Μετά τις φωτογραφίες που διέρρευσαν την Παρασκευή, η BMW παρουσίασε επίσημα τη νέα Σειρά 1 η οποία θα κάνει ντεμπούτο στην έκθεση της Φρανκφούρτης. Στιλιστικά οι γραμμές του μοντέλου είναι πιο έντονες και σίγουρα αν έχεις δει την τωρινή σειρά 1 από κοντά δεν αργείς να παρατηρήσεις τις διαφορές. Η μάσκα θυμίζει έντονα Series 5 / Series 7 και η όλη σχεδίαση υπόσχεται πολλά.
Το νέο μοντέλο έχει κωδική ονομασία F20 και βασίζεται πάνω στην πλατφόρμα που φορά την τωρινή Σειρά 3, κάνοντας την είναι μεγαλύτερη σε όλες τις διαστάσεις από το τωρινό μοντέλο. Η νέα Σειρά 1 έχει έτσι μεγαλύτερες διαστάσεις στους χώρους των αποσκευών (επιπλέον 200 λίτρα) και σε αυτούς του εσωτερικού, εκεί που έπασχε το τωρινό μοντέλο. Ο χώρος των αποσκευών ανέρχεται στα 330 με 360 λίτρα ενώ με την αναδίπλωση των πίσω καθισμάτων σε αναλογία (40/20/40) μπορεί αυτός να φτάσει έως τα 1200 λίτρα.
Μηχανικά τώρα, η νέα BMW Σειράς 1 θα ξεκινήσει τις πωλήσεις της με αποκλειστικά τετρακύλινδρους turbo κινητήρες. Η έκδοση 116i θα φορά έναν 1600αρη ψεκαστό κινητήρα βενζίνης, απόδοσης 135 ίππων, ενώ η 118i θα αποδίδει 170 άλογα.
Σε ότι αφορά τους πετρελαιοκινητήρες, θα υπάρχουν 3 κινητήρες διαθέσιμοι, ο 2.0-λιτρος turbo diesel, που θα αποδίδει 116 (έκδοση 116d), 143 (έκδοση 118d) και184 (έκδοση 120d) άλογα.
Υπάρχουν 2 κιβώτια διαθέσιμα ένα 6-τάχυτο χειροκίνητο, και ένα 8-τάχυτο αυτόματο της ZF ενώ η νέα Σειρά 1 διαθέτει σύστημα Start/Stop και ανάκτησης ενέργειας κατά το φρενάρισμα. Τεχνολογικά υπάρχουν πολλά gadget όπως το σύστημα αυτόματης ρύθμισης της μεγάλης σκάλας, κάμερα οπισθοπορείας, προειδοποίηση αλλαγής λωρίδας, σύνδεση στο internet, σύστημα πρόγνωσης πρόσκρουσης, αυτόματη αναγνώριση οδικών σημάτων, αυτόματη αναγνώριση ορίων ταχύτητας και άλλα πολλά.
