SEAT to hire 700 workers for Audi Q3 production

  • Company and Generalitat (Catalan government) to train 1,200 job-seekers
  • Gradual incorporation of personnel at SEAT beginning in Spring
  • Project guarantees 1,500 jobs at SEAT

SEAT and the Catalan government’s Department of Business and Employment today signed an agreement for the training of personnel to manufacture the new Audi Q3 at Martorell. The agreement envisages the training of 1,200 people currently unemployed, as well as the hiring of at least 700 workers, to be gradually incorporated into the company beginning this Spring. SEAT is also contemplating the future possibility of hiring more trainees who have successfully completed the training programme, depending on the company’s production requirements.

The agreement was signed this morning by F. Xavier Mena – the Catalan government’s Minister for Business and Employment -, and Josef Schelchshorn, SEAT’s Vice-president for Human Resources. The venue was the company’s Training Centre at Barcelona’s Zona Franca, where part of the courses will be given. The event was also attended by Esther Sánchez – Secretary of Employment and Labour Relations -, and Ramón Paredes, Executive Vice-president for Governmental and Institutional Relations for SEAT and for the Volkswagen Group in Spain.

Josef Schelchshorn reminded the attendees that this important project “guarantees 1,500 jobs, 700 of which are newly created”, and highlighted its significance“for young people currently looking for employment”, since “we offer them the chance to get further qualifications as well as the prospect of working for SEAT, one of the most important and attractive job creators in the country, on the basis of a long-term contract”.

Minister Mena believes that the agreement “brings together two of the overarching principles of the Catalan government – job creation and employability of people through training and skills development. Training is fundamental in order to improve company competitiveness and our economy, and is crucial for people to be able to opt for job positions with a guarantee of success”. The Minister also thanked SEAT and the Volkswagen Group yet again for “their commitment to Catalonia with production of the Audi Q3 at Martorell” and expressed his wish that the project “be crowned with success”.

The training agreement falls within the Forma i Contracta (‘Train and Hire’) programme run by the SOC (Catalan Employment Service), belonging to the Catalan government’s Department of Business and Employment. This programme will cover 100% of the cost of training at companies, in exchange for a commitment to offer at least 60% of those trainees who successfully complete the course a contract of not less than six months’ duration.

Integrated training for candidates with clearly defined profile

The training programme offered by SOC for SEAT has been designed on the basis of the company’s envisaged hiring needs. The courses themselves provide a two-month period of theoretical and practical training, and a total number of 176 hours specifically devoted to production of the Audi Q3. The profile of a typical candidate would be that of an unemployed person, principally with Middle or Higher Vocational Training levels in industrial specialities.

Registration for prospective candidates begins today, and closes in two weeks’ time. Through its network of employment offices, the SOC will undertake the task of short-listing those people interested in the offer, plus job-seekers whose professional profile fits that required by SEAT. Those candidates who successfully get through preliminary tests on the internet and manual skills, plus a personal interview, will be entitled to participate in the training courses.

SEAT is the only company in its sector with the full-range capacity to design, develop, manufacture and market cars in Spain. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting approximately 75% of its production to 72 countries. SEAT is market leader in Spain, and in 2010 reached a trade volume amounting to 5 billion euros, with total sales of 339,500 vehicles.

SEAT employs 13,000 professionals at its three production centres in Barcelona – Zona Franca, El Prat de LLobregat and Martorell, where it manufactures the highly successful Ibiza and León, amongst other models. A fourth centre, the Volkswagen Group production facility at Palmela in Portugal, supplies the Alhambra.

The Spanish multinational also has a Centre of Excellence or ‘knowledge hub’, bringing together more than 900 scientists and engineers whose remit is to be the driving force behind innovation for the number one industrial investor in R&D+i in Spain. In line with its declared commitment to environmental protection, SEAT undertakes and bases its core activity on criteria of sustainability, namely reduction of CO2 emissions, energy efficiency, as well as recycling and re-use of resources.
