Volkswagen opens window to the future at the IAA

World premieres of no less than six New Small Family concepts

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011 – The world premiere of the up! at the 64th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt is not just the debut of one model. Rather, the world premiere of the two-door up! signifies the beginning of an entire series of cars: the New Small Family. At the IAA, Volkswagen is demonstrating how this family could develop in upcoming years – with no less than 6 exciting concept cars. Zero-emissions city specialist with E-drive: the e-up!. Clean driving with natural gas: the eco up!. Specialised for the world’s beaches: the buggy up! and up! azzurra sailing team. Conceptualised for urban driving: the cross up!. Tuned for the German autobahn: the GT up!. Volkswagen is presenting a wide range of other new products as well. Lifestyle models appearing in the spotlight are cars like the Beetle R Concept and the completely upgraded Beetle Fender. Offering a look at the world of tomorrow is the NILS electric vehicle. At the Volkswagen IAA area in Hall 3.0, you will see how cars of all classes are merging into a fascinating range of contemporary and future mobility.

NILS. The NILS electric vehicle reflects a new form of minimal mobility. “The single-seater was developed for commuters, because – in Germany, for example – 90 percent of car commuters are alone in their car,” says Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold, Director of Volkswagen Group Research. This study with its progressive aluminium space-frame body, wing doors and free-standing wheels shows a high level of dynamic performance, yet it glides into the future with zero emissions.

e-up!. “It has been decided: a production version of the e-up! will launch on the market in 2013,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen Brand with responsibility for Development. A near-production study of this zero-emissions car debuts at the 2011 IAA. A signature trait at its front end: the arc-shaped layout of its LED daytime running lights in the bumper. Just as eye-catching: the upper engine air intake – a slot between the headlights and the VW logo – which is fully covered by a chrome strip on the e-up!. Because a minimal volume of cooling air suffices for the entire drive system.

eco up!. At the 2011 IAA, Volkswagen is presenting an up! that sets a new benchmark in CO2 emissions of just 79 g/km thanks to its natural gas drive (EcoFuel) and BlueMotion Technology (Stop/Start system and battery regeneration): the eco up!. No one envisioned a small car with a CNG natural gas drive of this type, even though this fuel offers tremendous advantages: natural gas engines are clean and enjoy tax benefits in places like Germany. When used in the smallest vehicle class, natural gas drives, besides posting record low emissions, are significantly more economical than hybrid systems, which are too expensive for the small car segment.

buggy up!. A buggy is more than a car, it is an automotive lifestyle feeling. Born in California in the 1960s. Based on the Beetle, which provided the engine and chassis. The rest was invented by buggy pioneers like American Bruce Meyers. Out of GRP, or glass-reinforced plastic. Buggies have had a cult following right up to today. That is reason enough for Volkswagen to now show a 21st century buggy concept based on the new up!. Not of GRP, but instead of strong, high-tech, lightweight construction steels. Yet, in developing the two-seater concept, the study still follows the original approach of the historic models from California.

up! azzurra sailing team. The up! azzurra sailing team was designed by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and Walter de Silva. Giugiaro and de Silva both grew up in nautical environments. And it was in this environment that the up! azzurra sailing team was created – a prototype of an open, small, eco-friendly automobile for the world’s marinas. Giorgetto Giugiaro, born in Garessio – a town where the sea breezes blow strong from the nearby Ligurian coast – and Walter de Silva – born in Lecco on Lake Como – have extended the potential range of the New Small Family to include a nautical version. The prototype’s name comes from a yacht club on the Costa Smeralda.

cross up!. The cross up! is still a concept car, but it shows 3 aspects very clearly. 1. How the four-door up! will look. 2. What the four-door up! might look like in a cross up! version. 3. That Volkswagen will be extending its successful cross programme over increasing numbers of models. The new cross up! too shows rugged exterior qualities. They include wheel well and side sill extensions and designed in dark anthracite and black side protection strips above the sills; worked into these strips is the “cross up!” signature. Also redesigned are the rugged bumpers with underbody protection, front and rear.

GT up!. The new up! will be offered with engine powers ranging up to 55 kW / 75 PS. That makes sense, because the up! is primarily driven in the urban world. However, the car design could handle much more power. Showing how a more powerful up! might look is the highly dynamic GT up!. 100 PS in power would be conceivable here. Fitted with such an engine, the barely 900 kg GT up! would signify affordable driving fun more than practically any other vehicle. GT stands for Gran Turismo. When an I is added for injection, its identifier refers to the Volkswagen icon. And performing on the same playing field is the GT up!.

New Small Family – World Premieres

up!date to the New Small Family:
World premieres of 6 concept cars – all related to the up!

buggy up! and up! azzurra: specially designed for the world’s beaches
cross up!, GT up!, eco up! and e-up! show potential of the new car series

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011 – The world premiere of the new up! at the 64th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt does not just involve the debut of one model. Rather, the world premiere of the two-door up! signifies the beginning of an entire series of cars: the New Small Family. At the IAA, Volkswagen is demonstrating – with no less than 6 exciting concept cars – how this family could be further developed based on the new up!. Specially designed for the world’s beaches are the buggy up! and the up! azzurra sailing team. Then there is the cross up!, which was conceptualised for urban driving. The GT up! is a concept car tuned for the German Autobahn. Another concept car is the eco up! that is powered by natural gas and extremely clean to drive: The e-up! is a zero-emissions specialist with an electric drive. And it all starts now!

buggy up! – the up! for endless summer

Freedom. A buggy is more than just a car; it is an automotive lifestyle feeling. It was born in California in the 1960s and was based on the Beetle, which provided the engine and the chassis. The rest was created by buggy pioneers such as American Bruce Meyers: out of GRP, or glass-reinforced plastics. Buggies have had a cult following that continues to today. That is reason enough for Volkswagen to now present a 21st century buggy concept based on the new up!: the buggy up!. This buggy is not made of GRP, but instead of strong, high-tech, lightweight construction steels. Yet, the conceptual approach for developing the two-seater, as original as it is, still follows the lead of historic models from California.

Openness. The (reinforced) underbody, running gear and drive technology of the up! were kept, while the roof-less exterior skin of the body was completely redesigned, and the ride height was lowered by 20 mm. Nonetheless, the design of the buggy up! with its headlights, the position of the VW badge – and signature trait of the front bumper that appears to smile – all tie the car to the two-door up!. Yet, everything is different: the bonnet is built much flatter, the bumpers show an independent character, the roof is not just clipped off, rather it takes its idea from small convertible sports cars. The rear section was also completely redesigned. This is logical, because the buggy up! does not have a boot like the “normal” up!, nor does it have any C-pillars. However, it is immediately recognisable as an up! by its rear lights, which are like a reflection of the headlights. Practical: the bootlid is constructed of two pieces; the main part of the lid lifts upward like a classic bootlid, but the section above the bumper folds down, like the tailgate on a pick-up. And this makes it extremely easy to stow even heavy and bulky items. On top of the lid, there are also tie-down straps for a set of luggage.

Safe. The designers also made this up! a purebred buggy in its side profile. Of course, it has no doors, but in their place it has extensive body reinforcements and a sturdy roll bar behind the two seats. Especially cool: the open side sills. This makes the experience of open-air driving even more exciting than in a conventional convertible.

Snappy. At 3,584 mm, the buggy up! is somewhat longer than the production up! with a hard top (+44 mm), and its width of 1,672 mm is somewhat wider (+31 mm). As might be expected, the height of the buggy up! comes in significantly lower at 1,288 mm (-190 mm). The minimalistic overhangs, front and rear, show sharp styling. Filling the wheel housings are 18-inch alloy wheels – enormous for a vehicle of this size – which have 205/40 tyres.

Colourful. The area above the bumper and the open side sills are in the colour “hot orange”, which was specially created for this vehicle; those who think back to the buggies of the 1960s when they hear this colour name are right on track. The bumpers and side sills are designed in a matt and rugged “metallic grey” colour. The same colour schemes dominate in the interior.

Waterproof. As is proper for a beach vehicle, the new interior styling is completely waterproof. Drains in the vehicle floor and the open side sills prevent flooding. Even the neoprene coated shell seats have water drains, so that no water accumulates in the vehicle after a swim in the ocean. If it should rain for a longer period of time, it is possible to stretch a sail between the window frames and the roll bar.

Sound. The controls for the infotainment system also sport a waterproof design. Among its features, the system has an iPod/iPhone dock. The entire module can be removed – including the integrated active loudspeakers – so that it can be used as a sound system for parties on the beach.

Go-kart. Compared to the two-door up! the buggy up! has a lower seat position – in keeping with the lower vehicle height. The specially designed seats were lowered by 58 mm compared to the production model. To ensure that everything makes ergonomic sense for the driver, engineers reduced the basic angle of the height-adjustable steering wheel by 4 degrees to an angle of 21 degrees. The result is a go-kart feeling. A sturdy handle is installed on the dash panel for the front passenger – just as it once was in the Beetle – because one never knows what lies over the next dune. In essence, the buggy up! is pure emotion, but it is easy to drive and very safe. A car that would not only be good to drive in California. One thing should be made up!solutely clear at this point: the New Small Family is just beginning to grow …
up! azzurra sailing team – the up! with a Mediterranean soul

The up! azzurra sailing team was created by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and Walter de Silva. Giugiaro and de Silva both grew up in nautical environments. And it was in this environment that the up! azzurra sailing team was created – a prototype of an open, small, eco-friendly automobile for the world’s marinas. Giorgetto Giugiaro, born in Garessio – a town near the Ligurian coast where the sea breezes blow strong – and Walter de Silva – born in Lecco on Lake Como – have extended the potential range of the New Small Family here to include a nautical version. The prototype’s name comes from a yacht club on the Costa Smeralda.

The up! azzurra sailing team retains the original character of the up! with its precise and appealing lines. Yet the concept vehicle is completely open – there are no doors or roof. This lets the driver and passengers enjoy the summer breezes, as if they were aboard a boat.

High-tech and highly stylish materials are used inside the vehicle, all of which are completely waterproof, and they intentionally resemble the fittings of a luxury yacht. These features include the four seats in white-blue leather, numerous chrome components and a dashboard in mahogany with maple wood inlays. Its surfaces are coated in a synthetic resin.

The up! azzurra sailing team is more than just a prototype – it forges a link between the heritages of Italian yachts and German automobiles. And that is how an up! was created with a Mediterranean soul!
cross up! – the up! for big city driving

Near production. The up! family continues with the cross up!. It is also still a concept car, but it demonstrates three 3 aspects very clearly: 1. How the four-door up! will look. 2. What the four-door up! might look like in a cross up! version. 3. That Volkswagen will be expanding its successful cross programme over more models. Cross models that are currently available are the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran. Cross stands for customised and especially rugged Volkswagen designs with rugged lifestyle qualities.

up!date. Aside from its cross features, characteristics distinguishing this member of the New Small Family compared to the two-door car are of course the additional doors and the fully independent styling of the C-pillars. While the shoulder or ‘tornado’ line and windows ascend towards the rear near the C-pillars on the two-door car, on the four-door car the two elements form a straight line. This gives this body variant its independence, and it has a nearly van-like appearance. As on the two-door version, the C-pillars are also supported over the rear wheel housings; in conjunction with the extremely short rear overhang, this creates a very powerful, dynamic appearance.

Rugged qualities. Typical of a cross model from Volkswagen: the wheel well extensions and side sill extensions designed in a dark anthracite (with satin effect) as well as the black side protection strips above the sills; worked into these strips is the “cross up!” signature. The rugged bumpers are also a new design. Eye-catching at the front is the silver cross-bar in the bumper which has integrated fog lights and an air intake with a honeycomb grille that is distinctly larger, especially towards its bottom. Also designed in a silver colour is the underbody protection. The rear of the car also has a counterpart to this underbody protection and a silver cross-bar on the bumper. Another unmistakable trait of the cross version is its greater ground clearance: 15 mm higher.

Tornado red. The concept car makes its appearance with “Tornado Red” exterior paint and other silver elements. Such as with machine-polished 16-inch alloy wheels in cross design (“mythos” type) and 185 tyres; the red circle around the VW logo at the centre of the wheel matches the colour of the body. The roof rails of the cross up! concept car are painted in “matt silver”. Matching them in styling are the door mirror caps in “light silver”.

Living spaces. As soon as one of the doors or the bootlid of the cross up! is opened, the view is of the seats in their special cross trim (red centre panels, grey side panels). As in all up! models, the dash pad (designer panel in the cockpit in front of the driver and front passenger) and upper door trim panels are painted; in this case, it matches the exterior colour “Tornado Red”. Other accents such as the bezels of the air nozzles and the centre console are designed in black piano paint. A “small leather pack” with coloured decorative seams upgrades the steering wheel, gear shift grip and parking brake grip. Last but not least, door sill guards with the “cross” signature protect against tracks left by either rugged or party shoes.
GT up! – the up! for the fast roads

Agility. Volkswagen will offer the new up! with engines whose power only ranges up to 55 kW / 75 PS. That makes sense, because the up! is primarily driven in the urban world. However, the car design could handle much more power. And that too can be desirable. Showing how such a more powerful up! might appear is the highly dynamic GT up!. Conceivably, its engine could have a power of 100 PS. Such an engine would offer drivers of the barely 900 kg GT up! more affordable driving fun than hardly any other vehicle. This would be very much in the style of the ancestor of the sporty small car – the first generation GTI. When an I is added for injection, its identifier refers to the Volkswagen icon. And the GT up! is performing on the same playing field.

Dominating. The concept car is painted in the sporty colour “oryx white pearl effect”. Designers completely redesigned the front bumper. It deviates completely from the typical up! design: instead of the centrally integrated and painted cross-wise component, which is in metal colour on the cross up!, the GT up! features a large, central cooling air intake with a grille in honeycomb look – similar to the one used on the Golf GTI, for example. Outside there are two cooling air intakes for the brakes; integrated in these openings are the wing-shaped LED daytime running lights. Prominent on its sides are the painted side sills, black door mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels with 195 tyres. A roof edge spoiler generates tremendous downforce at the rear axle, and powerful sound is generated by a double flow exhaust system with two visible chrome tailpipes, one on the left and one on the right.

Ergonomics. Inside, the GT up! also projects a dynamic image with its anthracite coloured interior. Offering a contrast to the anthracite are the centre seat panels with their blue checked pattern and the “paint blue” rings around the air vent nozzles. Painted in a sophisticated glossy black are the dashboard and upper door trim panels. The black roofliner is coordinated with them.
eco up! – the up! for clean natural gas

EcoFuel. At the 2011 IAA, Volkswagen is presenting an up! which – thanks to its natural gas engine (EcoFuel) and BlueMotion Technology (Stop/Start system and battery regeneration) – emits just 79 g/km CO2, a new best value in CO2 emissions: the eco up!. So far, no one has documented such low emissions in a small car with CNG natural gas drive. Moreover, this fuel offers tremendous advantages: natural gas engines are very clean and receive favourable taxation benefits in such countries as Germany. When used in the smallest vehicle class, natural gas drives – besides achieving these best values in emissions – are significantly more economical than hybrid systems that are unrealistically expensive in the small car segment. So, even though the natural gas version of the eco up! with BlueMotion Technology is still a concept car at this IAA, by the time of next year’s IAA it will have long been on the road as a production vehicle.

EcoFuel facts: Volkswagen is also using a newly developed 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine for the eco up!. It outputs 50 kW / 68 PS. As an EcoFuel version without BlueMotion Technology, the car will already launch on the market next year. Its combined fuel consumption: 3.2 kg/100 km natural gas (CNG = Compressed Natural Gas). This value is equivalent to a CO2 value of 86 g/km, which is already extremely low. As a BlueMotion Technology version in the style of the eco up!, fuel consumption drops to 2.5 kg/100 km and CO2 emissions are reduced to the mentioned 79 g/km. As noteworthy as the environmental aspect: fuel costs per 100 km are well under 2.50 euros (price in Germany in August 2011)! It is hardly possible to drive more economically than this.

Natural gas tanks in the underbody. These incredible values are made possible by the high energy content of the natural gas; one kg of CNG has the same energy content as about 1.5 litres of petrol. The natural gas is stored in 2 underfloor tanks (combined fuel capacity: 72 litres or 11 kg CNG) located near the rear axle. Tank 1 is located in front of the axle together with a 10-litre reserve petrol tank; tank 2 makes use of the spare wheel recess. Since the entire EcoFuel system was integrated in the vehicle structure, it does not impose any limitations on the car, except for the use of the spare wheel recess.

Colourful. The eco up! with 16-inch alloy wheels is painted in the light colour “oryx white pearl effect”. A visual link to the theme of natural gas: the turn indicator covers of the rear lights are tinted blue. Inside, the basic colour of the concept car is anthracite. This also applies to the centre seat panels in “lorno” fabric. Forming a colourful contrast to the anthracite is the yellow “neon” colour of the outer borders of the seats. It fits in well with the “limette” paint colour of the air vents. In turn, the air vents are colour coordinated with the dash pad in front of the driver and front passenger, centre console and door trim panels whose paint matches the exterior colour “oryx white pearl effect”.
e-up! – the up! for zero emissions driving

Enlightening. It has been decided: a production version of the e-up! will be launched on the market in 2013. At the IAA in 2011, Volkswagen is already presenting a near-production study of this zero-emissions car. It has a distinctive identifying characteristic at its front end: the arc-shaped layout of the LED daytime running lights in the bumper. Of technical interest: on the e-up!, the upper engine cooling air slot – a slot between the headlights and the VW logo – is fully covered by an elegant chrome trim strip. That is because narrow air intake slots above and below the licence plate suffice to cool the drive system of the e-up! that is painted in the colour “planet blue metallic”.

Friendly. The interior of the e-up! is dominated by friendly beige colours; the designer panel in front of the driver and front passenger, centre console and door trim panels are painted in the new colour mix known as “two drops blue”; accents around the air vents glisten in a sophisticated black.

Silent. Supplying the propulsive power for the concept car, which can reach a top speed of 135 km/h, is an electric motor with a peak power of 60 kW (continuous power: 40 kW). As is typical of electric motors, the nearly silent motor develops a high maximum torque of 210 Newton metres from a standstill. The driver activates the forward or reversing gear by pushbutton on the centre console.

Energetic: The car’s battery capacity of 18 kilowatt-hours (kWh) enables distances of up to 130 km, depending on driving style – enough driving range for the city and for the trips of most commuters. The batteries themselves are located in the underbody of the e-up!. Meanwhile, all key drive and ancillary components are housed in front in the engine compartment.

IAA 2011 – NILS

Electric vehicle for commuters:
NILS travels like an arrow into the urban future

Lightweight 460 kg single-seater with electric drive was specially designed for commuters
NILS research project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Volkswagen AG is presenting a car for the urban world of tomorrow at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA): NILS. The single-seat electric vehicle reflects a new, fascinating form of minimalist mobility. The concept car – with its progressive aluminium space frame, wing doors and free-standing wheels – exhibits a high level of dynamic performance, yet travels with zero emissions and silently towards the future. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.

Technically realistic and economically feasible. “NILS is a vehicle that anticipates the future. It looks as though someone has projected it back from the year 2030 to the world of today. This study melds sustainability, design and lifestyle in a new way. A high-tech vehicle from the Volkswagen company with an electric drive, but very realistically conceptualised,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Board of Management and Head of Development for the Volkswagen Brand. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold, Director of Volkswagen Group Research explains the project from the research perspective: “In the context of the growing influence of electric mobility, cutting edge vehicle concepts like these – which are based on intensive analyses of future and vehicle research and on strong networking ties to Marketing – will play an increasingly important role. That is because new, very target group specific requirements will be placed on cars with the advent of electric mobility. These new vehicle concepts – together with the electrification of existing models – will help to advance electric mobility to a breakthrough.” In this context, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg explains further: “The goal of the NILS project is to work out a technically concrete and economically feasible vehicle concept for micro-mobility, which restructures individual transportation to make it more efficient and environmentally compatible based on electric drive technology.” Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold adds: “Therefore, Group Research intensively analysed all facets of commuter transportation with the goal of making it sustainable for the future. The results of these analyses were made available to individual vehicle development departments. And so, all of the company’s brands – from A for Audi to V for Volkswagen – are benefiting from the think tank of Group Research.”

Networked know-how. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg comments: “The close cooperation with Group Research has meant that we at Volkswagen are really able to put cutting-edge vehicle projects in motion. We benefit from the networked know-how of the company here. This also includes the Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam. There, under the leadership of Thomas Ingenlath, an entirely new interpretation of Volkswagen design was accomplished in NILS. Those viewing this concept car can look far into the future of our brand and of the automobile itself. NILS is anything but a dry-run exercise; it is very realistic. Despite its compact dimensions, the concept fulfils all safety requirements for contemporary vehicles, for example. Commuters would not only drive in an eco-friendly way, but would also be very safe in this car.”

With a range of 65 kilometres, the 130 km/h NILS would certainly be the ideal vehicle for the majority of commuters in Germany. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, 73.9 per cent of all commuters residing between Berlin and Munich cover less than 25 kilometres on their way to work. So, NILS is designed to be a reflection of a new era.

NILS defines new segment

Electric traction changes mobility. Automobiles have always been mirrors of the times with their design styles and technological standards reflecting the status quo of a particular era. Consider Volkswagen: at the turn of the century, the age of downsizing gained momentum in the powertrain area. At the same time, a new quality of styling took hold, which today is still marked by maximum clarity and precision. Currently, we are experiencing yet another developmental thrust: the long-term breakthrough of electric traction. Many Group models in the higher vehicle classes are already available with hybrid drives, where the electric motor supports the conventional drive system. This emissions-reducing drive technology is now breaking into high-volume segments.

Golf with E-drive debuts in 2013. The first high-volume models with a pure electric drive will soon reach production readiness; the Golf, the best-selling car in the world, will debut with an electric drive (Blue-e-Motion) in 2013. In addition, electric traction will lead to entirely new concepts; they will result in vehicles that fulfil specific needs profiles more than ever. One of these needs profiles is that of commuters who commute to their jobs in their millions every day in the world’s urban areas. For a long time now, public transportation has not always been the first choice of commuters for various reasons. In Germany, for example, about 60 per cent of all commuters travel by car according to the Federal Statistical Office; of these, over 90 per cent travel alone. Zero emissions vehicles like NILS will offer these frequent drivers a new eco-friendly mobility solution.

NILS leaves a small footprint in traffic

Narrower, lower, shorter, different. The concept is a very compact car that requires extremely little space in traffic. NILS is only 3.04 metres long, making it about 50 cm shorter than the new Volkswagen up! model. The width of the NILS, from wheel to wheel, is 1.39 metres; the body itself measures only 0.86 metres wide. The concept car is 1.2 metres tall. By means of comparison: a Porsche 911 is taller at 1.31 metres.

Design was created in Potsdam. More important than its dimensions is the layout of its body. NILS shares the same basic body layout as a Formula-1 race car: driver in the middle, engine in back, aluminium wheels outboard and free-standing. The 17-inch alloy wheels are equipped with 115/80 (front) and 125/80 (rear) tyres optimised for low rolling resistance. The clean, distinctive styling of the NILS car has its origins at the Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam. Designer Thomas Ingenlath, the centre’s director, comments on the research vehicle: “NILS was designed to make a visual statement and transport a vision of the automotive future to the present. The car had to visually highlight the theme of sustainability, while showing a future-oriented look and simply being fun. I think that we have successfully integrated both of these aspects. Although our mission here was to come up with an entirely new body concept for the brand, NILS matches the Volkswagen design DNA 1:1.” Consider the bumpers: it is no coincidence that they remind one of the bumpers on the new up! with their black borders around the impact surfaces. Thomas Ingenlath continues: “I am especially pleased that we managed to implement the concept of the 2 glass wing doors. This allowed us to create large transparent surfaces and simultaneously make entering and exiting the vehicle very comfortable, even in the most cramped of parking spaces.”

NILS is tailored to commuting distances

65 km and 130 km/h. Although, or even because, NILS is so compact and lightweight (460 kg), it is a lot of fun to drive. It is an agile car with a top speed of 130 km/h, and it can accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. This is accomplished by an electric motor with a reasonably small 15 kW nominal power and short-term peak power of 25 kW. A lithium-ion battery supplies the electric motor with energy. The battery capacity (5.3 kWh) enables driving ranges of up to 65 km, depending on the style of driving. A battery of this size is relatively inexpensive, and its capacity is sufficient for this type of car. The research vehicle can be charged either via a conventional 230 Volt electrical outlet (maximum charging time 2 hours) or at an electric vehicle charging station. The plug port is located at the back underneath the rear lighting module.

Electric motor is a lightweight 19 kg. In setting up the electric drive system, engineers made use of the great wealth of experience Volkswagen has acquired in developing other concept cars such as the L1 and XL1 as well as future production vehicles like the Golf Blue-e-Motion or up! Blue-e-Motion. The centrepiece of the drive unit is the lightweight 19 kg electric motor together with its transmission and battery. Energy management is via a high-voltage pulse inverter, which – together with the 12 Volt DC/DC converter for the vehicle electrical system and the charger – forms an integral drive unit. It is the rear axle that is driven. All drive unit components are located compactly in an aluminium housing. The unit, including the drive shafts, is integrated at the rear of NILS.

Space for shopping. The motor, battery and all other components are so compact in their construction that there is still space for a small but practical bootspace above the drive unit. As on the Golf, for example, the bootlid is unlocked via the VW logo; in this case, the body-coloured area above the rear lighting module swings upwards. The space is laid out so that users can conveniently stow items from a classic shopping trip – a case of drinks and a bag, for example.

NILS is sporty and agile

Optimal weight distribution. With a vehicle like NILS, the customer target group would not only commute to work with zero emissions, but as described would also have a lot of fun doing it. That is because the lightweight NILS drives like a sports car with its pure mechanical steering and centrally positioned shell seat; from a standstill, the electric motor produces a maximum torque of 130 Nm, which is transferred to the rear axle via a one-speed transmission. For wheel control and suspension, there are double-wishbone suspensions front and rear; the ESP electronic stabilisation programme ensures that with all of its agile performance, NILS will still stay on course. The car’s very good weight distribution between the front and rear axles contributes towards the ESP having to do as little as possible.

NILS brakes and accelerates automatically upon request

Innovative City Emergency Braking. Another important electronic assistant in NILS is City Emergency Braking. The continually active system uses a laser sensor (in the front VW logo) to detect the risk of an imminent collision, and at that moment it automatically brakes the car. Depending on the car’s speed and the driving situation, City Emergency Braking can reduce the speed at impact and might even prevent an accident.

Automatic Distance Control. City Emergency Braking is a software extension of the automatic distance control system (ACC). Its full range of functionality is available in NILS. The ACC system also uses a laser sensor to measure the distance and relative speed to the vehicle ahead in traffic – parameters to which NILS automatically adjusts its speed. Beforehand, the driver preselects the desired following distance and vehicle speed, similar to a cruise control system. The automatic distance control system has intuitive controls with 3 new multifunction keys in the steering wheel. Two arrow keys are used to vary the vehicle speed (in open driving) and the distance to the vehicle in front. Another key between the 2 arrow keys is used to activate or deactivate the ACC system. The system itself can be used over the entire speed range of NILS; in addition, the system can even automatically brake the car to a stop, depending on the situation. Not only are the four disc brakes used to brake; electric traction by electric motor and battery regeneration can be used to brake as well, depending on the driving situation. Last but not least, Front Assist is integrated in the ACC system. This continually active system warns the driver of a potential collision; at speeds below 30 km/h, automatic braking can avoid a collision under some circumstances.

Digital instruments

TFT display as instrument cluster. The instrument cluster was tailored to the electric vehicle. The main feature here is a 7-inch TFT display. The vehicle’s speed is shown digitally in the middle. Energy flow is visually represented by bar elements. Another graphic display offers information on the driving range.

Clever touchscreen. The second central instrument is a mobile multifunctional system like the one used in a similar form in the new up!: the Portable Infotainment Device (PID). It is snapped onto the A-pillar to the right of the instrument cluster. Via touchscreen, the driver controls functions related to “Navigation”, “Radio”, “Media”, “Telephone”, “Trip computer” and – to preconfigure the driving range – “Eco”. At the start of the drive, the PID computes the expected driving range, then it not only displays the route on the map display, but also the radius and thereby the destinations that can be reached using the current battery charge.

Simple where it makes sense. To save on weight and costs, certain functional elements and controls are operated without electrical assistance. The side mirrors, for example, are adjusted manually, which is not really an inconvenience in an interior that is only 0.61 metre wide. There is no power assistance for steering either; however, this is no problem on a vehicle weighing less than 500 kg. Meanwhile, the heating and ventilation system has fully electronic control. The driver sets the temperature and blower setting via 2 controls in the form of electronic sliders; 2 additional sliders are used for the ventilation flap position (air flow direction) and seat heating. Located to the right of the steering column is the motor start-stop switch; this round, handy switch is also used to select the position of the single-speed transmission (D, N or R).

NILS relies on aluminium space frame body

Safe like a big car. The aluminium space frame body was designed to be a highly effective safety cell. The body-in-white – i.e. the basic structure without add-on parts or glass – is produced from extruded aluminium parts, cast aluminium and sheet aluminium. The roof frame, together with the wing door mounts, a sturdy roll bar behind the driver, the bootspace and the front bulkhead consist of high-strength sheet aluminium. Also extremely sturdy are the extruded aluminium parts; they are used in the area of the side sills, the transverse profiles and the crash-optimised longitudinal profiles (front and rear car sections). The housings for the drive unit and other elements consist of cast aluminium parts. All add-on body parts are made of plastic and aluminium. The front and rear side body parts are manufactured in aluminium. Parts made of high-strength plastic include the bumpers and the trim panels on the side sills.

Wing doors from 3 parts. The 2 wing doors are a work of art in their manufacture. Their frames consist of 3 main elements: an inner section, a crash reinforcement section and an exterior part. When they are closed, they offer optimal crash safety. The door windows are made of lightweight, scratch-resistant, layered polycarbonate. The front window is made of laminated safety glass.

See and be seen. Xenon and LED elements are used for the headlights, rear lights and indicators. In front, 2 bi-xenon modules handle the job of the dipped and main beam headlights. The indicator lights and daytime running lights are implemented as white and yellow LEDs. The daytime running lights are mounted on the front wheel trim panels, and these lights also serve as position lights for parking. In the acrylic glass of the rear lights – which are integrated in the rear section like small wings – the light generated by LEDs is routed via transparent semiconductors. Their electrical power consumption? Minimal. Which is just what you need with an electric vehicle.

IAA 2011 – Beetle R Concept

The Beetle as sports car:
World debut of the design study Beetle R Concept

Beetle R Concept has customised front and rear sections and 20-inch wheels
Sport seat system of Beetle R Concept is upholstered in luxurious Nappa leather

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

At Volkswagen, the letter “R” as an added identifier promises top-notch performance. Currently, this claim is being validated with turbo pressure by the Golf R (199 kW / 270 PS) and Scirocco R (195 kW / 265 PS). In a world debut at the IAA, Volkswagen is now showing a third variation of this sporty theme: the Beetle R Concept. It is based on the 21st Century Beetle. Like the Golf R and Scirocco R, the R version of the Beetle was also created at Volkswagen subsidiary Volkswagen R GmbH located near to Wolfsburg. The Beetle R Concept is still a design study. Those who are familiar with the Beetle 2.0 TSI (147 kW / 200 PS) know the dynamic potential of this new car. As an “R”, the Beetle could demonstrate a performance potential similar to that of the Golf R and Scirocco R.

Exterior with 20-inch wheels

Visually, the Beetle R Concept, painted in “Serious Grey”, offers a glimpse of what a production version might look like. Outside, the concept is equipped with 20-inch “Talladega” alloy wheels – the same design used on the Golf R and Scirocco R. However, 18- and 19-inch wheels are mounted on those cars. Easy to spot on the Beetle’s wheels, which feature 5 triple spokes, are the blue brake callipers in R design.

Newly sculpted bumpers are wider

Designers completely redesigned the front and rear bumpers that were widened by 30 mm. In front, the bumper module practically consists of 3 air intakes, which are styled in contrasting “Black High Gloss”. The middle air intake supplies the engine with oxygen, while the outer two contribute to cooling the brakes. The front spoiler, also painted in “Black High Gloss”, is designed as a flat splitter (with a chrome strip); splitters of this kind are typically used in motorsport. To maintain temperature regulation of the engine within an optimal range, even under extreme conditions, ventilation slots are found on the right and left sides of the engine bonnet.

The rear bumper also has air slots – air exhaust vents – that are integrated in the aerodynamic concept of the Beetle R Concept. There is also a diffuser that is integrated in the lower bumper area. Together with the rear spoiler – which is significantly larger than the production models with up to 200 PS in power – and its black trailing edge, ideal downforce values are attained at the rear axle. A visual and acoustic highlight is the exhaust system with its 2 sets of dual chrome tailpipes.

On each side, the bumpers transition into the free-standing wings; they were also widened: 15 mm per side. The side sills are styled in “Black High Gloss”; a high-end chrome trim strip is incorporated here. Also painted in “Black High Gloss” are the roof, the upper part of the bootlid connecting to it, the door mirror housings and door handles.

Interior with Nappa leather sport seat system

As is usual on R models, the interior also makes a customised and sporty impression. In the front, the driver and passenger sit in motorsport shell seats with what are referred to as Ergopads made of gray nubuck leather. The seats are upholstered in black Nappa leather. Embossed on the seats is the R logo. The seat seams and piping are in the colour “Space Blue”.

The contrast colour “Black High Gloss” that was already used on the exterior is used in the interior as well, such as for dashboard accents and decorative elements around the gear shift grip. Interior designers also styled the instruments to be R-specific. The central instrument cluster (tachometer in the middle, in the style of a sports car) and the auxiliary instruments laid out above the centre console are both modified here. The door sill plates are upgraded with the R logo. Meanwhile, brushed aluminium is used for all pedal caps. Matching the seats with their blue piping are the fabric floor mats with their blue-black double borders.

IAA 2011 – Beetle Fender

Let the music play!
Legendary USA company Fender inspires Beetle designers and engineers

Beetle Fender pays tribute to a legendary brand of guitars from the USA
An electric guitar can be connected to subwoofer of the Fender sound system

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

The Beetle is the first car in Europe that can be ordered with a sound system by the guitar and amplifier producer Fender. Now, at the IAA, Volkswagen is presenting a concept car that can be interpreted as a tribute to the legendary US company: the exclusive Beetle Fender with a customised look and features such as a sound system interface for connecting the electric guitar.

19-inch wheels and leather coated roof

Outside, the Beetle Fender is painted in a high-gloss “Black”, while a fine red line frames the side windows; another line in this style is used on an electric guitar customised by Volkswagen Design – a Fender Telecaster.

Chrome and aluminium also influence the look of the Beetle Fender. Designed in chrome are the door mirror caps, door handles, the trim strip beneath the side windows, accents in the side sills, VW badge and the 2 tailpipes of the exhaust system arranged as they were earlier on the Beetle. Produced from machine-polished aluminium are the caps and rings of a 19-inch version of the “Circle” alloy wheels. The basic structure of the wheel is in red. Track width extensions on the rear axle shift each of the wheels 10 mm outwards. Compared to the production version, the Beetle Fender’s ride height was lowered approximately 30 mm; this lets the wheel-tyre combination fill out the wheel housings more fully. Two other small but fine details: a guitar pick decal on the bonnet and the original Fender signature (in chrome) located beneath the VW badge on the bootlid.

Interior with dash pad in electric guitar style

The interior is also exceptionally well appointed. Eye-catching is the dash pad implemented in “Sunburst” – the two-tone wood design pattern of many Fender guitars. This instrument bar extending across the dashboard in front of the driver and passenger also creates a visual link to the world of rock music.

A high-end audio system sends music into the passenger compartment over a Fender sound system with an auxiliary tube amplifier. It has a prominent visual presence at the top of the dashboard. A cool solution: thanks to a special socket in the bootspace, an electric guitar can be plugged in; its sound plays over the subwoofer that is also integrated in the boot.

The Fender system is controlled from the control panel of the RNS 510 radio-navigation system (which comes with a touchscreen and integrated 30-GB hard drive). Like the rotary knob of the RNS 510, the controls for the climate control system (temperature, air conditioning function, rear window defrost and seat heating) were redesigned. The light-coloured metallic controls now look like those that have been used for decades on guitar and bass amplifiers; in the Beetle Fender the controls are executed in the high-end precision that is typical of Volkswagen. A similarly designed metallic control is also used for mirror adjustment. Another feature uncompromisingly tailored to musicians: a pick holder to the right of the DSG gear shift lever. The holder comes with 3 picks on which the outline of the Beetle is imprinted. Moreover, the stretch band across the door storage bin features the Fender signature. Although the Beetle Fender is still a concept car, “Fender Sound” can be ordered in the Beetle.

Fender sound system with ambience lighting

Those who choose the sound system also get ambience lighting for the interior in 3 colours (red, white, blue). Along with indirect lighting in the door shoulder panels, there are also light rings around the loudspeaker boxes in the doors. The sound system itself has 2 sets of tweeters – one set in the mirror triangles in front and one set mounted in the rear trim panels; they are equipped with neodymium magnets and fabric domes. In the front doors, there are woofers with dual voice coils, while the woofers located in the rear side trim each have a single voice coil. In addition, a subwoofer with a dual voice coil is integrated in an enclosed bass box in the Beetle’s boot. The centrepiece of the sound system is a 10-channel amplifier with Class A/B power amplifiers and 400 Watts of output power.

In 2011, the Polo continues to be the bestselling car in its class in Germany. In the overall ranking of all new car registrations in Germany, it holds 3rd place after the Golf (1st) and the Passat (2nd). It should be noted that this is not just a Volkswagen list, rather it is a ranking covering all cars sold in Germany. Across Europe the Polo holds 3rd place in new car registrations. A genuine bestseller, which has long been on roads across the globe – in China as well as in Russia, Japan and Australia. Now Volkswagen is presenting the new Polo R-Line in a world debut, extending the R-line family of cars (Golf, Scirocco, Passat CC and Touareg). This is the first time that Volkswagen has designed such a version of the Polo. Yet, it is fully in keeping with the agile character of the current generation of the Polo model. The Polo R-Line can be ordered with nearly any engine variant. Market launch of the Polo with the new equipment pack will be at the end of this year.

Exterior offers new bumpers and roof edge spoiler

Outside, the extended standard equipment of the Polo R-Line includes 16-inch “Mallory” alloy wheels, a radiator grille painted in high-gloss black (with R-Line badge), a specially designed sporty R-line bumper (in the specific body colour; rear bumper has a distinctive diffuser), chrome tailpipes for the exhaust system, body-coloured roof edge spoiler, R-line side sills also in body colour, daytime running lights (integrated under a chrome band in the main headlights), fog lights (in the front spoiler) and LED licence plate illumination. Available upon request: a sports chassis, which lowers the car into the dampers by 15 mm.

IAA 2011 – Tiguan R-Line

Comeback of an R-Line bestseller:
New generation of the Tiguan R-Line will launch in 2012

Most successful German SUV with 19-inch wheels and front sport seats
Tiguan R-Line can be delivered with any engine

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Since its initial launch, the Tiguan has remained the uncontested market leader in Germany. The Tiguan – which was significantly improved both visually and technically this year – has for a long time been a globally successful model, because it unites the advantages of a compact SUV (high seat position, rugged overall concept, impressive styling, spacious interior) with the properties of modern passenger cars – including very safe driving properties and extremely efficient TDI and TSI engines. Now, this total package is once again available as an R-Line version, but in the latest generation Tiguan. The Tiguan R-Line celebrates its world debut at the IAA in Frankfurt. The sporty SUV will launch on the German market at the beginning of next year. The Tiguan R-Line is based on the “Sport & Style” version.

19-inch alloy wheels are standard

Outside, the Tiguan R-Line can be recognised by its 19-inch alloy wheels, bumper in R design, R-Line badge on the radiator grille, a rear diffuser with black ribs and an R design rear spoiler in body colour. In addition, the door add-on parts are painted in body colour and are trimmed with chrome accents. The wheel well flares are in sporty black.

Front sport seats are required equipment in the R-Line

Key interior features of the R-line include a sport seat system – like the one also found in the new Tiguan R-Line. The seat system is upholstered in the exclusive, sporty “Kyalami” style fabric as standard, but it may also be ordered in “Vienna” leather as an option. The sporty Volkswagen’s most prominent brand symbol is the R-Line logo worked into the head restraints; it is also found on the multifunction steering wheel with its aluminium decor. Last but not least, other interior features are the pedals in stainless steel, aluminium door sill plates in front with R-Line logo, and – for the first time in the Tiguan R-Line – a black roofliner.

IAA 2011 – Golf Cabriolet Exclusive

Open-top flagship:
Golf Cabriolet Exclusive debuts for summer 2012

Most luxurious convertible Golf with sport seat system in “Nappa Cool Leather”

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

This summer, the new Golf Cabriolet was launched onto the market. A four-seater with an electrically activated soft top, a boot with enough space for long trips and all of the practical and technical traits that have made the Golf the most successful car in the world. Now, at the IAA, Volkswagen is presenting the Golf Cabriolet Exclusive as the new top model of the convertible line-up. The Golf Cabriolet is the fifth Volkswagen (after the Golf Variant, Eos, Passat CC and Touareg) to be launched in the sophisticated Exclusive version (conceptualised by Volkswagen R GmbH). And it will happen at the beginning of 2012.

Two-tone sport leather seat system in “Nappa Cool Leather”

Distinguishing the Golf Cabriolet Exclusive are its 17-inch “Salamanca” alloy wheels; also available as an option are 18-inch “Charleston” alloy wheels. Inside, the Volkswagen is equipped with a sport leather seat system in innovative “Nappa Cool Leather”, which is designed in the colour combination “Pepper Beige / Titan Black”. “Cool Leather” is especially ideal for cabriolets, because it absorbs much less heat.

Designed in the same colour combination are the interior door trim panels and the centre armrest. Also trimmed in “Cool Leather” are the steering wheel, gear shift lever and parking brake grip (each upgraded with decorative seams in a contrasting colour). Other Exclusive features include customised door sill plates (“Volkswagen Exclusive”) and floor mats whose base colour (“Titan Black”) and border (“Pepper Beige”) are coordinated with the colours of the seat system.

IAA 2011 – Phaeton Exclusive Concept

Italian leather custom manufacturer will soon celebrate its centenary:
Phaeton study with full leather interior by Poltrona Frau

Interior is one of the most elegant ever implemented in the Phaeton
Seats in light leather, dashboard in dark leather, accents in piano paint

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

The company Poltrona Frau, which in 2012 will be exactly 100 years old, is one of the top sources for leather workmanship in the world. Poltrona Frau is actually a furniture manufacturer. However, the leathers of the Poltrona Frau brand are not just limited to exclusive furniture items; they can also be found in automobiles, aeroplanes and yachts. As a tribute to the 100 years of the Italian company, Volkswagen has now upgraded its flagship with leather from the Poltrona Frau company: the Phaeton Exclusive Concept.

Multicolour leather upholstery and Alcantara roofliner

The full leather interior (“Agata” type) implemented in the Phaeton by Poltrona Frau is one of the most luxurious that has ever been fitted in an automobile. Designed in a leather named “Silkway Beige” are the seats (front seats with electric 18-way adjustment), door inserts, package tray and centre armrest (front). Meanwhile, leather surfaces of the dashboard, centre console, upper door panels and frames, as well as the borders of the floor mats are all upholstered in the contrasting colour “Anthracite”. Coordinated with this is the Alcantara roofliner in “Alabaster White” / “Silkway Beige”; even the bootspace is decorated in this colour and material combination. All relevant add-on parts are also painted in “Alabaster White”.

Volkswagen R GmbH exclusively applies piano paint (“Black”) to the wood accents or the “extended wood pack” offered in the interior. Piano paint is also used for the first time on the climate control panel in the rear.

Show car in “Luna Blue” with 20-inch wheels

The Phaeton Exclusive Concept 3.0 V6 TDI being presented in Frankfurt is painted in the pearl-effect colour “Luna Blue”. The LED rear lights are smoked. The show car sits on 20-inch alloy wheels.

IAA 2011 – Polo R WRC

2013 racing start in the World Rally Championship:
Volkswagen Motorsport shows Polo R WRC at the IAA 2011

Engine of the Polo R WRC develops about 300 PS from 1.6 litres displacement
Base engine is Volkswagen TSI four cylinder from high volume production

Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

The abbreviation R at Volkswagen combines the properties of commanding handling performance and uncompromising powertrain agility with a maximum of safety. The R ennobles Volkswagen models as vehicles with superior dynamics, compelling performance data and sportiness, at a price that offers outstanding value for money. From 2013 on, Volkswagen will contest the World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC.

Thanks to the Technical Regulations that have been revised in 2011 the WRC offers optimum prerequisites for the fielding of the Polo. The new set of rules prescribes 1.6-litre turbo engines with direct injection, in line with the trend to downsize engines – a discipline in which Volkswagen has been a pioneer with small-volume, turbo charged, and thus highly efficient, powertrains. Combined with clever rules that also stand for cost efficiency, the World Rally Championship offers a very attractive stage for Volkswagen.

Four-cylinder turbo engine with direct injection and about 300 PS

The centrepiece of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC will be a 1.6-litre TSI engine with direct injection and turbo-charging that will achieve a power output of about 300 PS and a maximum torque of about 350 Newton metres. In accordance with the regulations the four-cylinder power-plant will have its air intake reduced by a 33-millimetre air restrictor at high engine speeds. The new engine regulations introduced in 2011 thus fit the Volkswagen philosophy of clever downsizing for high efficiency while delivering sporty performance to a T.

To transmit the engine’s power to the wheels a sequential gearbox is planned. In addition, the Polo R WRC will naturally be fitted with a safety cage, four-wheel drive and, last but not least, an aerodynamically optimised exterior. According to the regulations the minimum dry weight will be 1,200 kilograms. In the World Rally Championship the technical concept of a world rally car has to be based on the body shell of a production vehicle. Substantial driving assistance systems are prohibited. The aim is to put a reasonable cap on development costs.

Volkswagen Accessories – Beetle collection

New: Beetle Collection from Volkswagen Accessories
Clothing and accessories for the Beetle attitude

Dreieich / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Whether it is known as the Beetle, Käfer, Coccinelle, Vocho, Fusca or Maggiolino – The cult car from Volkswagen has a vast number of fans from all over the world. The New Beetle continues the era – with clear, self-confident and superior sportiness, as Volkswagen itself describes the Beetle’s successor. Volkswagen Accessories has designed its own collection to celebrate the new Beetle and to reflect the car’s unique attitude through clothing and accessories.

When children draw a car, even today they still draw the silhouette of the Volkswagen Beetle. Over the decades the world-famous design has become an iconic figure and has shaped an entire attitude towards life. Every product in the Beetle Lifestyle Collection draws on this cult status, without utilising retro designs. Instead, the motto of the Beetle collection is “A modern interpretation of the traditional”.

Examples include the ladies’ and men’s T-shirts, which have a modern cut and utilise the imagery from old Volkswagen Beetle advertising campaigns.

In addition, the numerous checked applications and sleeve patches on the T-shirts, shirts and blouses demonstrate just how contemporary and fashionable the Beetle Collection is.

The blue twill Beetle Trilby hat is one of the Beetle Collection’s fashion highlights. A contrast strip with checked applications and the checked inner lining create colourful touches. The Beetle silhouette flag label show where the wearer’s heart lies.

The ladies’ and men’s dark blue Beetle leather jacket is the perfect outerwear for trend-conscious and sporty people with its casual biker style and high-quality workmanship. The jacket is made of one hundred percent kid leather. The checked inner lining creates a colourful contrast to the dark blue jacket. The jacket also includes other fashionable and practical details: The sewn-on pockets and the epaulettes with snap fasteners. The Beetle Silhouette is engraved on the zipper pullers and on the metal tag on the arm.

Anyone who likes the checked pattern will love the Beetle Collection – in particular the fitted checked blouse for ladies and the casual checked shirt for men. Both articles come with Beetle applications as a badge on the arm and lettering on the button panel. An original detail: It is embroidered with of the Beetle’s international nicknames along with the country’s flag. “Coccinelle” for ladies and “Maggiolino” for men.

The collection also offers something special for the small Beetle fans: The blue children’s T-shirt sports the cheeky text “Trade sister for Beetle!”. That is how siblings big and small make a clear statement.

In addition to the large range of clothing, the Beetle Collection also includes lifestyle accessories such as skateboards, headphones, a USB hub / card reader and an espresso cup set. The new Beetle collection is available now from any Volkswagen Partner or in the e-shop at www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/shop.

Volkswagen Accessories – Beetle accessories

Volkswagen Accessories presents the product range for the new Volkswagen Beetle for the first time at the IAA 2011

Accessory highlights for the new Beetle

Dreieich / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Alongside the basic products such as luggage compartment liners, tail silencer trim and communication systems, Volkswagen Accessories also presents a broad range of other exciting accessory highlights for the new Beetle. The Beetle is an icon. It tells a story. A story in which the new Beetle is bolder, more dynamic and more masculine in comparison to the predecessor model. Volkswagen Accessories accompanies this development with innovative, trendy and fresh product ideas for the vehicle.

In this country it is known as the Beetle, however the “heartbreaker” among cars has its own unique nickname in many different countries: Maggiolino, Coccinelle, Käfer, Bug, Fusca or Vocho. Volkswagen Accessories has responded to the wish for the country-specific nicknames for as many different parts on and in the Beetle as possible: Selected accessories now sport the corresponding nicknames and are available individually or as a package.

The high-quality nickname textile floor mats are made of durable, thickly woven velour and clearly show where your heart lies from the moment you enter the vehicle. Because they bear the nickname of your choice, Beetle, Käfer, Bug, Fusca or Vocho, in silver lettering.

Their abrasion-proof rear coating and the anti-slip floor attachment provide optimal protection and comfort in the footwell.

Furthermore, the silver-coloured nickname sill protectors bearing the Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Bug, Fusca, Coccinelle, Maggiolino or Volkswagen lettering provide a sensible and functional detail while also protecting the paint on the front and rear door sills against scratches and damage.

The nickname key covers from Volkswagen Accessories can also cover the key to happiness in Beetle style. The look: a white cover with black lettering. The Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Bug, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or Volkswagen nicknames are available as lettering and make an individual statement.

However, Volkswagen Accessories takes the nickname products one step further: Those who want more than the Volkswagen logo on the rear of their Beetle can also add their chosen nickname to the vehicle using the chrome nickname letters. The vehicle then shines with the Beetle, Käfer, Bug, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino, Vocho or Volkswagen lettering in the original Beetle look beneath the logo on the rear hatch.

In addition, those who want to customise their Beetle with an even more striking eye-catcher can also add the nickname design film from Volkswagen Accessories.

Attached to the lower section of the Beetle’s side doors, the design films display the desired nickname lettering embedded in a sporty racing stripe. The following nicknames are available in black or white, depending on the vehicle’s colour: Beetle, Bug, Coccinelle, Fusca, Käfer, Maggiolino, Vocho or Volkswagen.

Checking how the films will look before applying them is no problem! Volkswagen Accessories as developed a configurator especially for the film designs, which enables the various designs to be “tried on” virtually before the final selection.

Beetle drivers can add another sporty highlight to their vehicles with the “Helix” 17 and 18 inch alloy wheels. The concave curvature double spokes converge in the centre, forming an arrow shape. The large spaces between the spokes emphasise the vehicle’s dynamic character. They provide a clear view of the brake system. Tested to the Volkswagen Group’s strict standards, the alloy wheel guarantees the highest quality and safety on the road.

The accessories will be available from every Volkswagen Partner and in the e-Shop at www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/shop on time for the launch of the new Beetle on the German market.

Volkswagen Accessories – up! Collection

World premiere at the IAA 2011:
Volkswagen Accessories presents the up! Lifestyle collection

Dreieich / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Things are looking up! – With the up! Lifestyle collection designed for the new “small” model from Volkswagen. Volkswagen Accessories presents the collection for the first time at the IAA 2011 in Frankfurt am Main. The collection’s characteristics: purist, trend-conscious with clear cuts, materials and applications. The up! collection continues this approach with the colour selections for the clothing and accessories using blue, orange, white and black.

The casual ladies’ hooded shirt provides a comfortable and sporty look when on the road with the up! and around town. The extra large hood is almost worn like a scarf integrated into a hoodie. The highlight: The white inner lining creates a contrast to the cyan blue outer colour and the rubber up! patch on the sleeve. The up! print running diagonally from the front to the rear is especially eye-catching.

Things are even looking up! despite wind and weather – with the softshell jacket with both ladies’ and men’s designs. It is both functional and comfortable while also making a fashion statement in cyan blue (men) and white (ladies) with reflective style elements.

The fit of the softshell jacket can be adjusted individually using the orange rubber drawstring in the hem and hood along with the hook and loop fastener on the cuff.

Street style combined with comfort – that is the men’s black T-shirt with a transparent print in the shape of an exclamation mark created using numerous up! lettering prints.

The up! collection offers three different bag variants for those wanting to transport equipment for sports, leisure, university, work or school in the up! lifestyle look: a sports and travel bag, a shoulder bag along with a backpack. All three variants are made of a durable material similar to a truck tarpaulin. They are available in white with black borders and black straps with a striking orange print of the up! lettering. A special highlight: the black straps match the safety belts in the up!.

Every day should start with a good breakfast – and for up! drivers with the matching up! breakfast range. Volkswagen Accessories – up! Accessories

World premiere at the IAA 2011: Volkswagen Accessories presents three versatile up! boxes – for city slickers, travel lovers and kids

Innovative boxes for the up! – What more could you want?

Dreieich / Frankfurt, 13 September 2011

Small but sophisticated – that is the new up! from Volkswagen. In keeping with this motto, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Accessories have worked together to create three different up! boxes for their new small car. Whether it’s the kid box, the travel box or the city box – the small boxes are highly versatile and contain equipment which is both entertaining and useful.

All three up! box variants have one thing in common: the innovative box itself. When the snap fasteners are opened the box folds apart, creating a versatile base. In addition, the box can be folded down to half of its height using the snap fasteners. Thus, it perfectly fills the up! luggage compartment. The boxes are made of a durable, washable, anti-slip plastic. Furthermore, all of the products contained in the three boxes are designed using the colour of the corresponding box.

The blue travel box contains a practical travel refuse bin, which perfectly fits the cup holder in the up!, along with a lunchbox for travel supplies. Whether a short trip or a long journey, this provides up! drivers with two useful accessory products which are ideally organised to fit the small space for big journeys. Also included in the travel box: the up! key cover.

As soon as you open the orange-coloured kid box you are met by the great big googly eyes of an imaginatively designed cuddly toy, which can also be used as a small case, with a headphone jack for a media player. The cuddly toy is made of soft plush and also provides little passengers with a headrest for their favourite pastime in the car – sleeping. A backrest bag stores everything which children need during the journey. Simply attach it to the front seat headrest and all the things that kids need are within their reach. This up! box also includes the practical plastic lunchbox for a snack while on the road.

The green city box contains useful accessories for urban life. With the folding cooler bag you can turn your box into a cooler, and the thermocup keeps warm drinks warm and cold drinks cold. Especially clever: a shopping bag can be hooked onto a conventional shopping cart at the supermarket, so that the groceries can be loaded at the checkout and then transferred directly from the cart to the car.

Another accessory highlight for the up! will also be the decorative films. With “This side up!” Volkswagen Accessories has developed a decorative film for the up! roof. In addition, a motorway design will also be available, running the entire length of the up! and giving it the appearance of a road with median strip.

Volkswagen Accessories will also provide sporty-minded up! drivers with an aerodynamic package for the up!, which will include a front spoiler, sills and a rear spoiler. Volkswagen Genuine alloy wheels which have been specially developed for the up! round out the sporty look.

Additional information about the comprehensive accessories range for the up! is available at www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de or from any Volkswagen Partner.
