Debut at the Nürburgring: Alessandro Zanardi’s BMW M3 DTM at the track.

With the support of BMW Alessandro Zanardi (IT) its unique sporting career will add another chapter: On Thursday, the 8th November, the Italians completed on the Nürburgring (DE) a ride in a BMW M3 DTM. The winner of two Paralympic gold medals and a silver medal at the Games in London (GB) was on Wednesday in Munich (DE) as a guest. He went with the BMW Motorsport engineers through all points that need to be resolved before such exit – both on the technical side as well as in the context of security. As a result of these discussions and attempts at the car the decision was to take the DTM premiere jointly. In an accident, 2001, Zanardi lost both legs. He will thus be the first amputee driver who is in a DTM car on the track.
“We are very, Alessandro Zanardi to make this journey in the BMW M3 DTM,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “He has for many years a member of the BMW Motorsport family. And that’s why we want to give him this opportunity absolutely, even to drive the BMW M3 DTM. It naturally some replacements are necessary, we will make to the car. A DTM car is significantly more complex than that of the BMW 320si WTCC, with Alex in the World Touring Car Championship was celebrated four wins for us. Our engineers have taken up this challenge, however, gladly. Alex in London once wrote more sports history. In Hockenheim he was there live, as we were able to win all sensational DTM title in 2012 – and has the fans excited. He’s just a great person. ”
Zanardi is looking forward to the new adventure with BMW. “Even now I would like to thank Jens Marquardt and all my friends at BMW Motorsport and thank you for this unique opportunity. It feels like every time I come back to my family when I’m at BMW Motorsport. When I saw the BMW M3 DTM at Hockenheim for the first time up close, I was after all these months as hand cyclists are strongly racers. Such a fantastic car to drive may be, for each pilot is a great honor. I will enjoy every lap. ”
