Description of the project
Our goal was to design a Maserati Gran Turismo with classic proportions but also with sportive and modern lines. But the biggest challenge was to design a Gran Turismo that everybody could recognizethat it is a Maserati even without the logo on it!
The most important element of the car is the surface continuity on the lower part. The length of the front overhand is reduced and for not losing the classic Maserati proportions with the long hood, the greenhouse is moved 10cm back. To have a more aggressive look that would help also the aerodynamic, the back wheels are covered and the wheel cut is bigger than the real size of the wheels to give the impression that the car has bigger wheels! In the front part is maintained the typical grill of Maserati which is bigger than the one of the existing model not only for giving a more aggressive look, but also for cooling better the V8 4.2 liters Maserati engine. On the side of the car, they are two theorics which break the main volume of the car, for giving a more relaxing image to the eyes. Except of the sportive character that this car has, it must also be very comfortable for the passengers. For that reason, the whole roof is made from glass, for having the best possible visibility and by this way comfortness.
This kind of cars must be studied in every single detail. So, one ofthe most important details are the front wheels, especially because those on the back are covered. For not losing the continuity effect, the wheel comes out of the main volume of the car and gives the impression that is in continuity with the whole car even if we watch it from the front, the back or the top. The car use the Michellin airless tires.
The main volume of the car “hugs” the lower volume which are the biggest part of the front bumper and the whole back bumper. The front bumper is separated in two parts. The one where is the grill and the other one where are the aerodynamic details. The cut that separates the front bumper in two parts is the point where they meet the extensions of the side theoric and from the lower line of the grill. The back bumper is on unique surface and the elements that break this single volume are the lights, the exhaust and the air structor.
LED technology is used for the lights to give a more “fresh” impression and for having better lighting results. The back lights reproduced the trident which is the Maserati emblem. The mirrors have a cylindrical form and they are positioned on the A-pillar using mini cameras.
For the interior the car has the same effect like the exterior, with soft surfaces that make the environment more relaxed for the passengers. The tunnel “runs” all the way from the back part to the part where are positioned the instruments, for separating the interior in two differentwords, one for the driver and one for the co-driver. The instruments have cylindrical form that give a sportive look but maintain also the classic character. The middle cylinder which is the speedometer is positioned ahead of the other two. The left one has the engine rounds and the right one provides information such as the gas level and the temperature of the motor. On the left and on the right of the three cylinders there are positioned two screens where the driver can see the images from the minicamera mirrors.
The steering wheel has the central part fixed, which is a big screen and when the car has the engine turned on, it can be seen the navigator over the Maserati emblem. The top part of the steering wheel is cut for having a better visibility to the instruments. There are three spokes where the two produce the Maserati trident combined with the levers of thegearbox that have been made like the Formula 1. The seats have their base made from aluminum and the other parts from leather, to be light and modern.
