Ξέρεις ότι η BMW Motorsport και κατ’επέκταση η Μini είχε υπογράψει συνεργασία με την αγγλική αγωνιστική ομάδα Prodrive, ιδιοκτησία του David Richards, για την συμμετοχή στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα Ράλυ με το Mini Countryman WRC. Πέρσι συμμετείχαν σε 6 από τους 13 αγώνες με τα οδηγικά δίδυμα των Dani Sordo/Marc Martí και Kris Mekee/Paul Nagle να έχουν άκρως ενθαρρυντικά αποτελέσματα, προετοιμάζοντας την ομάδα για την πλήρη εμπλοκή τους στο φετινό πρωτάθλημα.
Κάπου στα τέλη όμως τους προηγούμενου έτους αρχίζουν να εμφανίζονται σύννεφα μεταξύ των δυο πλευρών όταν η Mini χάνει(;) την προθεσμία για την υποβολή δήλωσης πλήρους συμμετοχής στο φετινό πρωτάθλημα του WRC. Παρόλα αυτά όμως, η παρουσία της εταιρίας στον πρώτο αγώνα του Monte Carlo και τους χιονισμένους δρόμους γύρω από το πριγκιπάτο ήταν άκρως επιτυχημένη, μιας και το πλήρωμα των Dani Sordo/Marc Martí κατέλαβε την δεύτερη θέση.
Τη προηγούμενη βδομάδα όμως η BMW Motorsport ανακοίνωσε ότι τερματίζει την συνεργασία της με την Prodrive στην ομάδα Mini WRC. Οι Γερμανοί είναι προφανώς δυσαρεστημένοι με τον τρόπο προβολής του WRC στη χώρα τους και γενικά την τηλεοπτική κάλυψη και διοργάνωση του πρωταθλήματος από την North One Sports.
Για να μην πάει χαμένη όλη η προσπάθεια και τα λεφτά που έδωσε η BMW, ανακοίνωσαν ότι η αποχώρηση από το θεσμό δεν είναι τόσο δραστική όσο αναμενόταν.
Η Mini θα συνεχίσει να συμμετέχει στο WRC αλλά την ευθύνη για τα αυτοκίνητα της θα την έχει άλλη εργοστασιακή ομάδα. Από τον αγώνα της Σουηδίας που διεξάγεται αυτό το 3ήμερο και ύστερα, τα εργοστασιακά Mini John Cooper Works θα ετοιμάζονται από την Motorsport Italia και όχι την Prodrive. Η νέα ονομασία της επίσημη εργοστασιακής ομάδας πλέον είναι WRC Team Mini Portugal και στις 2/2 πήρε έγκριση από τη FIA να συμμετέχει ως κατασκευαστής στο Πρωτάθλημα για τους εναπομείναντες 12 αγώνες. Τα πληρώματα της ομάδας θα είναι ο Πορτογάλος Armindo Araujo με συνοδηγό τον Miguel Ramalho και ο Βραζιλιάνος Paulo Nobre με συνοδηγό τον Edu Paula.
Η βρετανική Prodrive όμως δε χάνεται από το προσκήνιο καθώς θα ετοιμάζει τα αυτοκίνητα για τους ιδιώτες. Η, μέχρι πρότεινως εργοστασιακή ομάδα θα χαρακτηρίζεται ως ιδιωτική με εργοστασιακή υποστήριξη με μέχρι στιγμής οδηγό τον Dani Sordo. Παράλληλα, η Prodrive θα βοηθάει την BMW στην εξέλιξη του αυτοκινήτου.

This long-term homologation ensures that the MINI John Cooper Works WRC can be used in the premier league of rallying, and other series in accordance with FIA regulations, up to and including 2018. The cooperation with Prodrive will be put on a new basis. Prodrive remains responsible for the construction and support of MINI John Cooper Works WRC customer vehicles, and will continue to work with the BMW Group on the further development of the car. The WRC Team, run by Prodrive, will from now on start as a works-supported private team.
