Entering the cold season with Mercedes-Benz

Enjoying winter to the full

Stuttgart. With the right equipment, winter need not be quite so daunting for drivers. Quite the contrary in fact – in a vehicle fitted with good tyres and the appropriate accessories, you can relax and start to enjoy the joys of winter and a variety of winter sports. And to help you on your way, Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH and Mercedes-Benz sales partners offer a whole host of appropriate, tailor-made equipment for drivers of all of the company’s vehicles.

Helping you to reach your destination: when the going gets really tough in winter, snow chains are often the only thing that can keep you on the move. And the fear which fitting these aids to traction once held for drivers has now long gone: fitted in just a few easy steps, chains can also enable you to tackle steep, snow-covered slopes. The Mercedes-Benz range includes appropriate solutions for all models dating back to the 1980s.

Safely getting to grips with the cold season: they are called winter tyres – but in fact they should be called cold tyres. This is because as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, the rubber compounds used in winter tyres provide better grip than summer tyres. Furthermore, an increasing number of countries are making the use of winter tyres compulsory. Mercedes-Benz partners offer a range of complete winter wheels specially designed for different vehicle models. They are also able to take care of fitting as well as storage of wheels.

All aboard: whether you are into skiing, sledging or snowboarding, with roof racks and roof boxes individually tailored to fit all models you can transport all of your sports equipment safely and conveniently to your destination. All of the roof transport solutions are based on the roof carriers from the Alustyle series.

Neat solutions: glistening snow and brilliant sunshine – this is the perfect winter’s day. But in between, filthy weather including slush or drizzle is often the order of the day. It is precisely in such adverse conditions that the genuine accessories from Mercedes-Benz are able to protect drivers and their vehicles against the dirt. And there are also storage systems to help maintain order in the boot.

For fashion-conscious après-ski fans: well-equipped both for the bitter cold and fun-packed mulled wine parties – the Mercedes-Benz Collection offers a variety of clothing and accessories for both men and women which are not only functional but also chic.

Mastering snow and ice with the confidence of a pro: black ice, emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres on slippery surfaces – in critical situations in the winter it is crucial to keep a cool head and remain in full control of the vehicle. The winter training of the Mercedes-Benz Driving Events prepares drivers specifically for such situations and practices intuitive, skilful reaction at the wheel.

Snow chains

Helping you to reach your destination

When winter really takes a grip of the country and new, heavy snowfall and steep gradients make the going tough, snow chains are the perfect solution to get you safely to your destination. The Mercedes-Benz range offers an appropriate solution for all models dating back to the 1980s.

When choosing chains it is not only the vehicle type which is important, but also the size of the tyres being used. Mercedes-Benz service partners are happy to advise Mercedes drivers about the most suitable snow chains to use and have a detailed list of the correct snow chains for the relevant vehicle. Mercedes-Benz has worked closely with world market leader RUD in compiling a tailor-made range of chains. RUD chains not only meet the strictest of quality requirements, but also comply with all relevant regulations, for example Austrian standard 5117 which lays down the requirements for the approval of snow chains in Austria.

Another important factor is ease of fitting. Laboriously fumbling around with numb fingers in the cold – this is now a thing of the past. Modern snow chains can be easily fitted and often do not require retensioning. How simple fitting can be is demonstrated in the series of photos depicting the fitting of easy2go snow chains by way of example:

The “easy2go” model from the world’s market-leading chain company RUD is specifically designed for vehicles with front-wheel drive and therefore tailor-made for the new A and B-Class. Its patented mounting device with permanent tensioning effect (PTD = Permanent Tensioning Device) makes manual retensioning of the chain unnecessary. To protect easy2go during transport or storage it is contained in a nylon carry bag. Other advantages are simple fitting and removal while the car is stationary, and integrated wheel protection.

The high-quality “RUD-matic Disc” convenient bow-type snow chain is the ideal choice for saloon and estate models with rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC, as well as SUV models from Mercedes-Benz. With its tough plastic ring (disc), this chain offers perfect protection for light-alloy wheels and wheel trim. Since the fastener is on the front side of the wheel, the chain can be quickly fitted and removed. The chrome-manganese-alloyed micrograin stainless steel is visually adapted to match light-alloy wheels and meets the highest of standards in terms of appearance too.

It can get expensive without chains: European regulations

In European countries, different regulations apply with regard to the carrying and fitting of chains (see overview table starting on page 8). In Germany for example, fitting chains is compulsory on stretches of road signposted with mandatory sign No. 268 (tyres with snow chains). Drivers who fail to comply with this requirement may be subject to a fine, which in Germany and Switzerland for example can amount to €70, while in Italy it can be upwards of €70, and in France and Austria upwards of €35 and €36 respectively.

The requirement to use snow chains can also apply to all-wheel drive passenger cars, SUVs and off-road vehicles. In the chapter entitled “Winter operation”, the owner’s manuals of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles explain to which axle snow chains may be fitted. There is also a note to the effect that ESP® can be switched off to increase the traction of the snow chains. Legally, the speed limit for vehicles fitted with snow chains is restricted in most countries to 50 km/h.

After use, the snow chains can be put back in the supplied carry bag. At the end of winter, chains should be washed in warm water and left to dry out thoroughly. Snow chains should not be oiled.

Complete winter wheels

Safely getting to grips with the cold season

They are called winter tyres – but in fact they should be called cold tyres. This is because as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, the rubber compounds used in winter tyres provide better grip than summer tyres. Furthermore, an increasing number of countries are making the use of winter tyres compulsory.

Mercedes-Benz partners offer a range of winter tyres and complete winter wheels which are specifically designed for different vehicle models and can be recognised by the “MO” (“Mercedes Original”) mark on the tyre side wall. They are also able to take care of fitting, as well as storage of unused wheels.

Why winter tyres are essential in the cold season

Shorter braking distances, better acceleration, more stable cornering: in the cold and on snow and ice, winter tyres are simply better at everything. Only winter tyres make use of special rubber compounds containing a high percentage of silica or natural rubber, making them suitable for cold conditions and also keeping the tyres flexible at low temperatures. The softer the rubber, the better it is at adapting to the road surface. The result: more grip when braking, accelerating and cornering. In contrast, summer tyres harden in the cold, resulting in poorer traction. Even the latest driver assistance systems can be ineffective in this case.

The safety benefits of winter tyres are particularly impressive when it comes to braking: with winter tyres, an average passenger car needs around 35 metres to come to a stop from a speed of 50 km/h on a snow-covered road. With summer tyres, the braking distance increases to 43 metres. This could have fatal consequences: in the worst case scenario, in this comparison the car fitted with summer tyres would still be travelling at 22 km/h if hitting an obstacle, whereas the car with winter tyres would already be stationary. This is why of course it is essential for all-wheel drive vehicles such as SUVs to be fitted with winter tyres.

When accelerating, winter tyres are even more superior on snow, providing up to 80 percent better traction, irrespective of the type of drive. This helps not only with moving off briskly from traffic lights, but also in the event of a quick evasive manoeuvre when trying to avoid a dangerous situation – for example when coming upon the end of a traffic jam. Better grip when cornering can prevent the vehicle leaving the road or sliding into oncoming traffic.

The special tread layout design interlocks the winter tyres with the snow or ice-covered road surface and generates a high shearing effect which further increases traction. Numerous pleats in the tread bars increase the effective transverse edge length and therefore also enhance grip. Noise levels and ride comfort are similar to those of summer tyres.

Which winter tyres should I buy? The snowflake shows the way

Almost all winter tyres are initially recognisable by the “M+S” symbol (Mud and Snow). Yet this designation is not sufficient for local traffic conditions: M+S is not subject to any statutory testing and can be assigned by manufacturers at their own discretion. This is why in 1996 the snowflake symbol was introduced, comprising a snowflake outlined by a mountain with three peaks. A tyre bearing this seal of approval must first pass a standardised test with defined criteria. As part of this the test tyre is compared against a standardised example. If it achieves values which are seven percent better than the reference tyre then it receives the snowflake symbol. As such it will then mostly rank in the top third of the performance spectrum for winter tyres, as demonstrated by magazine tests.

From 2012 additional countries are making winter tyres compulsory

In many European countries there is either an absolute obligation to fit winter tyres, or an obligation to fit them in certain situations. In 2012, the compulsory fitting of winter tyres is also being introduced in Luxembourg and Romania. The following table provides an overview of where and when such tyres and snow chains must be fitted:

EU tyre label describes three important criteria

Since 1 November 2012, the tyre label has been required by law throughout the EU.[1] The goal of this measure is to create greater transparency and provide the end user with information on grip in the wet, energy efficiency and external road noise. Tyre manufacturers test summer tyres, all-season tyres and winter tyres for the label classification according to the same criteria and classify them accordingly. Mercedes-Benz monitors the allocation of labels by carrying out random sample checks of the values during the tyre development and production process.

In the case of summer tyres in particular, these criteria describe a number of important characteristics. The qualities important for winter tyres, such as braking, traction and cornering grip on snow and ice, have not yet been covered by the label. In order to guarantee safety in the widest variety of road conditions, in addition to a special tread layout and rubber compound, a greater tread depth is also required for winter tyres. This has a negative effect on the rolling resistance and results in a downgrading of the energy efficiency assessment of winter tyres in terms of the tyre label. Even excellent winter tyres therefore have tyre label values which can differ significantly from those of summer tyres.

Transport solutions

All aboard

Whether you are into skiing, sledging or snowboarding, with roof racks and roof boxes individually tailored to fit all models you can transport all of your sports equipment safely and conveniently to your destination. All of the roof transport solutions are based on the roof carriers from the Alustyle series.

They can be mounted in next to no time, and no additional tools whatsoever are required: this is the innovative advantage of the new generation of the “Alustyle Quickfix” basic carriers which Mercedes-Benz Accessories offers for the new A-Class and the new B-Class. The innovative quick-grip mounting is extremely easy to use. The lockable plastic caps are an effective theft deterrent. Close cooperation between accessory developers, body experts and the designers of the new compact vehicles was needed to develop the “Alustyle Quickfix”, and as a result the four attachment points are easily accessible and fully integrated into the roof design.

Just as easy to attach are the new carriers for roof rails from the new
“Alustyle Easy-Fix II” generation, which are available for example for the current models of the M-Class, the GL and the GLK. Here too, just a few steps are needed: pre-tension until the bar clicks, and then tighten by shifting the lever, which once again can be easily attached without the use of tools. The New Alustyle basic carriers are tailor-made for larger saloons and estates – from the C-Class to the S-Class.

Other important criteria in the design of all carrier systems from the range of genuine accessories included optimisation of aerodynamics and the noise level, and also crash testing, which at Mercedes-Benz goes well beyond the legal requirements. All components in the carrier systems meet the highest standards in terms of operating stability and durability.

Overview of available basic carriers:

Basic carrier Model series
New Alustyle CLS and CLS Shooting Break, E-Class Saloon & Coupé, C-Class Saloon & Coupé, S-Class, R-Class
Alustyle Easy-Fix C-Class Estate, E-Class Estate
Alustyle Easy-Fix II M-Class, GL-Class, GLK-Class (with roof rails)
Alustyle Quickfix B-Class, A-Class

Ski and snowboard rack: safe roof transport

When it comes to transporting winter sports equipment on your vehicle roof Mercedes-Benz offers two carrier variants: the “Standard” version of the Alustyle carrier for winter sports use is designed for up to four pairs of skis or two snowboards. The “Comfort” model can transport up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards. A special feature of this variant is its practical “pull-out” function, which makes loading and unloading easy.

Both rack systems are tested in accordance with strict Mercedes-Benz standards. They can also be locked to protect against theft. As an alternative, you can use the large roof boxes, which offer protection against the elements, and secure storage space for up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards.

Roof boxes: a second boot for those winter trips

Genuine roof boxes from Mercedes-Benz are characterised by their practical functionality, elegant design and generous transport volumes. The robust and easy-to-mount roof boxes are available in three sizes, with capacities of 330, 400 and 450 litres. A common feature of the boxes is that they can be opened from both sides. A further bonus is that the three-point locking system on the transport containers provides effective theft protection. The “Alustyle” roof carrier systems, which have been precisely tailored to the body sizes and shapes of most Mercedes-Benz passenger car models, form the attachment base for the luggage boxes.

The miracle space-maker: the roof box 450

The Mercedes-Benz roof box 450 is the miracle space-maker among the portable roof boxes in the genuine accessories range from Mercedes-Benz Accessories, and was thoroughly revised in the autumn of 2011. With dimensions of 220 x 80 x 40 cm, its load volume of 450 litres is equivalent to that of a C-Class boot. This means the box can provide enough space for the winter sports gear of a family of four, for example, and the equipment stays fully protected from dirt and splash water.

The grooved plates, with which the box is secured in the T-slot of the roof carrier, have also been optimised. Just a few turns are all that is needed to tighten them, and the wing nuts have been integrated into the box itself so that they can no longer go astray. Mercedes-Benz Accessories made this change in response to frequent requests from customers.

The shape was also revised, and the “dropping line” geometry reflects the design idiom of current Mercedes-Benz models. As well as the classic colour choice of matt silver, in which the surface of the box is slightly grained, the box is also available in metallic black. The roof box 450 has a load capacity of 75 kilograms, and a net weight of approx. 19 kg, and offers users plenty of space to plan their holidays and leisure time flexibly and according to individual needs. A new feature is the six metal rings to secure the three tension straps, which protect the load inside.

The specially developed accessories, which have been exactly tailored to the interior dimensions of the roof box, offer even more options and greater travel enjoyment. For example, there is the practical, six-piece luggage set. Consisting of four roomy bags and two separate ski bags, it provides optimum protection and convenient transport for four pairs of skis and other travel and sports accessories. An especially user-friendly feature: in bad weather, the bags can be packed indoors, in the comfort of your home or holiday accommodation. The design of the luggage set features typical Mercedes-Benz quality, with the bags being made from hard-wearing, water-resistant material.

Thanks to the handy shoulder straps included in the set, the bags can also be used outside the roof box. Another practical feature is the ski rack insert for the roof box, offering a secure hold for up to five pairs of skis.

The multifunction box: roof box 400

Featuring the same stylish design and practical advantages as the roof box 450, but with dimensions specially tailored to more compact vehicles, is the roof box 400. It has a capacity of 400 litres, and is 70 cm wide and 40 cm high, but just 190 cm in length: this allows the boot lid of the new A-Class to be opened even when the roof box 400 is mounted. Special handles, 80 cm in length and made from an anodised aluminium profile, make it easier to close and prevent the lid jamming when closing. Needless to say, the multifunction box can also be mounted on all other vehicles. The box has an unladen weight of approx. 16 kg and can accommodate a payload of 75 kg.

There is a luggage set for the roof box 400 as well, consisting of three bags together with a ski bag for two pairs of skis, which can be up to 170 cm long. The ski bag is also available separately.

The sports box: roof box 330

The sports box, with a volume of approx. 330 litres, provides additional luggage space in the format of a compact class boot. It is available in the colours titanium metallic and matt silver. A luggage set consisting of four bags and a ski rack insert for up to three pairs of skis is also available for this box as an optional extra. With a payload of up to 50 kilograms, this transport box is also suitable for transporting heavy loads. An advantage of the sports box is that, as well as the box, depending on the vehicle there is still room on the roof for a further ski or snowboard rack or a bicycle rack. The roof box 330 weighs approx. 14 kg, and its dimensions are 220 x 60 x 41 cm.

Simple fitting and practical details

If you need to, you can fit the roof box on your own, without requiring additional tools. This is possible thanks to a convenient sliding fastening system, and also thanks to the low weight of the boxes themselves. High-quality pneumatic springs also make it easy to open and close the roof box, which is splash-water protected and made of high-quality plastic. Using the standard tension straps, valuable cargo can be securely fixed in place.

In the event of an accident, all the roof boxes offer a high level of safety. They undergo stringent German Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV) and “City Crash” testing, and must also meet the rigorous Mercedes-Benz standards that go well beyond the legal requirements. For example, the tilt/sliding sunroof must open and close smoothly even when the roof box is mounted.

Safe and durable thanks to extreme test procedures

Carrier systems and roof attachments from Mercedes-Benz offer high levels of safety and durability which are typical of the brand. Products are subjected to extremely comprehensive tests before being released onto the market. The following is a brief overview of the strenuous test procedure:

The internal crash tests at Mercedes-Benz are conducted at higher speeds and acceleration rates than those required by the DIN 75-302 and ISO 11154 standards, and also the”City Crash”. Although not required by law, the latter test is recommended by the German consumer watchdog organisation Stiftung Warentest, and by the German Automobile Association (ADAC). The test is meant to simulate a typical rear-end collision at a moderate speed in an urban setting.

In tests on the so-called “vibration table” or the vehicle body test rig, the roof and carrier are shaken in an extreme manner. Laboratory examinations are supplemented with extensive driving tests on test tracks and in situations based on real-life traffic. One such test is the special driving endurance test over a distance of 25,000 kilometres with a 50-percent roof rack overload.

The internal corrosion tests conducted on individual components in saltwater sprayers last more than twice as long as the time stipulated in the DIN 75-302 standard. In addition, the products are put through extended corrosion tests while mounted on the vehicle, and are also exposed to extreme temperatures in a climate chamber.

Accessories

Neat solutions

Bitter cold, glistening snow and brilliant sunshine – this is the perfect winter’s day. But in between, filthy weather including slush or drizzle is often the order of the day. It is precisely in such adverse conditions that the genuine accessories from Mercedes-Benz are able to protect drivers and their vehicles against the dirt. And there are also storage systems to help maintain order in the boot.

Anyone who lives in areas where the snow stays put or who regularly heads for the mountains for winter sports appreciates the perfectly fitting Classic
all-season mats
available from Mercedes-Benz for most model series. They are made of robust, washable plastic designed for heavy-duty use, and with their deep sections and raised edges reliably protect fine foot well carpets. The mats are secured against slipping by the genuine fastening system.

The same protection, for example against the snow melting off ski boots, is offered by boot tubs made of impact-resistant polypropylene. They are also available for many model series from Mercedes-Benz and feature a honeycomb structure for locating the separately available stowage box. Some of the tubs also enable the practical Velcro-type fastening of the concertina
load-sill guard
. The guard protects the sill area against scratches during loading – and keeps dirt on the vehicle off one’s clothing.

To make sure nothing gets out of place and order prevails in your luggage compartment on the way to your winter holiday destination, Mercedes-Benz offers different storage organising systems. These include a plug-in module with telescopic rod for flexibly dividing the boot to prevent cargo sliding around. Depending on model series and intended as a complement to the shallow boot tub there is the stowage box. It securely holds objects which might otherwise tip over or slide and can be divided into maximum four sections with adjustable partitioning elements.

For the Easy-Pack load-securing kit, practical concertina bags are available. The folding, removable bags made of robust, washable nylon provide a secure hold for purchases or winter sports accessories. The bags are simply attached by clips to the side mounting rails of the load-securing system. The concertina bags can also be attached to the plug-in module with an extension kit.

Multimedia systems

Reaching the slopes quicker

Getting you to your winter sports venue via the shortest route while avoiding traffic jams is something that advanced telematics solutions are able to offer. They are available for retrofitting to a number of
Mercedes-Benz model series. And entertainment systems for the rear help to ensure that the kids enjoy the journey from the word go too.

The Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone®, together with the Digital DriveStyle app specially-developed by Daimler, enables the seamless integration of the iPhone® 4/4S into the vehicle. Among the highlights are the advanced navigation solution from Garmin®, Google®, online POI search including Street View™ and 3D map view. Further functions include Facebook®, Twitter®, internet radio, AUPEO!™ Personal Radio and the real-time location-sharing system Glympse. Glympse allows you to share your current position in a targeted manner with selected people.

A number of multimedia functions are combined in the Mercedes-Benz telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)[1]. The telephone module with integrated UMTS module and direct connection to the vehicle antenna ensures rapid, stable and safe connection of COMAND Online to the internet. It is then possible to simultaneously use Mercedes-Benz Apps whilst also making a phone call. Text messages can also be read out to the driver.

The Becker® MAP PILOT offers a favourably priced navigation solution for the Audio 20 CD. Advantages include integrated operation via the central controller, output of spoken instructions via the vehicle loudspeakers, display on the screen of the Audio 20, well-hidden location in the glove compartment, as well as the ability to update or expand the system via an internet portal.

With the iPad® Rear Integration Plus docking station, integration of Apple’s® iPad®, iPad® 2 and iPad® 3 models into the rear of the vehicle is both ergonomic and crash-safe. Furthermore, owners will not have to make compromises in terms of any of their functionality. All connections, such as for the headphones, are still accessible. The holder can be tilted and also rotated through 90 degrees. The integrated USB interface can even be used with the charging cable to recharge the battery of the iPad®.

As an alternative, a portable iPad® Rear Integration kit is also available. This bracket is also suitable for iPad®, iPad® 2 or iPad® 3 and is simply attached to the struts of the head restraints, thus it is also easy to remove at any time.

First-class entertainment in the second row of seats is also provided by the Rear Seat Entertainment System, which, depending on the model series, is available as a portable kit, a built-in fixed kit or as a retrofit kit for the Rear Seat Entertainment System as an optional extra.

Mercedes-Benz Collection

For fashion-conscious après-ski fans

Well-equipped both for the bitter cold and fun-packed mulled wine parties – the Mercedes-Benz Collection offers a variety of clothing and accessories for both men and women which are not only functional but also chic.

Small glittering stones adorn an off-white ladies’ knitted hat, which is made from a wool mix and has a fur bobble. The knitted loop scarf, which is also available in the same off-white colour, measures approx. 35 cm wide and 144 cm long. Pink and black stars, meanwhile, are a design feature of the grey scarf. Measure: 190 x 55 cm.

The pilot-style sunglasses are made by Rodenstock for Mercedes-Benz and feature high-quality, blue-tinted lenses providing UV 400 protection. With a 3D star logo located on the side of the arms of the black frame, the sunglasses are supplied in a black, leather-look case.

When well protected against the elements, children are able to make the most of the cold season too: the baby’s peaked cap with ear flaps and featuring a classic grey and turquoise check pattern can be combined with a variety of outfits. With a soft inner lining in grey, the cap measures 46 cm, and its leather label bears an embossed star.

For men: coats to suit any weather and all tastes

The black soft shell coat with hood is made from a material which is not only waterproof and windproof, but also breathable. The cuffs have a velcro fastening, and the width of the coat can be adjusted by means of a rubber cord on the hem. Two zipped side slit pockets, two zipped chest and sleeve pockets as well as an inner pocket with velcro fastening provide plenty of storage options.

Now there is no need to fear those icy storms: the anthracite-coloured fleece jacket is designed to keep you warm with a collar which can be zipped right up around the neck. The fleece material will not develop any small knots thanks to anti-pilling treatment. Visual features include appliqués in matt nylon and a white embroidered logo on the chest area. Both men’s jackets are available in sizes S to XXL.

Also available in a size bigger, namely XXXL, are the driver’s jacket and driver’s gilet. Both are available in anthracite and have a white embroidered logo on the chest area. Mercedes-Benz Driving Events

Mastering snow and ice with the confidence of a pro

Black ice, emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres on slippery surfaces – in critical situations in the winter it is crucial to keep a cool head and remain in full control of the vehicle. The winter training of the Mercedes-Benz Driving Events prepares drivers specifically for such situations and practices intuitive, skilful reaction at the wheel.

With the confidence that comes from being in the hands of experienced instructors, the participants train and explore their personal limits in the breathtaking winter scenery of Austria, Sweden or Finland in vehicles supplied from the Mercedes-Benz model range.

The following is an overview of the various driving safety training and driving events making up the Mercedes-Benz Driving Event schedule for winter 2012/2013:

  • Basic Training Austria: on this one-day course held at the Austrian Fahrtechnik Zentrum (Road Testing Centre) in Saalfelden, participants take to specially prepared tracks to learn how to react when a vehicle gets into a spin and how to brake on ice-covered roads. The exercises include slaloming, braking during cornering, and under/oversteering; participants are also made familiar with driver assistance systems.
  • Advanced Training Austria: participants learn how to safely control their vehicle when faced with typical winter hazards through a series of exciting exercises such as slaloming, braking during cornering, or sudden lane changes. The drifting exercises convey an even greater sense of driving pleasure and dynamism. The two-day course also takes place at the Austrian Fahrtechnik Zentrum in Saalfelden.
  • Perfection Training Austria: on this two-day training course participants approach the physical limits of driving. They go through the different drills at higher speeds. Performing sudden lane changes or emergency braking during cornering is again designed to prepare the drivers for everyday hazards, such as when they encounter obstacles in the roadway or suddenly come upon the end of a tailback. Finally, driving enjoyment is the emphasis on the 2.5 km handling course made of ice: with spiked tyres the participants learn how to keep the car permanently drifting. Event venue: Fahrtechnik Zentrum in Saalfelden, Austria.
  • Sports Drift Training Austria: in the drift slalom, participants learn about the specific point at which the tail breaks away and develop a feel for grip and for vehicle oversteer and understeer. Exercises are also practised with spiked tyres. The one-day training event takes place at the Fahrtechnik Zentrum in Saalfelden, Austria.
  • Perfection Experience Sweden: this four-day, or in some cases five-day training course takes place in Lapland, 150 km south of the Arctic Circle. Exercises such as alternating loads through slaloming or maintaining a drift are covered, as is an analysis of driving style. On a track designed by Formula 1 race track architect Hermann Tilke, participants undergo a rally test. A snowmobile tour, aperitifs at the igloo ice bar as well as a ride as a passenger with a professional driver in the rally taxi round off the training perfectly.

Off-road training events: driving through winter in off-road vehicles

  • Basic Compact Training Austria: participants on this half-day course gain some initial off-road experience by tackling steep descents, driving at an angle and moving off and braking in off-road winter conditions. The training event takes place in a large quarry near Kitzbühel, with Mercedes-Benz providing off-road vehicles from the GLK, GL, M and
    G-Class.
  • Basic Training Austria: extreme slopes, driving at an angle on iced-up terrain and braking on ice-covered surfaces – this one-day training event at the quarry in Kitzbühel demands maximum performance from both driver and vehicle.
  • Advanced Experience Austria: a true off-road adventure at the quarry in Kitzbühel by day, and an excellent dinner at a-five star hotel by night. And on the next day it is off to the ski slopes with a personal guide, or a skin-treatment session at the hotel spa – this two-day event combines driving training with winter sports or wellness activities.
  • Finland Arctic Circle: six days packed full of highlights, driving pleasure and unforgettable off-road winter experiences await participants in the polar region. From the word go a winter driving training session takes place at the Arctic Driving Center, at which the instructors teach the finer points of driving in ice-covered terrain. Thereafter the vehicles head out onto snow-covered side roads through the winter landscape of Finland. The programme of events also includes snowmobile excursions as well as a dog-sled ride.

For professional drivers: mastering snow and ice

  • Professionals Advanced Training Austria: on the ice track in Saalfelden, professional drivers are presented with the ideal conditions for practicing the way to handle winter hazards. Emergency braking on road surfaces with patches of differing slipperiness, evasive manoeuvres to avoid hitting sudden obstacles, and regaining control of skidding vehicles on snow and ice are some of the training exercises in which participants simulate as realistically as possible the stress situations occurring in their everyday working lives. In addition, they can expect to be coached by police psychologists and special trainers using interesting occupation-specific theoretical content and exercises.
  • Professionals Perfection Training Sweden: at speeds of up to 140 km/h, professional drivers complete training modules on extensive tracks which have been specifically designed to meet their requirements. The modules also comprise exercises in the dark, for example. Trainers who normally work with police task force units or in the world of motorsport are on hand to impart their know-how in individual coaching sessions and also to pass on their latest knowledge in theory workshops. This training event lasts four days.
