Η έκτη γενιά της BMW Σειράς 5 ξεκίνησε τις πωλήσεις της το 2010, και πέρυσι κατάφερε και πούλησε περισσότερα από 347.000 μονάδες, ενώ κατά τους πρώτους 3 μήνες του 2016, η BMW έχει δει τις πωλήσεις της Σειράς 5 να παρουσιάζουν αύξηση 42%.
Η BMW ετοιμάζει την 7η γενιά της 5άρας με την παρουσίασή της να γίνεται στην έκθεση του Παρισιού τον Σεπτέμβριο του ερχόμενου έτους και αρχικά θα κάνει την εμφάνισή της η σεντάν έκδοση, με τις Touring και GT εκδόσεις να παρουσιάζονται μέσα στο 2017, με μέρος της παραγωγής της να γίνεται στην Αυστρία από τη Magna Steyr.
