Μετά τις φήμες για αντικατάσταση του Sergio Perez από τον Kevin Magnussen, έρχεται και η επιβεβαίωση από την Βρετανική ομάδα. Ο Martin Whitmarsh δήλωσε:
Είμαστε χαρούμενοι που ο Kevin θα είναι στο πλευρό του Jenson ως οδηγός Formula 1 της McLaren για το 2014. Η επιβεβαίωσή τους είναι άλλο ένα βήμα στην ενδυνάμωση της ομάδας μας για το 2014.
Την νέα χρονιά θα είμαστε μάρτυρες της μεγαλύτερης αλλαγής τεχνικών κανονισμών, των τελευταίων ετών και κάθε ομάδα και κατασκευαστής θα φτάσει στα όρια, προσπαθώντας να επιτύχει την καλύτερη προσαρμογή στις νέες προκλήσεις.
Η ταχύτητα, η τεχνική και η εξυπνάδα του Jenson αποτελούσαν από καιρό βασικό πλεονέκτημα για την McLaren. Η γνώση του όμως στο στήσιμο του μονοθεσίου και οι τεχνικές του πληροφορίες θα είναι εξίσου σημαντικές, κατά την διάρκεια αυτού του χειμώνα και της ερχόμενης χρονιάς, καθώς πλησιάζουμε σε μια νέα τεχνολογικά Formula 1.
Ο Kevin είναι επίσης πολύ ταλαντούχος και πολύ αποφασισμένος, για αυτό και περιμένουμε πολλά από αυτόν. Επίσης κάθε φορά που δοκίμασε το μονοθέσιό μας ήταν πολύ γρήγορος και μεθοδικός και οι τεχνικές πληροφορίες που μας μετέδιδε ήταν κορυφαίες.
Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο κέρδισε φέτος το πρωτάθλημα Renault 3.5 ήταν αξιοσημείωτος, αποδεικνύοντας, όχι μόνο την ταχύτητά του αλλά και την ωριμότητα που διαθέτει, καθώς και την ιδιότητα που έχει στο να διαχειρίζεται μια εκστρατεία πρωταθλήματος .
Τέλος, θέλω να ευχαριστήσω τον Checo, ο οποίος εξελίχθηκε πολύ καλά κατά την διάρκεια μιας δύσκολης χρονιάς, όπως φαίνεται και από τους βαθμούς που πήρε στους τελευταίους αγώνες. Είναι πολύ αγαπητός και πολύ καλός οδηγός, γρήγορος και ανταγωνιστικός. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα βασιστεί πάνω σε αυτές τις αρετές του για το 2014. Όλοι στην McLaren του ευχόμαστε καλή τύχη.
Από την πλευρά του ο νεαρός Δανός δηλώνει κατενθουσιασμένος:
Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος που θα κάνω το ντεμπούτο μου στην Formula 1 με την McLaren. Θέτοντας το πολύ απλά, είναι η καλύτερη ομάδα. Από μικρό παιδί ήταν το όνειρό μου να οδηγήσω για την McLaren και δεν υπερβάλλω όταν λέω πως κάθε μέρα της ζωής μου έχει αφιερωθεί στο να γίνω οδηγός Formula 1.
Σέβομαι τους πάντες στην McLaren και θέλω να πω ένα ευχαριστώ σε όλους, κυρίως όμως στον Martin και τους συνεργάτες του, για την ευκαιρία που μου έδωσαν. Δεν θα σας απογοητεύσω.
Ισάξια θέλω να ευχαριστήσω και τον Jenson, ο οποίος είναι ο ιδανικός team-mate. Είναι υπερβολικά γρήγορος, προφανώς, αλλά είναι και πολύ έμπειρος και ικανός από τεχνική πλευρά. Είναι ένας πρωταθλητής Formula 1, που είναι και ο μελλοντικός μου στόχος, και εύχομαι να μάθω όσα μπορώ από αυτόν.

Kevin Magnussen confirmed as McLaren Formula 1 race driver for 2014

McLaren is pleased to announce that Kevin Magnussen will join Jenson Button as a McLaren Formula 1 race driver for 2014 – Jenson’s fifth year and Kevin’s first year as McLaren Formula 1 race drivers.
As McLaren gears up for the new Formula 1 season, which will see motorsport’s premier league embrace considerable technical change as it embarks on a new era, using 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines and a more dynamic energy recovery and deployment system, 33-year-old Jenson’s lengthy Formula 1 experience and brilliant technical understanding will be very important assets as the team starts its 2014 challenge, backed by the talent, promise and enthusiasm of his 21-year-old team-mate Kevin, who recently won this year’s World Series by Renault 3.5 Championship in fine style.
Kevin Magnussen said:
“I’m absolutely overjoyed to be making my Formula 1 debut with McLaren.
“I’ll put it simply: this team is the best. It’s been my dream to drive for McLaren ever since I was a small kid, and it’s no exaggeration to say that I’ve dedicated almost every day of my life to achieving the goal of becoming a McLaren Formula 1 driver.
“I have an enormous amount of respect for everyone at McLaren, and I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone, but most of all to Martin and his senior colleagues, for giving me this chance. I won’t let you down, guys!
“Equally, in Jenson, I have absolutely the ideal team-mate. He’s extremely quick, obviously, but he’s also very experienced and superbly capable from a technical perspective. He’s a Formula 1 world champion, which is what one day I also hope to become, and I’m determined to learn as much as I can from him.”
