Mazda reveals lightweight MX-5 concepts at SEMA
Mazda debuted two design concepts based on its all-new MX-5 today at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster concepts take the MX-5’s lightweight fun-to-drive roadster doctrine a step further, reducing even more weight while accentuating open-air driving.
Designers drew inspiration from vintage roadsters. The MX-5 Spyder features a bikini top, Mercury Silver exterior, carbon fibre aero kit, grille intake, lightweight 17-inch Yokohama ADVAN Racing RS II wheels and a Spinneybeck PRIMA natural full-grain leather interior. The MX-5 Speedster, meanwhile, pares the roadster back to the bare essentials – it even has a deflector in place of the windscreen – for an old school wind-in-the-hair sports car experience. Mazda took its weight-cutting passion to extremes with for example carbon fibre doors and seats as well as custom 16-inch RAYS 57 Extreme Gram Lights wheels. The Speedster tips the scales at only 943kg, and is also 30mm lower than the production MX-5 thanks to an adjustable coilover suspension.
“Both MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are uncompromising designs that highlight the core strengths of MX-5,” said Ken Saward, design manager at Mazda North American Operations. He and his colleagues at Mazda collaborated with various aftermarket parts suppliers and performance shops to create the two concepts. “With the all-new 2016 MX-5, we have a clean sheet to show how the aftermarket can go wild on our flagship sports car while staying true to its mission.”
The MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are on display at Mazda’s stand (#11647) in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Centre. The SEMA Show is an annual trade event for automobile aftermarket specialty products organised by the Specialty Equipment Market Association. The 2015 event runs until 6 November.

MAZDA TO SHOWCASE LIGHTWEIGHT PERFORMANCE AT SEMA WITH TWO MX-5 MIATA CONCEPTS
– MX-5 Spyder and Speedster Concepts Bring Vintage Cues into Modern Designs –
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 29, 2015 — The Mazda MX-5 Miata has been an exercise in honing the concept of a lightweight sports car for more than 26 years, created solely for driving exhilaration.
But for the 2015 SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Mazda designers wanted to see what they could do if that idea was taken to the extreme. What they created were two vastly different takes on the fourth-generation MX-5: The 2016 MX-5 Spyder Concept and 2016 MX-5 Speedster Concept.
MX-5 Spyder captures the character of a vintage roadster and translates it into a modern-day design, including bespoke leather interior details that were painstakingly crafted, and featuring a new Mercury Silver concept paint color.
MX-5 Speedster is a study in the extremes of lightweight, purpose-built performance, paying homage to minimalist roadsters of the 1950s. The Blue Ether-painted MX-5 Speedster is uncompromised in its approach to wind-in-the-hair driving, going so far as to eschew a traditional windshield for a lighter deflector.
Both cars are significantly lighter than the 2,332-lbs. MX-5 roadster that customers can purchase at dealers and come with a host of conceptual and aftermarket pieces and fabrication from partners including Racing Beat, Haartz Corporation, ASC – American Sunroof Corporation, Makin Industries/RAYS Wheels, KW Suspensions, Delta Seat, H&R Springs, Lusch, AC&A Manufacturing, Franks Fab Shop, Long Road Racing and SIM Specialty Interior Manufacturing.
MX-5 Spyder and Speedster concepts will be on display at the SEMA Show on November 3-6 at the in the Mazda booth, #11647 in the North Hall.

At the End of the Rainbow is Where You Will Find the ST Pot of Gold
Looking for the best balance of handling and power, FSWERKS has created this well-refined Focus ST. Keeping the exterior clean was a priority; the only changes you will see here are sideskirts, a front splitter and a more aggressive wheel/tire combination. Their focus was on the heart of the ST, giving it more power through better breathing and a short throw shift kit for quicker, more precise throws. To keep the ST a well-rounded overall performance vehicle, they also upgraded the brakes, added a lower front stress bar and anti-sway bar with a coilover suspension to keep everything buttoned up when taking on curvy roads or a track.
