Statements

Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland, Škoda CEO:

„The Citigo is of enormous importance to Škoda. This little car will make a big contribution to our 2018 growth strategy.“

„The Citigo is the first subcompact to sold by Škoda, and it marks our entry into the segment.“

„Thanks to the Citigo and effective immediately, Škoda is now active in a vehicle segment representing almost ten per cent of current worldwide sales.“

„The Citigo is a perfect car for the city, being compact yet roomy, economical yet agile. Safe and featuring many clever ideas.

„An attractive subcompact, with a fresh and emotive appearance.“

„This car is „simply clever“ – and it is „city clever“.

Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Škoda Chief Technological Development Officer

„Our R&D team has put in great effort to create a subcompact with characteristic Škoda qualities. The team has done an excellent job: The Citigo is Škoda at its best. And it is a car that sets a large number of benchmarks in its segment.“

„Look at the Citigo, and you can see the lines of our new design language emerging. Clear shapes, precise edges, smooth surfaces without superfluous elements.“

„The engines we offer are perfect power plants for a city car: efficient, economical, sporty yet cultured. Our Green tec variant permits especially environment-conscious driving. Fuel consumption of 4.2 l per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 97 g/km, those are excellent numbers for a 44kW engine.“

Jürgen Stackmann, Škoda Chief Sales and Marketing Officer:

„The new Citigo is the perfect subcompact for anyone with high expectations even in a small car regarding quality, design, functionality, economy and safety.“

„Naturally, the Citigo will address young women and men eager to enjoy individual mobility in the first car of their own, whether by their own means or sponsored by their parents. They would be pursuing an education or work on their first job, and what they want is an agile city car offering driving pleasure at an attractive price and good looks, too.

Another typical customer group for the Citigo will be families with 2-3 cars and here especially the ladies. The Citigo is the perfect second or third car for young, modern families. Here, we are addressing women in their mid-thirties, married, with one or two smaller children and working halftime. Active women who love their family and their professional life and who are looking for a convenient, safe and affordable car that can take them to work but also drop the children off at school.

Our third target group will be the so-called „best agers“, individuals past 50 who would like to swap their big car for a subcompact, because that can take them into the city and the surrounding countryside with a minimum of hassle. They value safety and ease of use, at the same time demanding a car that is economical and convenient.“

THE NEW CITIGO: A ŠKODA FOR THE CITY – „City Clever“

ŠKODA’s seventh model line expands offer in subcompact segment

Perfect price-value ratio

Aimed at young drivers, families and „best agers“

Launch in home market in November 2011

Impressive safety features, attractive design, economical engines

An important pillar of ŠKODA’s 2018 growth strategy

Citigo, the new subcompact, continues ŠKODA’s growth offensive. In late November, the Czech manufacturer will introduce its seventh model line in its home market. Europe’s remaining countries will follow in in early summer of 2012. The 3.56-metre Citigo marks ŠKODA entry into the rapidly growing subcompact segment. The Citigo boasts a perfect price-value ratio and outstanding roominess as well as clever features, high occupant safety and perfect handling. The car will be launched in the Czech Republic as a three-door version with an additional five-door version becoming available in 2012.

„The Citigo is a central building block of our growth strategy, and it will open up the rapidly growing subcompact segment for our brand“, says ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. „Launching a subcompact will provide a sustained boost to our market position in Western and Central Europe and in Europe’s big cities. The Citigo is a perfect car for the city: compact yet roomy, economical yet agile, attractive, safe and featuring lots of clever details. The Citigo highlights all of ŠKODA’s brand values in the smallest space.“

At 3.56 metres in length, 1.64 metres in width and 1.48 metres in height, the Citigo ranks among the most compact and simultaneously the roomiest offerings in its segment. We want it to conquer new customer groups for ŠKODA especially in Europe. Prof. Vahland: „Effective immediately, we are addressing a vehicle class representing almost ten per cent of worldwide sales. Europe accounts for a quarter of this. Demand for small cars with good mileage, an attractive price and low operating costs will rise sharply in coming years. The Citigo’s arrival is perfectly timed, and we are certain it will delight many customers especially in Europe.“

Together with the Rapid compact saloon, the Citigo makes up the vanguard of a model offensive which is to take ŠKODA’s worldwide sales to at least 1.5 million by 2018. Over the next two to three years, the brand says it will introduce a new model every six months on average.

According to the manufacturer, the Citigo is aimed at young drivers as well as at families looking for a second or third car, but equally at the so-called „best agers“. „Our new model is a trans-generational subcompact for cost-conscious individuals with a high regard for quality, convenience, design and safety,“ says Prof. Vahland. This is precisely the combination of qualities that the Citigo perfectly embodies.

In keeping with the „City Clever“ motto, the Citigo is a versatile urban runabout offering both great manoeuvrability and visibility. Inside, the car delivers on typical ŠKODA values such as roominess and lots of „Value for Money“. Its long wheelbase of 2.42 metres means four passengers can take even long trips in comfort. Its Easy Entry function facilitates access to the rear seat. In addition, no competitor outside Volkswagen Group offers more boot space (251 litres) or interior width (1.42 Meter). Folding down the rear seats will increase boot volume to 951 litres.

The Citigo’s design is typical of the brand. Designers have given the subcompact a clear and distinctive appearance. One look can tell you: here comes a real ŠKODA. The finned grille in a chrome plated frame and precisely shaped headlights outline the typical ŠKODA face. Another area the designers expended themselves on is the body’s lateral layout. Here, clear outlines and large window areas create a convincing impression. The brand’s typical C-shape in the taillights and the brand logo make the Citigo unmistakable from the rear as it is from the front.

Wellbeing on board is enhanced by a clear and orderly interior design as well as a two-tone dashboard in the upper option variants. A number of clever equipment ideas make the Citigo a real „simply clever car“ à la ŠKODA. Examples include many storage implements, cup and multimedia player holders and stowage nets on the sides of the front seats’ backrests. Other clever solutions include a handbag hook incorporated into the glove compartment’s opening mechanism and a photo holder on the dashboard. A convenient netting programme makes for safe transport of objects in the trunk.

An area of particular attention in the Citigo is passenger safety. A head-thorax is available for the first time in a ŠKODA, protecting driver and front-seat passenger. This combines with other features to create a passive safety package that is unique in this class. Active safety is significantly enhanced thanks to the new „City Safe Drive“ active safety assistant. This optional urban emergency braking function automatically activates at speeds below 30 km/h, using a laser sensor to detect the risk of an impending collision. Depending on speed and traffic conditions, automatic brake actuation can reduce an accident’s severity or prevent an accident altogether. This considerably reduces the risk of inner-city pile-ups. Save for the Up! and the Seat Mii, the Citigo is the only subcompact so far to offer such an emergency braking function.

Two new three-cylinder petrol engines will be available from the Citigo’s launch: both engines displace 1.0 litre and put out 44 kW/60 hp and 55 kW/75 hp respectively. In the most economical, Green tec, variant (with 44 kW/60 PS), average fuel consumption is 4.2 l/100 km. CO2.emissions are 97 g/km. Engines and transmissions are laid out for optimum fuel efficiency in the city and in urban environments. They are designed to quickly reach their optimum operating temperature even on short journeys and operate extremely efficiently.

Despite their small size, these engines achieve high torque at low noise levels. Plans are in place to add a compressed natural gas engine at later date, with a CO2 emission of 79 g/km. In addition, 2012 will see the introduction of a five-speed automatic transmission to complement the manual gearbox, improving the Citigo’s efficiency yet again.
