Chevrolet at the Geneva Motor Show

  • World debut for Cruze station wagon
  • Youth concepts Code 130R and Tru 140S: next-gen buyers takes center stage
  • Malibu: An American in Geneva
  • Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system: smartphone integration
  • 2011: Record sales in centennial year

One world premiere, two European debuts, the launch of an all-new and exciting infotainment system and record global sales mark Chevrolet’s participation at the 82nd International Geneva Motor Show, which kicks off today.

The major attraction is the Cruze station wagon, which makes its world debut and joins the hatchback and notchback versions of Chevrolet’s most popular car. Two youth concept cars – the Code 130R and Tru 140S – celebrate their European debut. Visitors to the Motor Show will also get a preview of Chevrolet MyLink, the latest infotainment offering by GM’s largest brand.

Spread over nearly 1,600 square meters, the Chevrolet stand (Hall 1) proudly celebrates its roots and features an American-style diner with car hop girls on skates, who will hand out casino-style chips that can be redeemed for refreshments during public days.

Cruze station wagon

The station wagon appeals to families and people who want a compact car with more carrying space to fit an active lifestyle.

A choice of five powertrains is available for the entire Cruze line-up as of summer 2012. In addition to the current 1.6L and 1.8L gasoline engines, a new 1.4L turbo gasoline engine, a new 1.7L diesel and an improved 2.0L diesel engine complete the powertrain offer. All engines are Euro 5-compliant.

Load space ranges from 500 liters up to the window line in the rear to nearly 1,500 liters up to the roof top with the rear seats folded down.

A number of design changes are being introduced in 2012 for all Cruze models, including the front fascia, modified head-lamp interiors and fog lamps, and new wheel styles. The interior design features additional refinements to the center console and a greater choice of seat finishes.

New equipment and features on the Cruze include keyless entry and start, rear view camera, Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system (see below) and start-stop functionality depending on trim and engine choice.

Youth concepts Code 130R and Tru 140S: next-gen buyers take center stage

Chevrolet is involving young people in the design process to ensure that future generation car buyers are given what they want.

Two examples of this collaboration, the Code 130R and Tru 140S youth concepts, are making their European debut at Geneva. Hostesses armed with iPads are at the Chevrolet stand to find out what youths expect from their future cars and how they live their lives. Their input will be used for further development of future concepts.

The concepts, designed by Nicholas David and Joe Baker from GM’s North Hollywood Design Center, explore the styling and functionality this group of new buyers says they are looking for in a car.

The turbocharged Code 130R is a rear-wheel-drive four-seat coupe with an upright profile. Its aggressive front fascia, Chevrolet fender flares, straight body side, and the Chevrolet crossflag emblem forge a link to Chevrolet’s performance heritage.

The eAssist technology shuts off the engine at stops, smooths torque during acceleration and recaptures braking energy, balancing turbocharged performance with fuel economy.

The front-wheel-drive Tru 140S is an affordable exotic four-seat sport coupe. The three-door hatchback is based off the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze and the groundbreaking Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle.

Inside the concepts, connectivity enables motorists to personalize their cars, a critical element for the current and future youth generations.

Malibu: An American in Geneva

The midsize Chevrolet Malibu goes on sale in Europe with a gasoline engine in spring 2012*, followed by the diesel version in the second half of the year.

The Malibu first appeared on American roads in 1964 and has proved to be one of the most popular Chevrolet cars. The sedan is designed to stand out with its refined exterior looks and spacious, stylish interior. It will serve as the Chevrolet flagship in Europe and other parts of the world.

The Malibu’s aerodynamics, stiff body structure, and wide body and track work in tandem with electronic assists to deliver the sharper ride and handling typically preferred by European drivers.

Features include steering-mounted controls, clear and easy to see central instrument cluster, power-assisted seats, keyless entry and start (PEPS), tinted windscreen, power parking brake and rear parking sensors.

A full-color seven-inch touch screen provides infotainment for driver and passengers. Large icons display the multi-functional uses, including radio, USB connectivity, photo viewer, Bluetooth connectivity and a navigation system on higher trim levels. The screen also conceals storage space for small items, such as sunglasses and wallets.

Customers can choose between a 2.4L gasoline engine with a power output of 167 hp @ 5,800 rpm and maximum torque of 225 Nm @ 4,600 rpm or, later in 2012, a 2.0L diesel rated at 160 hp @ 4,000 rpm that produces 350 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. Both gasoline and diesel engines can be coupled with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The Malibu has been awarded the top European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) five-star rating.

Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system: smartphone integration

The Geneva Motor Show sees the launch of Chevrolet’s new infotainment system, Chevrolet MyLink, which seamlessly integrates motorists’ personal devices, such as smartphones, and transforms their car into their own docking station.

Chevrolet MyLink includes a seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen that makes media selection easy to navigate. The system aggregates content from smartphones onto the display via a USB Aux-in or Bluetooth.

It adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smartphones, building on the voice-activated Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in several Chevrolet models today. The technology will be available with the Cruze and Aveo in summer 2012.

2011: Record sales in centennial year

Chevrolet sold 4.76 million vehicles in 2011, its centennial year, setting a global sales record and helping GM sales to top the 9 million mark. Sales were up in every region, including Europe.

The U.S. led the way for Chevrolet with sales of 1,775,812 cars, up 13 percent. China followed with 595,068 vehicles sold. The Cruze sold 670,000 units in 2011, making it the best selling Chevrolet nameplate.

Chevrolet sold 206,400** cars in Western and Central Europe*** in 2011, an increase of 1,600 vehicles when compared to the previous year, claiming a market share of 1.24 percent. Sales growth was recorded in 20 markets while share was up in 16 countries.

The Spark was Chevrolet’s best seller in Europe with 66,400 vehicles and 5.5 percent of the mini segment.

* In selected markets only

** Preliminary registration figures – total vehicle market (passenger cars and light commercial vehicles)

*** Western and Central Europe includes 37 countries (EU27, Andorra, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and Turkey)
