H Porsche το είχε ανακοινώσει παλαιότερα ότι θα ετοίμαζε 3 ηλεκτρικές Boxster. Εντελώς αθόρυβα ανακοίνωσε ότι τα 3 αυτά πρωτότυπα ονομάζονται Boxster E prototypes. Η Porsche τα περιγράφει ως “κινητά εργαστήρια” και όλα εφοδιάζονται με δύο ηλεκτροκινητήρες οι οποίοι τροφοδοτούνται από μπαταρίες ιόντων λιθίου στο 29 kWh. Οι ηλεκτροκινητήρες αποδίδουν 180 kW (245 άλογα) με την Porsche να μην δίνει περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες για τις επιδόσεις, πέραν του ότι αυτές θα είναι παρόμοιες με τις επιδόσεις της Boxster S (0-100χλμ/ώρα σε 5.2 δευτερόλεπτα, τελική ταχύτητα 274 χλμ/ώρα).
