Οι συντάκτες του Autocar είχανε την απορία πως μπορεί να είναι το σπορ αυτοκίνητο του 21ου αιώνα. Και επειδή δεν του άρεσε 100% κανένα αυτοκίνητο από αυτά που υπάρχουν αυτή τη στιγμή, αποφάσισαν να δημιουργήσουν ένα δικό τους. Ο Steve Sutcliffe το αναφέρει ως British Sportscars 1 (BS1 για συντομία). Πρόκειται για ένα κεντρομήχανο διθέσιο ανοικτό αυτοκίνητο με την κίνηση να μεταφέρεται στον πίσω άξονα. Ζυγίζει μόλις 1.000 κιλά και θα κοστίζει κοντά τα £35.000 (€25.000).
Το αυτοκίνητο υποτίθεται ότι φορά τον V6 TDI της Volkswagen 3.0-λίτρων ο οποίος αποδίδει 250 άλογα με 475 Nm ροπής. Τα 0-100 χλμ/ώρα τα κάνει σε 4.5 δευτερόλεπτα με τελική ταχύτητα 236 χλμ/ώρα. Η μέση του κατανάλωση ανέρχεται στα 4.7 λίτρα/100 χλμ με εκπομπές CO2 199 γρ/χλμ. Το σασί του είναι από αλουμίνιο και χάλυβα ενώ το σώμα του από carbon και πλαστικό γυαλί. Φυσικά traction control και ESP δεν έχει θέση σε ένα τέτοιο αυτοκίνητο.
Ακούγεται πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα πρόταση αλλά δυστυχώς δεν φαίνεται να βγαίνει ποτέ στη παραγωγή.

AUTOCAR’S DREAM DRIVER’S CAR UNCOVERED
In an uncharacteristic attempt to put its money where its mouth is, Britain’s best weekly car magazine has laid off the criticism – if only for a few pages – and devised the blueprint for the perfect driver’s car.
This week, alongside the conclusive road test and first drive verdicts, car news and expert industry analysis on which Autocar’s reputation is built, you’ll find a special feature written by Autocar Editor-at-large Steve Sutcliffe, in which car assessment takes a back seat to creativity, as Steve lays out his idea of the perfect, 21st century sports car.
In response to a brief to come up with a car with the capacity to thrill, but also the real world credentials to convince a bunch of seasoned car hacks to part with their own cash, Steve came up with the British Sportscars 1 – or ‘BS1’ for short. An open-top two-seater, the BS1 is mid-engined, rear-driven, weighs less than 1000kg, and costs just £35,000. Steve’s vision was then realised by Autocar Picture Editor Ben Summerell-Youde, in the images above, which can be examined in greater detail in Autocar this week.
Commenting on his blueprint Steve Sutcliffe said “As the world of cars gets ever more complex and produces machines that are increasingly sophisticated in their design and engineering, there’s still a desire for something at the other end of the scale. A sports car that’s simple to understand and interact with. And, most of all, dead good fun to drive.”
The Autocar perfect driver’s car would offer the performance and driver appeal of cars that normally cost twice as much and offer a Le Mans type driving experience. The car’s driving experience would be characterized by torque – lots of it, delivered in accessible fashion. It would also have a paddle shift gearbox and no ESP.
“It will look low, wide, mean and beautiful, and will be utterly irresistible to its intended audience,” said Steve.
The BS1 would be built from a combination of aluminium and steel in a spaceframe chassis. The body panels would be made from glassfibre-reinforced plastic and carbonfibre – great for aesthetic appeal and keeping weight low.
An off the shelf Volkswagen 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine would be chosen for the car, and tuned to produce as much torque as possible – with target figures of 250bhp, 350lb ft, 60mpg, 199g/km, 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec, 0-100 mph in 10.0 sec and a top speed of 147 mph.
Jamie Corstorphine, Autocar Features Editor, said “I’m loving the images and I’ll definitely be first in the queue if Sutcliffe’s blueprint reaches production, but he has his work cut out to meet his twin targets of 1000kg of kerb weight and a £35,000 price tag.”
