Michael’s special Spa helmet: “A gold-plated helmet for 20 golden years”
Most of the team’s and Michael’s fans were probably surprised on Friday last week when the engines started for he first practice session in Spa and Michael went on track: there was no sign of Michael’s signature red helmet but a very bright gold helmet instead! As most of you know by now, Michael was celebrating his 20 years in Formula One at the weekend, and his long-time helmet manufacturer Schuberth decided to celebrate this tremendous achievement with a little surprise for Michael…
When you have won seven World Championships and celebrated the 20th anniversary of your first appearance at a racing track, not much can surprise you. But we can imagine Michael’s face when Schuberth presented him with this impressive gold-plated helmet!
“Through the helmet we wanted to express to Michael our tremendous respect for his life’s achievement” said Marcel Lejeune, CEO at Schuberth. “If there’s one racer in this world worthy of a gilded helmet, then it’s Michael Schumacher.”
Michael was obviously very moved by the gesture: “I’m tremendously flattered that Schuberth is dedicating this kind of helmet to me. Gold plating as homage to my racing debut 20 years ago in Spa and the golden years that followed – that’s a grand idea and an expression of our strong partnership that’s lasted for quite a while now”.
Schubert will only produce twenty gold-plated 1:1 replica helmets with a certificate of authenticity signed by Michael – one for each of his years in the sport. There will also be additional replicas with gold paint. The replicas can be ordered online at www.shop.Schuberth.com.
