Mazda at the Paris Motor Show 2012

Mazda’s new-generation flagship has arrived. Featuring highly-efficient SKYACTIV technology and the striking “KODO – Soul of Motion” design, the new Mazda6 sedan and wagon are the focal points of Mazda’s exhibit at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

The spotlight in Paris will also shine on the newly-upgraded Mazda MX-5, now even more responsive and assertive as the unrivalled roadster cruises through its third decade of production. And finally, Mazda will present its CX-5, the vehicle that kicked off a whole new generation of Mazda models and raised the bar for Europe’s compact SUV segment.

The all-new Mazda6

Built to feel like an extension of its driver, the all-new Mazda6 brings together the most advanced form yet of efficient Sustainable Zoom-Zoom driving fun and electrifying KODO styling in the crucial CD-segment.

Uniting a smooth, refined ride fitting for a flagship with the sporty, linear handling obligatory for a Mazda, this is the first Mazda6 to feature the full range of SKYACTIV technology and the first Mazda whatsoever with the company’s unique i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system. This means it’s more powerful and more fuel efficient than ever. Designers and engineers collaborated closely to give purpose to the stunning forms. As a result, there are no compromises: What you get is as good as what you see.

Both the sedan and wagon, being presented side-by-side for the first time in Paris, have overall lengths, wheelbases and interior dimensions that are at or near the top of its segment. That translates into top comfort for driver and passengers alike. But thanks to SKYACTIV’s innovations, the new Mazda6 is even lighter than the current model despite its size.

Powertrains have been optimised to increase output and fuel economy. Chassis and body structures, meanwhile, are stiffer, benefiting for example from greater proportions of high and ultra-high tensile steels. The steering and suspension combine low-speed agility with high-speed stability and responsiveness to driver input at a level of precision unparalleled in the CD-segment. And, in addition to being quieter and more aerodynamic, the new Mazda6 is also a segment leader in terms of safety.

With the signature wing family face and forms expressing such great vitality, strength and agility – all KODO trademarks – the new Mazda6 is a car people will want to drive from the minute they lay eyes on it. And the uncompromising performance and handling mean they won’t be disappointed when they do.

Mazda MX-5 Facelift

Sticking to the basics but always improving: Mazda’s celebrated roadster just became a little more special.

How could Mazda possibly make its bestselling two-seater convertible even more popular? By enhancing throttle responsiveness and brake return for a more rewarding, more invigorating drive, particularly on the winding roads and curves where the MX-5 already excels. And by giving it a more aggressive front-end design, improving pedestrian safety in the process. No added weight, no less reliable.

The Mazda CX-5

The basis for a whole new generation of vehicles, the Mazda CX-5 is shaking up the market for small SUVs across the globe.

When it arrived in Europe in March 2012, Mazda’s all-new compact crossover SUV marked the beginning of the SKYACTIV era. The first manifestation of the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, the CX-5 combines its charismatic looks with unprecedented car-like handling and performance. It’s also one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs available, and among the safest, too, with the maximum Euro NCAP rating of five stars.

2. The all-new Mazda6 –

Stunningly evolved functional design

Mazda’s new flagship simply begs to be driven. Designed to operate as an extension of their driver, both the wagon and sedan versions of the new Mazda6 make their collective debut at the Paris Motor Show. The newest manifestation of the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, these cars are destined to turn heads, drawing upon the sleek beauty of the TAKERI and SHINARI concepts that preceded them. And with ultra-efficient SKYACTIV technology underneath, there are no concessions to performance or fuel economy.

The all-new Mazda6 – now in its third generation – is also the first mass-production model equipped with i-ELOOP, Mazda’s unique brake energy regeneration system. It’s the most recent ingredient to Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, the company’s building block strategy for uncompromisingly efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles. i-ELOOP joins the innovative i-stop idle-stop system and SKYACTIV powertrains, chassis and body (introduced on the CX-5) to set a new benchmark for fuel economy and CO2 emissions (3.9 l/100km & 104 g/km*) in Europe’s all-important CD-segment – without any sacrifice in performance.

Drivers will experience a remarkably linear response from the choice of five SKYACTIV engines (two diesels and three petrol powerplants) transferring power to the wheels via six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The SKYACTIV-Chassis’s clever steering and suspension ensure superior handling in a car that responds to driver input with precision. The SKYACTIV-Body, meanwhile, offers class-leading safety thanks to highly rigid impact-absorbing structures and innovative load paths to disperse impact energy away from the cabin. And to help the driver prevent accidents from happening in the first place, the new Mazda6 features an impressive array of advanced active safety technologies. Even when a collision is unavoidable, they work to diminish its severity for occupants and pedestrians – and even the vehicle itself.

Specially developed for the KODO design, Soul Red Metallic, an all-new body colour, uses a unique process to deliver unprecedented levels of depth, shading and vividness that accentuate Mazda6’s stunning form and character lines. These start at Mazda’s new family face – the signature wing grille and glinting “eyes” with their halo ring light and LEDs extending the wing outwards – and flow through the powerful shoulders and haunches supporting the rear-leaning cabin, and finally, the strong yet harmonious rear.

Pointing to the power, agility and resilience of the new Mazda6, KODO is not just a facade, either. Look at the interior, where form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit built to make driving as enjoyably effortless as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be: Even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards relative to the current model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’s field of view. Passengers await a relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features sporty comfort and segment-leading dimensions accompanied by the latest infotainment technology, including 11-speaker BOSE® surround sound**.

Mazda’s designers and engineers have truly come up with a striking piece of machinery whose looks immediately divulge what’s underneath. Namely a symbiotic blend of sporty, linear performance and smooth refinement that’s destined to make a big splash in the European CD-segment when it goes on sale.

Soul Red Metallic

Perhaps the world’s most emotionally appealing red, Soul Red Metallic is about pure energy, combining highlights, shade and depth in ways that emphasise the dynamic body shapes of the Mazda6’s KODO design.

Mazda uses two base colour coats under the clear coat to make Soul Red Metallic. Each coat serves different functions: The lower base coat, with bright aluminium flakes, serves as a reflective layer, while the upper base coat is a semi-translucent layer with high-chroma (or very intense) red pigment. Light shines through the upper base coat, arriving at the lower coat with a red tint, where the aluminium flakes reflect the light back through the high-chroma red layer.

As a result, strongly illuminated areas of the Mazda6 appear in a deep, intensive red that, like the sun, appear to radiate from within. Shaded areas, in contrast, appear blackish. This wide contrast range, with its unprecedented vividness and extraordinary depth, is what makes Soul Red Metallic so special.

Comfort AND FUNCTIONALITY

  • Sedan features one of the segment’s longest wheelbases (2,830 mm) for a spacious, comfortable cabin; the slightly shorter wagon’s is still larger than the current Mazda6.

i-ELOOP: Mazda’s brake energy regeneration system

Mazda’s new brake energy regeneration system is rather unique. i-ELOOP (short for “intelligent Energy Loop”) is the world’s first passenger car system to use a capacitor to store electricity recovered during deceleration to power the vehicle’s electrical systems, thereby improving fuel economy.

Mazda’s engineers determined that a typical vehicle deceleration phase lasts only about 10 seconds. Realising that the effectiveness of regenerative braking to date has been limited by the charging and storage drawbacks of conventional lead-acid starter batteries, they instead adopted an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), which recharges fully within only a few seconds. An efficient 12V-25V variable voltage alternator generates the electricity and charges the EDLC; a DC/DC converter then steps down the voltage to power electrical components like the climate control and audio systems, with any surplus going to the starter battery.

A full capacitor charge is enough to run the vehicle’s electrical systems for a minute or so. This makes i-ELOOP the perfect companion for i-stop, as there is no need to revert to battery power even when Mazda’s idle-stop system has shut the car off. During stop-and-go city driving, charging often resumes before the capacitor is fully discharged. i-ELOOP can therefore produce most if not all of a vehicle’s electricity needs, whereas normally some of the engine’s output is required just to drive the alternator. By freeing up this engine capacity, i-ELOOP increases fuel economy under everyday urban driving conditions.

CHASSIS & BODY

Together with SKYACTIV powertrains, the SKYACTIV-Chassis and SKYACTIV-Body make the new Mazda6 a thrill to drive, delivering refined, linear handling, segment-leading safety and a uniquely efficient lightweight design.

SKYACTIV-Chassis

  • Optimises the SUV chassis launched on the CX-5 for the longer, lower and lighter layout of new Mazda6.
  • Intensifies the linear connection between driver and vehicle, especially in terms of accelerating, turning and stopping, with:
    • more rear suspension grip than the current model
    • shorter braking distances thanks to chassis stability (as well as a shorter brake pedal stroke and enhanced brake disk cooling).
    • Lighter yet stiffer front strut and rear multi-link suspension optimised for low-speed agility and high-speed stability – and a comfortable ride at all speeds.
    • Electric power assisted steering with class-leading gear ratio adjusts sensitivity to changing driving conditions.

SKYACTIV-Body

  • Lighter yet stronger than current model using more ultra-high tensile steel and other innovations to bolster the body’s structures.
  • Delivers excellent crash safety by more effectively absorbing and dispersing impact energy through the body structure using a multi-load path concept and replacing curved sections with straight continuous structures.
  • Class-leading aerodynamics (0.26* coefficient of drag target value) for better stability and fuel economy.
  • Exceptionally quiet cabin, as undesirable engine and road noise are blocked and suppressed using innovative materials and structures
  • Among the lightest and most aerodynamic compact CD cars available.

* Sedan, depending on equipment level

SAFETY

Mazda’s Proactive Safety philosophy takes a driver-focused approach. Rather than simply letting systems intervene and take control of the vehicle, Mazda gives drivers more “eyes”, so they’re more aware of their surroundings at all times and can thus proactively avoid hazards and avert accidents. i-ACTIVSENSE is what Mazda calls these eyes, an innovative range of advanced sensor-based active safety technology. The new Mazda6 features a wide assortment of i-ACTIVSENSE systems, including:

  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)* keeps a safe distance from preceding vehicles at speeds of up to 200km/h, controlling the speed and brakes when needed.
  • Smart Brake Support (SBS)* also monitors preceding vehicles at speeds of 15-145km/h, warning the driver when the new Mazda6 is too close and braking automatically if it detects that an accident is imminent.
  • Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)* automatically brakes the vehicle to avoid or reduce the severity of front-end collisions in a 4-30km/h speed range, complementing Smart Brake Support at lower speeds and in urban environments.
  • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)* alerts driver of unintended lane changes.
  • Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM)* detects and warns the driver of cars approaching from behind in adjacent lanes, e.g. in the blind spots.
  • Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) rapidly blinks the hazard lights during heavy braking to warn ensuing motorists.
  • High Beam Control system (HBC)* automatically changes between high and low beams to avoid impairing the vision of other motorists.
  • Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS)*, which turns the headlamps to better illuminate curves.
  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA)* controls brake pressure to help prevent the vehicle from rolling during hill starts.
  • Standard ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), brake assist, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and TCS (Traction Control System).

It also has a range of innovative passive safety features like:

  • The highly-rigid impact absorbing SKYACTIV-Body, with more lightweight ultra-high tensile steel than ever.
  • An improved front-end design with larger crumple zones to better prevent cabin deformation, also reducing repair costs following milder collisions.
  • A strengthened cabin cage structure for better side impact protection along with reinforced rear frame and bumper structures.
  • Trim and other interior components redesigned to prevent or reduce injuries to occupants.
  • Improved anti-whiplash front seats.
  • Rear seat components reinforced to help prevent luggage from intruding into the cabin.
  • Standard front, side and curtain airbags.
  • A bonnet and body cowl enhanced to provide more give and better protect pedestrians, especially from head injuries.
  • Bumper designed to protect pedestrians’ legs in case of an impact.

3. Mazda MX-5 Facelift –

More aggressive, more refined, more fun

Lightweight sports cars have come and gone over the past 23 years, but one constant has been the Mazda MX-5. As total production steadily approaches the 1 million unit mark, the best-selling roadster of all time just got a little bit more special. After its latest upgrade, the MX-5 is more aggressive and more responsive yet more refined. It’s safer, too. What haven’t changed are the lightweight efficiency, reliability and affordability that have made the MX-5 such a legend.

After almost a quarter-century of success with the MX-5, Mazda knows what sports car buyers want. Over the years, they have become more environmentally aware and safety oriented, but still unwilling to compromise on styling or driving pleasure. So, when it came time to upgrade the MX-5, Mazda’s designers first asked themselves how they could make the roadster even better looking and more fun to drive.

The solution was to advance the car’s responsiveness, as if it were a natural extension of the driver’s body. To do so, they enhanced acceleration control*, finely adjusting the throttle management program to make it react more faithfully to the driver. The result is a more linear, nimble acceleration, especially when manoeuvring out of curves. At the same time, they optimised the vacuum brake booster to improve brake return control and thus front-rear load distribution, something particularly apparent when braking into curves. The driver has better command over the vehicle, for example on winding roads, for an exceptionally satisfying experience in agility.

The new MX-5 features an aggressive new front grille and bumper design, with a deeper and wider look that also improves aerodynamics by reducing air resistance through the fog lamp bezels and front tires. Dolphin Grey replaces Metropolitan Grey as one of the eight body colour choices available for the soft-top and retractable hard top versions. As far as the interior styling goes, the panel décor and steering wheel spokes have been given a sophisticated yet sporty glossy dark grey finish. A trip computer is now standard, while an anti-glare rear-view mirror has also been added**.

Safety, of course, was also in the spotlight to keep the MX-5 ahead of tougher EU regulations going into effect for pedestrian protection. The roadster is the first Mazda to be equipped with the company’s newly-developed active bonnet system. A sensor at the back of the bumper uses actuators to lift the bonnet should it detect a potential collision with a pedestrian. By increasing the crumple zone between the bonnet and engine, it reduces the severity of pedestrian injuries, especially to the head, and helps save lives. A plastic reinforcement structure was also added to the lower section of the front bumper to better protect pedestrians’ legs.

Under the hood, customers have a choice of the lively yet fuel-efficient 126 PS MZR 1.8 and 160 PS MZR 2.0-litre petrol engines. Power from the 1.8 litre is delivered to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual, while the 2.0 can be coupled either with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Steering and suspension ensure ultra-precise handling, thanks to the ideal 50:50 weight distribution and lightweight design. Mazda’s “gram strategy” to relentlessly exploit all weight reduction potential, meanwhile, has kept the weight of the car virtually unchanged despite its new features. And today’s MX-5 is as comfortable as ever. After more than 20 years, there are still no compromises.

4. The Mazda CX-5 –

A new era at Mazda

The first of the SKYACTIV generation, Mazda’s new CX-5 compact crossover SUV has ushered in a new age at the company and paved the way for a whole new generation of Mazdas. An age of cars that are safer, more efficient and easier on the environment yet even more fun to drive than ever. A revolution has begun.

On stage in Paris: Extraordinary torque and responsiveness combined with outstanding handling at all speeds in one of the safest vehicles available anywhere today. The Mazda CX-5 marks the company’s triumphant arrival to Europe’s very fast-growing and compact SUV segment.

As the first Mazda equipped with the entire range of SKYACTIV technology, the CX-5 represents a major leap forward for Sustainable Zoom-Zoom. This is Mazda’s strategy to increase the average fuel economy of its model line-up by 30% by 2015, but without compromising on driving fun. It’s about achieving the ideal balance between performance and efficiency with Mazda’s characteristic Jinba Ittai (car and driver as one) feeling made famous by the legendary MX-5 roadster. In a nutshell, the Mazda CX-5 reacts to driver input exactly as one would expect.

Mazda’s engineers managed to come up with innovative ways to trim weight while at the same time actually improving strength and safety. The superb passive safety offered by the completely redesigned SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis is paired with a considerable range of active safety systems, such as Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support and Lane Departure Warning System, and a driving position offering the widest field of view in its class. The upshot: occupant and pedestrian protection that earned the CX-5 the maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

The sophisticated, roomy interior is indeed a tribute to the CX-5’s intelligent design. From clever Karakuri features like the three-way folding rear seats to the advanced infotainment system, the cabin gives a new meaning to flexible convenience. And with a bold exterior based on Mazda’s new “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, it looks as good as it drives.

From the performance and safety, predictable and responsive handling, class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions to the interior comfort and adaptability: The CX-5 has raised the standard for compact SUVs in its segment in Europe since its arrival in early spring, offering a range of exciting new technology that is the basis for a new generation of Mazdas.

THE ALL-NEW MAZDA6 – ON SALE JANUARY 2013

  • The all-new Mazda6 Saloon and Tourer go on sale in January 2013, priced from £19,595 to £28,045 (on-the-road)
  • Powered by Mazda’s award-winning SKYACTIV 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines with the choice of six-speed manual and automatic SKYACTIV transmissions

SKYACTIV technology suite to set new benchmarks for fuel economy and CO2 emissions in the CD segment
Mazda’s new-generation flagship Mazda6 is to go on sale in the UK in Saloon and Tourer versions in January next year following it’s unveiling at the Paris Motor Show on 27 September. Prices will start at £19,595 OTR for the 2.0-litre 145ps Saloon SE, rising to £24,865 for the 2.0-litre 165ps Tourer Sport Nav. Diesel variants start at £21,795 for the 2.2-litre 150ps Saloon SE through to £28,045 for the 2.2-litre 175ps Tourer Sport Auto Nav.Built to feel like an extension of its driver, the all-new Mazda6 brings together the most advanced iteration yet of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom driving and electrifying ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ styling. The combination of highly efficient SKYACTIV technology and the striking KODO design will ensure the Mazda6 is perfectly equipped to tackle the competitive CD-segment.

The all-new Mazda6 – now in its third generation – is the first mass-production Mazda model to be equipped with i-ELOOP, the Japanese company’s unique brake energy regeneration system. It’s the most recent ingredient to Mazda’s building block strategy for uncompromisingly efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles.

i-ELOOP joins the innovative ‘i-stop’ idle-stop system and SKYACTIV powertrains, chassis and body – first introduced on the Mazda CX-5 – and positions the new Mazda6 as the benchmark for fuel economy and CO2.. With fuel economy as high as 68.9mpg* and emissions as low as 108g/km* – without any sacrifice in performance – the Mazda6 is the new class leader.

Mazda’s range of high-efficiency SKYACTIV powertrains includes two petrol engines and two diesels paired to six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. SKYACTIV-G petrol engines include the 2.0-litre 145ps and the 2.0-litre 165ps both producing 210Nm at 4,000rpm. SKYACTIV-D diesel engines include the 2.2-litre 150ps producing 380Nm at 2,000rpm and the 2.2-litre 175ps producing 420Nm at 2,000rpm.

*Target data

Together with SKYACTIV powertrains, the SKYACTIV-Chassis and SKYACTIV-Body make the new Mazda6 an engaging and rewarding drive, delivering refined, linear handling, segment-leading safety and a uniquely efficient and lightweight design.

Chassis and body structures are stiffer, benefiting from greater proportions of high and ultra-high tensile steels. The steering and suspension combine low-speed agility with high-speed stability and responsiveness to driver input – at a level of precision unparalleled in the CD-segment. In addition to being quieter and more aerodynamic, the new Mazda6 will also be a segment leader in terms of safety.

The SKYACTIV-Body offers class-leading impact protection thanks to highly rigid impact-absorbing structures and innovative load paths to disperse energy away from the cabin. To help the driver avoid accidents, the new Mazda6 features an impressive array of advanced active safety technologies. Even when a collision is unavoidable, passive safety technologies work to diminish its severity for occupants and pedestrians – and even the vehicle itself.

In the interior, form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit design designed to make driving as enjoyably and engaging as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be: even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards relative to the current model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’s field of view. Passengers will appreciate the relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features segment-leading space, accompanied by the latest infotainment technology, including an 11-speaker BOSE® surround sound audio system (available on Sport models only).

Specially developed to highlight the features of the Mazda6’s KODO design, Soul Red Metallic is an all-new body colour, which uses a unique process to deliver unprecedented levels of depth, shading and vividness that accentuate new Mazda6’s stunning form and character lines. Blue Reflex Mica, Meteor Grey Mica and Jet Black Mica also debut on the all-new Mazda6.
