In its Mercedes-Benz Cars division, the company sold as many vehicles as never before in a month and also set a new sales record in the first quarter. A total of 340,877 Mercedes-Benz, smart, and Maybach vehicles (+11.6%) were delivered, including 142,278 units (+9.8%) sold in March alone.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes‑Benz Cars: “Following up on our record sales last year, we are also off to a highly successful start in 2012. To date we have recorded a new sales record in every month of this year and with 313,902 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars sold, we have set a new high for the first quarter. March was even the strongest sales month of the company’s history. Besides our excellent start to the year it is especially the great customer response on the new models which makes me very confident that we will achieve our goal to post a new sales record in 2012. With the start of production of the new B-Class in Kecskemét last week, we will have even more vehicles available to better meet the high demand.”

The first quarter saw strong sales among others in the SUV segment. Dr. Schmidt continued: “Driven by the new M-Class, SUV sales developed excellently in the first quarter as they already did in full-year 2011. Tomorrow for the first time we will present the completely new GL and the new generation of the GLK at New York International Auto Show. With our SUV offensive we will extend sales further in this segment.” Besides the GLK and GL also the SL 65 AMG has its world premiere at the auto show in New York.

In the whole NAFTA region deliveries have been very satisfying in the first quarter (70,259 units, +15.5%). In the first three months of the year, Mercedes-Benz set a new sales record in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Particularly noteworthy was the dynamic development in the U.S., where sales rose by 15.3% (61,513 units). Also in the month of March, the company achieved another sales record in the U.S.: 23,134 vehicles were delivered to customers (+7.7%).

The development of the Mercedes-Benz brand also had a successful first quarter in China (incl. Hong Kong). 51,328 customers (+19.5%) purchased a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle from January to March, setting a new sales record for this period. Record sales were also registered there in March (17,660 units, +16.1%).

In Russia and India, Mercedes-Benz also recorded its highest-ever sales for the first quarter and for the month of March. Since the beginning of the year, sales have climbed by 32.7% in Russia, and 6.9% in India. Sales development of Mercedes-Benz has been especially successful in Japan, where first-quarter sales grew by 44.0% compared to the same period last year.

In the first three months of 2012, Mercedes-Benz has enjoyed outstanding sales in Germany, with 56,552 units sold since the beginning of the year, an increase of 14.6%. Also in March, Mercedes-Benz successfully sustained its position on its homemarket with a growth rate of 10.5%, handing over a total of 25,932 vehicles. Thus, Mercedes-Benz is again the top-selling premium brand in the month of March as well as in the first quarter. Sales in the rest of the region of Western Europe also developed strongly in March and in the first quarter. From January to March the brand with the star increased its sales on the declining total market by 6.7% (78,135 units). During this period, demand for Mercedes-Benz was especially high in Switzerland (+37.3%), France (+29.0%), and Great Britain (+9.6%). In Great Britain as well as in Switzerland Mercedes-Benz posted new sales records in the first quarter.

Sales of Mercedes-Benz models have developed very dynamically since the start of the year, above all the models of the C-Class segment. Despite new competitors, sales rose by 27.0% to 99,660 units. The S-Class sedan also continues to enjoy strong demand. Since January, sales of the brand’s flagship rose by over a quarter (+27.5%, 21,507 units) compared to the previous year. The new B-Class received again excellent customer response, with more than 35,000 units sold since it was launched to the market in November. In the year of the introduction of its successor, the A-Class increased its sales by 17.0% (20,772 units) in the first quarter. The E-Class sedan and estate also continue to be popular, with a total of 57,980 units (+3.4%) delivered to customers. Mercedes-Benz SUVs were in continued demand with sales of 59,116 vehicles, which set yet another record, topping last year’s high for the same period. The greatest contributors to this success were the M-Class (+19.0%), the G-Class (+39.4%), posting a new sales record, and the GL-Class, whose sales put on by 9.9% shortly before the introduction of its successor.

The smart fortwo also joined in the success of the Mercedes-Benz models in the first quarter. Sales totaled 26,975 units, topping the previous year’s sales by 8.0%. Especially in China (incl. Hong Kong) demand for the innovative two-seater continues to be persistently high. The number of vehicles delivered since January has doubled (4,795 units, +105.1%), setting a new sales record. Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting: “Daimler is on the way to its best form.”

  • Affirmation of earnings forecast for 2012
  • Mercedes-Benz Cars post best-ever first quarter with 12% growth in unit sales
  • Daimler Trucks’ unit sales up by 20% from January through March
  • Shareholders decide on a dividend of €2.20 per share

Berlin – Daimler AG has made an excellent start to the year 2012. “Our company is on the way to its best form, but is not there yet. We are confident we can do more, and that also applies to our share price,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, according to the text of his speech to the expected 5,800 shareholders at the International Congress Center (ICC) in Berlin.

In the first three months of the year 2012, the Group once again sold more vehicles than in the same period of last year. Unit sales by Mercedes-Benz Cars in the period of January through March increased by 12% to more than 340,000 units compared with the prior-year period. The division thus achieved its best-ever first quarter and its best-ever monthly unit sales in March. The growth drivers since January have been the C-Class models (plus 27%), the S-Class (plus 18%) and the SUV segment (plus 8%). There was also strong demand for the new B-Class, the first of five cars in the new compact range, with orders received for over 100,000 units to date. Although the B-Class is so far only available in Europe, more than 35,000 cars have already been delivered to customers. In September, the new A-Class will be launched, the second car of the new compact car portfolio.

Global car markets should grow by 4% this year. “At Mercedes, we’re on a roll, and we want to beat that,” said Zetsche and affirmed the unit-sales forecast for Mercedes-Benz Cars. The division assumes that this year it will surpass the unit-sales record it set in 2011.

The Daimler Trucks division was also very successful with its strong product portfolio; according to preliminary figures, it sold about 107,000 vehicles from January through March of this year (plus 20%). A major contribution came from Daimler Trucks North America with growth of 41%. Fuso also continued its positive development in Japan, while unit sales in Europe and Latin America decreased by 5%.

From today’s perspective, the division anticipates further growth in unit sales in 2012. In any case, the new Actros is likely to gain market share in the euro zone. The opening of a new plant in Chennai, India in the next few days will be an important step towards conquering new sales markets. As of the third quarter, trucks will be produced specifically for the Indian market under the “BharatBenz” brand.

The Mercedes-Benz Vans division’s core markets developed as follows in the first three months of the year: Unit sales increased by 23% in North America and by 10% in Latin America, despite the upcoming model change for the Sprinter in the latter market. In Europe, however, unit sales decreased by 8%. The division is nonetheless confident for the full year that it will maintain the level of unit sales in the euro zone that it achieved in 2011.As of September, sales will be stimulated by the new Citan city van, following its debut at Germany’s IAA international motor show for commercial vehicles in that month. This new small van targets a segment with a total volume of about 700,000 vehicles per annum, of which Mercedes-Benz Vans intends to take a market share of 4 to 5%.

Daimler Buses sold about 5,000 units in the first quarter, lower than the prior-year number. According to preliminary figures, Daimler Financial Services smoothly continued its business development of 2011 and increased its new business to €8.2 billion in the first quarter of this year. The division’s contract volume remained at a record level.

Based on the divisions’ development, Zetsche affirmed the forecasts for 2012: The Group expects its total unit sales to increase again significantly along with further revenue growth. The target for EBIT from the ongoing business is the high level of the prior year (2011: €9.0 billion).

Achieving sustained growth through innovation

The motto of this year’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, “Growth and Innovation,” brings together two topics of fundamental importance for the future of the Daimler Group. By 2020, the annual global vehicle market should have growth by approximately 40 million to about 120 million units. “The question is not whether this growth will take place, but how it can be made sustainable,” said Zetsche. He believes that innovation has the potential to convert growth into prosperity. “Where that occurs, growth will be ecologically compatible and productive for both society and the economy,” explained Zetsche.

The Daimler Group is at the forefront with both of these topics, and has a first-class starting point for sustained innovation and profitable growth. With the Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy, the Mercedes-Benz brand aims to reclaim its position as the leading manufacturer of premium automobiles also in terms of unit sales. Daimler Trucks intends to defend its first place with its Global Excellence strategy. And the other divisions have similar plans to defend or take over the top position.

In 2012 and 2013 alone, the Group will invest €10.9 billion in research and development and €10.6 billion in property, plant and equipment. Daimler will extend its leading role with green technologies. Some examples are the further development of the automobile into a zero-emission vehicle and the digital networking of automobiles to control traffic and reduce congestion.

With internal-combustion engines, the CO2 emissions of Mercedes-Benz Cars’ fleet has been reduced within two vehicle generations by 35% to an average of 150 grams per kilometer. A fleet average of 125 g/km is to be achieved by 2016.

Mercedes-Benz already sells the world’s most economical full-size sedan: the E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid with consumption of 4.2 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. Starting this summer, the Daimler Group will be the first premium manufacturer to supply an electric car for all: the e-smart.

Affirmation of medium-term goals

At the event in Berlin, Zetsche affirmed Daimler’s medium-term targets for unit sales and earnings: In the year 2015, more than 1.6 million Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, over half a million trucks, more than 400,000 vans and approximately 42,000 buses are to be sold.

As of the year 2013, Daimler aims to achieve an average return on sales in its automotive business of 9%. The targets for the divisions are a return on sales of 10% for Mercedes-Benz Cars, 8% for Daimler Trucks, 9% for Mercedes-Benz Vans and 6% for Daimler Buses, and a return on equity of 17% for Daimler Financial Services. Mercedes-Benz Vans and Daimler Financial Services already achieved or surpassed their targets in 2011.

Record year 2011 and a high dividend

Daimler had presented its figures for the year 2011 in February. In its jubilee year, the Group set records for unit sales, revenue, EBIT and net profit. Worldwide, 2.1 million vehicles were sold and total revenue increased by 9% to €106.5 billion (2010: €97.8 billion). Group EBIT amounted to €8.8 billion (2010: €7.3 billion) and the Group’s EBIT from the ongoing business was €9.0 billion (2010: €7.2 billion). Net profit increased to €6.0 billion (2010: €4.7 billion).

In view of the very positive business development, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board proposed the distribution of a dividend of €2.20 per share at today’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting. This constitutes a total payout of almost €2.3 billion and a dividend ratio of about 40% in relation to the Group’s net profit. The dividend for the year 2011 is one of the highest in Daimler’s history.

Substantial growth was achieved for the long-wheelbase Audi A4, built locally in China: 24,536 deliveries (a rise of 68 percent). Sales of the Audi Q5 nearly doubled (93 percent) to 20,870 units. BMW Group achieves record first quarter in worldwide sales

New York/Munich. The BMW Group has achieved its best ever first quarter in worldwide sales. “With over 400,000 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles sold worldwide, we have had an outstanding first quarter and the best ever in the company’s history,” said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW, from the New York Auto Show. “We have seen over 16% growth in the U.S. this quarter and we expect further momentum with the new BMW 3 Series Sedan on the market, as well as the introduction of the BMW X1 to the U.S. in September this year.”

The introduction of the BMW X1 to the U.S. market will build upon its global success. Since its launch at the end of 2009, over 264,000 units have been sold worldwide, making it the leader in its segment.

Record first quarters in both the U.S. and China contributed to the BMW Group’s outstanding first quarter sales results. In the U.S., sales climbed +13% in March to 29,806 vehicles (prev. yr. 26,382). Year to date, 75,729 vehicles have been sold in the U.S., an increase of +16.6% over the previous year (64,957). More than 346,000 vehicles sold – AUDI AG achieves best quarter in company history

  • Sales chief Schwarzenbauer: “We expect growth to continue in the months to come”
  • Record quarter for the four rings in China and the USA
  • March was the best month in the company’s history, with around 143,500 automobiles delivered worldwide

AUDI AG is maintaining its growth course. Thanks to some 346,100 vehicles delivered – an increase of 10.8 percent – this past quarter was the best in company history. This strong start to the year was due in part to March figures: around 143,500 units delivered and a 14.1 percent rise in sales. Audi had never sold so many vehicles in a single month. Growth from January through March was fueled in particular by customers in the USA and China, where Audi achieved record sales, as well. The company likewise registered growth in Eastern Europe and in its domestic German market.

“We kicked off 2012 very successfully and expect growth to continue in the months to come,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “Our new A3 will be rolled out from the second half of this year, and we have just introduced the new-generation A6L in China.” The luxury sedan’s long-wheelbase version leads its segment in China.

Audi just completed the best quarter ever in China – the company achieved growth of 40.5 percent by selling 25,941 more new Audi models to Chinese customers than in the first quarter of 2011. Of the 31,505 vehicles delivered in March (+37 percent), the largest share was achieved by the locally produced A4L, A6L and Q5 models. 4,674 more people purchased the Audi SUV (+139.9 percent), compared to March 2011. Moreover, China remains the most important market for the Audi A8, accounting for over 40 percent of global sales of this luxury sedan.

Luxury-class models are giving the four rings an ongoing boost in the USA, too. Almost twice as many customers took delivery of an A6 during the first three months of 2012 than in the prior-year period (+87.3 percent to 3,581 units). All in all, Audi sold 29,470 automobiles in the first quarter, achieving growth of 16.1 percent – also a company record in the United States. Sales rose by a double-digit figure once again in March, by 18 percent to 11,585 vehicles. Also, there was double-digit sales growth in other key markets in the Americas. For example, first-quarter sales rose by 23.3 percent in Canada, 37.3 percent in Brazil and 49.3 percent inArgentina.

The automobile manufacturer also improved its upward trend in Germany. Audi sold 25,140 units last month for an increase of 4.8 percent. Overall growth for the first three months of 2012 amounted to 3 percent, as 57,976 Audi models were sold in Germany. The A6 family played a key role, as German customers took delivery of 12,448 A6 units in the first quarter (+74 percent). The Avant remains especially popular in Germany, and the latest generation is no exception. Some two-thirds of A6 customers opted for this version.

The trend for Europe as a whole is upward for the Ingolstadt-based company, too. Although Audi concluded the first quarter with a slight drop in sales of 0.1 percent, the company’s growth rates have increased in each consecutive month, with growth in March of 7 percent. This was due especially to rates of growth in three key countries. March sales rose in the United Kingdom by 8.6 percent to 23,062 units and in France by 5.4 percent to 6,219 units. Growth proved especially robust in Russia, where Audi boosted March sales by 99.9 percent to 3,404 units. Sales were particularly impressive for the new generation of the A5 family, the SUV models and the new A6.

Growth markets such as India and South Korea also made important contributions to the quarterly sales record. Audi sales in India rose by 40.8 percent to 2,269 vehicles sold during the first quarter. The company also registered year-on-year growth of 41.7 percent in South Korea by selling 3,365 units.
