instrument cluster is trimmed with accent stitching, while the newly designed large centre console uses a finish to reflect the elegance of Japanese black lacquer used in traditional Japanese craftwork. Black stream patterns and lustrous accents feature in the dashboard and door trim ornament panels.

A power-adjusted driver’s seat becomes standard on all trim levels, and most variants gain the heated steering wheel function.

On-road performance

In addition to 2016 Outlander general improvements to NVH, steering, ride and handling, Mitsubishi Motors has increased the fuel efficiency of Outlander’s plug-in hybrid system by reducing engine friction and overall system optimisation. This represents improved hybrid fuel efficiency of 8 per cent with an official figure of 20.2km/l (JC08 mode).

Meanwhile, improvements to electric motor efficiency have extended the 2016 Outlander PHEV’s all-electric range by 0.6km to 60.8km based on JC08 mode.

Launch feel or acceleration from a standing start and overall throttle response has improved with revisions to the plug-in hybrid EV and motor control systems.

The 2016 model introduces new safety technology features, including Unintentional Move Off Control system and Multi-around View Monitor, which gives the driver a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle to assist with parking or negotiating tight spaces.

Unintentional Move Off Control system mitigates impact damage by controlling speed in reverse or forward gear when a driver presses the accelerator by mistake and inadvertently moves toward another vehicle or obstacle. This feature is a factory option on some models.

The 2016 Outlander PHEV will be introduced to the Japanese domestic market on 9 July and rolled out progressively to new and existing markets across the globe.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia will announce details of local specification and availability closer to its local launch.

New Outlander PHEV Takes On Baja Portalegre 500 Challenge

– Developing EV and 4WD technology in X-Country Rallies –

TOKYO, June 18, 2015 – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is to enter an Outlander PHEV, the only twin-motor 4WD in production today, in the Baja Portalegre 500 cross-country rally due to be held in the Portalegre municipality in the eastern part of Portugal October 22 through October 24 this year.

The race vehicle will be driven by Mr. Hiroshi Masuoka of MMC who won the Dakar Rally two years in succession in 2002 and 2003. Mr. Masuoka also will be playing a role as the team captain. The team competing in the Baja Portalegre challenge mainly is constructed and led by MMC personnel including the team manager and technical director Mr. Yasuo Tanaka, Expert from EV Component Research Department, Development Engineering Office and engineering supports by four engineers from his department.

Since its inception in 1987, the Baja Portalegre 500, which celebrates its 29th edition this year, is a cross-country rally organized by the Portuguese Automobile Association. Contestants will be driving approximately 500 kilometers mainly at the high speed over rather flat but dirt roads. The course provides the arena for the 9th Round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup and is known as an event in which rally aces from over the world participate each year as a warm-up to the Dakar Rally, the world’s most punishing event of its type. This competition is organized in three categories – automobile, motor bike and quad – with over 300 vehicles expected to take part.

Based on the production model but with modifications required for a rally car, the Outlander PHEV has been entered by MMC to promote development of EV and 4WD technologies. It uses the production model’s drive battery – which forms the heart of a plug-in hybrid vehicle – but with modifications to its structure to realize greater capacity and output. The control system governing the motors has been modified to deliver a higher output. In addition, the generator and engine which supply power to the battery and motors have been modified to increase power output and boost overall system performance.

As to the body, in addition to the fitting of a roll cage and other safety equipment, off-road performance has been improved in order to take full advantage of the upgraded PHEV system. Detail changes include a higher ground clearance and longer suspension stroke together with larger diameter rally tires. These changes will enhance the Outlander PHEV’s performance limits under punishing rally conditions and the valuable data gathered during the event will be fed back into the development of production cars.

A Word from Team Captain & Driver Hiroshi Masuoka
“Well, here we are entering the new Outlander PHEV in the Baja Portalegre 500. This car has received popular reviews both in Japan and Europe for its smooth and stable driving dynamics which stem from its Twin Motor 4WD driveline. The Baja Portalegre 500 requires competitors to complete the 500 km course non-stop, apart from some 20 minute service times, over everything from high-speed gravel to punishing ‘yumpy’ roads. For a PHEV, this demands the highest levels of drive motor and battery durability. With many competitors in this year’s Baja Portalegre 500, I am driven to show the rally Outlander PHEV’s high levels of driving dynamics and durability which derive from the production model to people from all over the world. With the support of MMC EV development engineers, we will be competing with a view to finishing among the winners using this event as an opportunity to demonstrate the upgraded power of its EV components alongside the advance stage of development of our 4WD control technology aiming to develop plug-in hybrid EV system further in the future. I ask you all to support our efforts.”

In addition to the Baja Portalegre 500, MMC will be providing support, as it has done in 2013 and 2014, in the form of vehicle construction, vehicle provision and an engineering team to the Two & Four Motor Sports team which is entering an Outlander PHEV in the FIA Asia Cross Country Rally 2015 slated to be held from August 8 through August 14, starting in Thailand.

The Asia Cross Country Rally 2015 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Entrants will have to compete over a punishing 2,500km and mountainous route which starts and finishes in the ancient city of Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. For this event where the same specification Outlander PHEV competing in the Baja Partalegre 500 will be used, the Two & Four Motor Sports team will be aiming to have finish among the winners, on the back of knowhow gained in the last two years.
