Η Tesla έδωσε μέσω over-the-air αναβάθμισης, την έκδοση 8.0 του λογισμικού της, για την οποία δηλώνει πως είναι η μεγαλύτερη αλλαγή στο λογισμικό της από τότε που το Model S βγήκε στην αγορά. Μια από τις σημαντικότερες αλλαγές είναι το βελτιωμένο σύστημα Autopilot που κάνει χρήση ραντάρ και σε συνδυασμό με τις μπροστινές κάμερες και το νέο software, το σύστημα πλέον αναγνωρίζει καλύτερα τον δρόμο.
Το ενημερωμένο Autopilot κάνει χρήση ενημερωμένων χαρτών, ενώ “μαθαίνει” την χαρτογράφηση του χώρου, μέσω της κοινής χρήσης πληροφοριών από τα μοντέλα της Tesla, επιτρέποντας στα Model S και Model X να φρενάρουν ακόμη και μόνα τους σε συνθήκες μηδενικής ορατότητας, ενώ επιτρέπει στα αυτοκίνητα να μπορούν να εξέλθουν από αυτοκινητοδρόμους, αλλά και να εντοπίσουν καλύτερα άλλα αυτοκίνητα, όταν αυτά θέλουν να αλλάξουν λωρίδα κυκλοφορίας.
Μέχρι σήμερα, το Autopilot ειδοποιεί τον οδηγό να ασκήσει πίεση στο τιμόνι, ώστε να διατηρήσει ενεργό το σύστημα, ενώ αν μετά από ένα καθορισμένο χρονικό διάστημα ο οδηγός δεν ανταποκριθεί, το σύστημα αρχίζει μια δεύτερη διαδικασία ματαίωσης του, διάρκειας 15 δευτερολέπτων, επιβραδύνοντας το όχημα, ενημερώνοντας τον οδηγό να τοποθετήσει τα χέρια του στο τιμόνι, προτού τελικά το σύστημα απενεργοποιηθεί. Στην έκδοση 8.0, το Autopilot απεμπλέκεται στο τέλος της παραπάνω διαδικασίας, και δεν θα επιτρέπει στον οδηγό να μπορεί να το ενεργοποιήσει ξανά, αφού προηγουμένως έχει ειδοποιεί τον οδηγό τρεις φορές για να τοποθετήσει τα χέρια του στο τιμόνι. Ο μόνος τρόπος που ο οδηγός θα μπορεί να θέσει ξανά σε λειτουργία το Autopilot, θα είναι να σταματήσει τελείως το αυτοκίνητο, να το σβήσει και να το ξαναξεκινήσει. H Tesla θεωρεί πως οι βελτιώσεις που έκανε στο Autopilot διασφαλίζουν πως ο αριθμός των ατυχημάτων θα μειωθεί κατά το ήμισυ μέσα σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα.
Επίσης η έκδοση 8.0 φέρνει σημαντικές αλλαγές στο σύστημα ενημέρωσης και ψυχαγωγίας των μοντέλων της Tesla, με την φωνητική αναγνώριση να βελτιώνεται ακόμη περισσότερο, ενώ πλέον διαθέτει και σύστημα προστασίας υπερθέρμανσης της καμπίνας, στη προσπάθεια της Tesla να μειώσει τους κινδύνους κάποιο παιδί ή κατοικίδιο ζώο να χάσει τη ζωή του από υπερθέρμανση στο εσωτερικό του οχήματος. Έτσι η Tesla έχει ρυθμίσει το σύστημά της, κάθε φορά που στο εσωτερικό της καμπίνας η θερμοκρασία ξεπερνά τους 40 βαθμούς Κελσίου, τότε ενεργοποιείται αυτόματα το σύστημα κλιματισμού. Στην έκδοση 8.1, η Tesla θα δώσει την επιλογή στους ιδιοκτήτες να ρυθμίζουν την μέγιστη και την ελάχιστη θερμοκρασία για την ενεργοποίηση του συστήματος θέρμανσης ή ψύξης.
Στις σχετικές ειδήσεις, 126 Νορβηγοί κάτοχοι Model S P85D μήνυσαν την Tesla επειδή ανακάλυψαν πως το όχημα τους αποδίδει 469 και όχι 691 που ισχυρίζεται η Tesla. Η εταιρία απορρίπτει τους ισχυρισμούς των Νορβηγών λέγοντας πως το μοντέλο αποδίδει 691 άλογα, σύμφωνα με την μέθοδο μέτρησης των αρμόδιων αρχών.

Tesla software update 8.0 revamps interface, enhances owner experience & safety for all vehicles
Tesla makes the only cars on the road that continue to get safer, smarter, and more capable over time, thanks to free, over-the-air software updates. While traditional cars have static features, a Tesla is more akin to a smartphone, adding new functionality and enhancements throughout the life of the car.
Software update 8.0 kicks off a significant over-the-air overhaul of the Tesla touchscreen and introduces the biggest UI revamp since the launch of Model S. Customers who purchased their car in 2012 will receive the same value of functionality and improvement as customers who purchased vehicles last month. 8.0 combines a modern look with updates to Autopilot, Navigation with Trip Planner, Maps, and the Media Player for a safer, more advanced driving experience. In an industry-first safety measure, we’re also introducing Cabin Overheat Protection, focused on child (and pet) safety. This feature keeps the car at a safe temperature, even when the car is off, and is made possible by our uniquely large battery packs.
Intuitive media player
The media player has been redesigned and personalized to put your favorite content front and center. Search is now simpler to access and more powerful, accessing streaming radio, live stations, podcasts, and any USB device to help you quickly find what they’re looking for.
Voice commands
Voice controls are now easier and clearer to use. Initiation is quick, and clear visual feedback lets you focus on the road without compromising convenience or control.

Maps and navigation

When at home, swipe the navigation button down in the Maps app and navigation will automatically route you to work. When away from home, swipe down and navigation will route back.

In an industry-first safety measure, we’re also introducing Cabin Overheat Protect, focused on child (and pet) safety. This feature keeps the car at a safe temperature for hours, even when the car is off. This feature is only made possible by an electric vehicle with Tesla’s uniquely large battery packs.
Trip Planner
Trip Planner provides a clear overview of your journey before you leave, with maps that zoom out to show your entire route. Putting your Tesla into Drive automatically starts navigation to your first waypoint.
Autopilot Enhancements
Advancements in signal processing use the Tesla’s onboard radar to persistently capture snapshots of its surroundings, creating a 3D picture of the world. Learn more about seeing the world in radar.
Displays now show angled vehicles as they enter a curve and the Autosteer indicator has been updated to more clearly indicate when Autosteer is engaged. We won’t list all 200 improvements to Autopilot in 8.0, but here are a few additions:

Enhanced safety requirement which disables Autosteer during trip when safety warnings are ignored
Autosteer now navigates highway interchanges
