Όπως ανακοίνωσε με δελτίο τύπου σήμερα η Williams F1 Team, από το 2014 θα τρέχει με κινητήρες της Mercedes-Benz. Η μακροπρόθεσμη εταιρική σχέση των δύο εταιριών αναφέρει πως η Mercedes-Benz θα παρέχει στη Williams τους turbo κινητήρες της αλλά και το ERS, με την Williams να εξοπλίζει τα μονοθέσια της το δικό της κιβώτιο ταχυτήτων.
Σύμφωνα με τους κανονισμούς του 2014, οι ομάδες θα πρέπει να τερματίζουν τον αγώνα απόστασης 300+ χλμ με φορτίου καυσίμου το οποίο θα ανέρχεται σε μόλις 100 κιλά. Γι’αυτό οι ομάδες πλέον θα εξοπλίζουν τα μονοθέσια τους με νέους 1.600αριδες turbo V6 κινητήρες οι οποίοι θα συνεργάζονται με το σύστημα ERS (Energy Recovery System) το οποίο θα αυξάνει την ιπποδύναμη κατά 30%.
Το σύστημα ERS θα παράγει 10 φορές περισσότερη ενέργεια σε σχέση με τα τωρινά συστήματα KERS, αφού θα ανακτούν ενέργεια από το turbo και τον πίσω άξονα, και θα την αποδίδουν πίσω και στα δύο.
Οι turbo κινητήρες θα παράγουν πολύ μεγαλύτερη ροπή από τους V8, λόγω χρήσης turbo, ειδικά στην έξοδο των στροφών. Θα παράγουν κοντά στα 750 άλογα, όπως οι τωρινοί V8, με τη διαφορά ότι το σύστημα ERS (Energy Recovery Systems) θα παράγει περισσότερη δύναμη. Σήμερα το σύστημα KERS παράγει επιπλέον 80 άλογα για 6,7 δευτερόλεπτα σε κάθε γύρο, αλλά το σύστημα ERS θα παράγει 161 άλογα για 33,3 δευτερόλεπτα ανά γύρο.

The Williams F1 Team and Mercedes-Benz announce long-term engine partnership
30th May, 2013. Grove, UK. The Williams F1 Team (Ticker: WGF1) and Mercedes-Benz are pleased to announce the signature of a long-term engine partnership from the 2014 Formula One World Championship season onwards.
Under the terms of the agreement, Williams will be supplied with a Mercedes-Benz Power Unit (Internal Combustion Engine plus Energy Recovery System) by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) based in Brixworth, UK. Williams will continue to manufacture its own transmission.
The 2014 regulations will set the sport’s engineers the challenge of completing a 300 km race distance on a fuel load of just 100 kg. To do so, teams will switch from naturally aspirated 2.4 litre V8 engines to 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged hybrid Power Units. To achieve power outputs comparable to current levels from the new Power Unit will require a 30% increase in energy efficiency.
This step forward will be largely achieved through an Energy Recovery System (ERS) that will be able to deploy ten times more energy than the current KERS. The new ERS will recover energy from both the exhaust turbine and the rear axle, as well as deploying energy back to both.
These new technical developments will offer significantly greater opportunities for technology transfer from Formula One to real-world applications in areas such as battery technology, turbocharging, energy recovery and combustion efficiency.

We have enjoyed a strong relationship that has resulted in much success over the years, including powering us to winning ways once again last year at the Spanish Grand Prix.”
