BMW model update programme as from July.

Munich. With effect from July 2012, an extensive range of model update measures will again render many BMW models even more attractive. It comprises an additional choice of engines as well as new standard and optional equipment features. The focus will be on a further reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, enhanced safety and driving pleasure as well as increased comfort and user convenience.

With the BMW 114i, an attractive entry-level engine is being introduced to the 1 Series. The BMW M135i is to be added to the BMW 1 Series as a new high-performance, top-of-the-range compact sedan. BMW 1 Series variants featuring xDrive are also being introduced for the first time. This intelligent four-wheel drive system is in the pipeline for the BMW 120d and the new BMW M135i.

From the summer, BMW xDrive will be available for the first time in conjunction with three petrol engine variants of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. A fourth model is expected to be available from autumn, the BMW 320d. Furthermore, with the BMW 330d, the first model of the latest generation will be offered with the straight six-cylinder diesel power unit. Another model in preparation is the highly efficient BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition.

The BMW 6 Series will feature, inter alia, a whole new range of assistance systems. The option Speed Limit Info is to be supplemented by No Passing Info in the new BMW 6 Series. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is also undergoing an extensive upgrade: in addition to the new model BMW Gran Turismo 520d, revised engines for the BMW Gran Turismo 530d and the BMW Gran Turismo 550i, the standard feature Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode, optional Active Protection and the BMW Parking Assistant are also being introduced. As an option, it is possible to equip the BMW Gran Turismo 530d with technologies for fulfilling the EU6 exhaust emission standard. The same applies to the BMW 330d Sedan. If desired, the BMW X3 xDrive 20d can now also be equipped to conform with the EU6 emission standard.

BMW 1 Series: New basic engines, new top-of-the-range model BMW M135i and BMW xDrive.

The range of five-door BMW 1 Series models is being supplemented by various new engine options. The BMW 114i will be launched as early as in July of this year. The new basic BMW 1 Series power unit delivers 75 kW/102 hp with a maximum torque of 180 Nm. Average fuel consumption is just 5.5 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions are only 129 g/km. The BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine combines a Twin Scroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double VANOS and High Precision Injection. The result is an engine that is both powerful and extremely efficient, also thanks to further BMW EfficientDynamics measures such as the Auto Start Stop function, Shift Point Indicator in conjunction with the six-speed manual transmission and brake energy regeneration.

The BMW M135i is the top-of-the-range version of the BMW 1 Series. This distinctively dynamic vehicle is an integral part of the new product category BMW M Performance Automobile produced by the BMW M GmbH. It is positioned between the most powerful BMW series production models and thoroughbred BMW M vehicles. BMW M Performance power units generally boast a noticeably higher performance than the previously most powerful engines of any BMW series and have M-specific characteristics in terms of suspension setting and visual appearance, though without any limitations in terms of suitability for everyday use. Heart of the new BMW M135i is the straight six-cylinder petrol engine with Twin Scroll Turbo technology, Valvetronic, Double VANOS and High Precision Injection. It delivers 235 kW/320 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, power transfer being effected by the six-speed manual transmission fitted as standard. As a result, the most powerful BMW 1 Series offers dynamic performance worthy of a sports car. The vehicle sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 4.9 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). In spite of these figures, the BMW M135i has an average fuel consumption of just 7.5 l/100 km as per the EU test cycle, and a CO2 emission level of around 175 g/km. (All figures apply to the five-door BMW 1 Series with an optional eight-speed automatic transmission).

For the first time in the history of the BMW 1 Series, the intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive will be available as an option. The models BMW 120d xDrive and BMW M135i xDrive are due out shortly.

BMW 3 Series: New BMW 3 Series Sedan with BMW xDrive as from the summer.

As from the second half of the year, the new BMW 3 Series Sedan will be optionally equipped with the intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. The dynamic sports sedan and BMW xDrive will form an ideal combination in the models BMW 320i, BMW 328i and BMW 335i. Thanks to electronic control and millisecond-fast power distribution between the front and rear wheels, BMW xDrive guarantees supreme traction, unparalleled safety and first-class handling. Furthermore, xDrive ensures optimum performance in all kinds of weather and road conditions. As a result, the potential of even the most powerful BMW 3 Series four-wheel drive sedan, the BMW 335i xDrive delivering 225 kW/306 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm, can be utilised in a particularly efficient way. The BMW 335i xDrive does the sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. Power distribution of BMW xDrive is effected so rapidly that the vehicle is stabilised before the driver even notices the need to react. The model 320d xDrive is also in preparation.

BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition in preparation.

With the new BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition, an additional EfficientDynamics Edition petrol model is now being developed based on the successful diesel model BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition. The highly efficient sedan is powered by a 125 kW/170 bhp 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine. A manual 6-speed transmission takes care of power transmission. The BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds, with fuel consumption at 5.2/100 km and CO2 emissions at just 124 grams per kilometre (all figures provisional). The market launch is planned for the end of 2012.

A high level of efficiency also characterises the new entry-level model BMW 316i. The sedan is currently in preparation and is expected to round off the range at the end of 2012. Its 4-cylinder in-line engine delivers 100 kW/136 bhp. Power transmission is effected by a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The BMW 316i does the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and its level of CO2 emissions is at 134 to 137 g/km (all figures provisional).

M Sport Package and further possibilities for individualising the new BMW 3 Series Sedan.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan comes as standard as the embodiment of the dynamic, agile four-door sedan. The sporty driving dynamics, class-leading handling and an elegant appearance are good prerequisites for enhancing driving pleasure even further. From July, the M Sport Package featuring the M Aerodynamics Package and a range of BMW Individual options will be on offer. With the M Sport Package there will be a combination of equipment options that emphasise the sporty attributes of the new BMW 3 Series even further. These include, for example, special M doorsills and the M footrest, high gloss chrome exhaust tailpipes, a special instrument cluster with red accentuating trim and remote control with M designation (car key).

Noticeably improved braking is ensured by the optionally available M Sports braking system featuring 18-inch lightweight brake discs on the front axle and 17-inch discs at the rear respectively. Their aluminium multi-piston fixed calipers are finished in dark blue metallic. There is a choice of attractive 18-inch light alloys boasting a star spoke design or the optional 19-inch wheels, which also contribute towards a further enhancement of driving dynamics.

In order to perfect the new BMW 3 Series Sedan with regard to aerodynamics and optics, the M Sport package includes the M Aerodynamics Package. It comprises sportily differentiated rear and front bumpers and side sills. Further individualisation is possible thanks to BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line for the exterior and a BMW Individual anthracite roof lining for the interior.

BMW 5 Series: New optional feature for all BMW 5 Series: individualised cockpit thanks to multifunction instrument display.

An optional feature that will enhance operation of the automobile in all BMW 5 Series models (except BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition and BMW ActiveHybrid 5): the multifunction instrument display. This is a freely programmable cockpit display that introduces a new dimension to driver information. Enhanced Black Panel technology opens completely new possibilities for the display of information. Via the high-grade, homogeneous black surface of the 10.25-inch display, the freely combinable instrument integrates significantly more functions than the conventional instrument panel that it is replacing. However, the familiar arrangement comprising four round instruments still remains. Two chrome rings, which open up towards each other, are visible on the black surface. Together with the displays for tank/oil temperature they remain visible on the display even when the ignition is turned off. With the aid of the Driving Experience Control function, the COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT modes can be clearly visually differentiated from one another on the instrument cluster. Whilst in the COMFORT mode a conventional arrangement of four closed round instruments is to be seen, in the modes ECO PRO and SPORT the rings open up to display additional information between the two round instruments. In the ECO PRO mode the rev counter becomes an EfficientDynamics display, showing how efficiently the vehicle is currently being driven. Here the instrument panel shows the extended range based on the adapted driving style. In the SPORT mode speed is only displayed digitally via a large figure in the centre the speedometer, whilst the selected gear is clearly displayed in the centre of the rev counter. Besides changing colour, the displays in the instrument cluster provide additional tailor-made information such as status and function displays, check control and navigation data, all of which can be individually accessed as required.

Bang & Olufsen High End Surround-Sound System.

From July, the Bang & Olufsen High End Surround-Sound System will be optionally available for all models of the BMW 5 Series. This system facilitates the reproduction of music in outstanding sound quality via 16 active loudspeakers with a total output of 1,200 Watt, whereby it is possible to choose between the “Studio” mode offering a clear sound and the “Extended” mode, which has the effect of an extended sound space. In both cases a unique surround effect is achieved. Equally as impressive as the sound experience offered by the system is the so-called Floating Design with its perfect styling and the precision crafted hole pattern of the speaker grille so characteristic of Bang & Olufsen sound equipment. The system’s centre speaker features the Acoustic Lens Technology developed by Bang & Olufsen. As soon as the audio system is activated, the centre element with the integrated medium-range speaker rises from the dashboard to release the lens of the tweeter. The lens radiates its signals evenly into the interior within an angle of 180 degrees, thereby ensuring an exceptionally harmonious distribution of sound.

Contactless opening of the tailgate.

Also starting July, optional equipment on all BMW 5 Series models will include as an integral part of the Comfort Access function the possibility of contactless opening of the boot lid. With this solution from BMW ConnectedDrive the boot lid of the vehicle can be opened without being touched. A mere movement of the foot below the rear bumper is sufficient to activate the opening mechanism. For this purpose, sensors are installed at different heights inside the bumper covering. They identify the gesticulation of the foot movement between the shin and the tip of the foot and send signals with special algorithms to the on-board computer. However, right of access is only granted if the system simultaneously identifies the Comfort Access remote control (key) carried by the person wishing to gain access. Operational safety is guaranteed at all times and misuse ruled out. Electrical operation of the tailgate will be a standard feature of all BMW 5 Series models from July.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo:

New: BMW 520d Gran Turismo, revised engines for the BMW 550i Gran Turismo and the BMW 530d Gran Turismo, compliance with EU6 exhaust emission standard as an option for the BMW 530d Gran Turismo, Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode as standard

With the new, additional model BMW 520d Gran Turismo, the range of this BMW 5 Series variant, previously offered with four different engines, is being supplemented by an exceptionally fuel-efficient version. Revised engines for the BMW 550i Gran Turismo and the BMW 530d Gran Turismo also render this model more attractive.

The BMW 520d Gran Turismo is equipped with the two-litre diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology (Variable Twin Turbo principle, Common Rail direct injection). The state-of-the-art straight four-cylinder power unit delivers 135 kW/184 hp with a maximum torque of 380 Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 8.9 seconds and average fuel consumption is approximately 5.3 l/100 km with a CO2 emission level of around 139 g/km.

Power output of the V8 engine has been boosted by 30 kW/43 hp to 330 kW/450 hp and maximum torque increased by 50 to 650 Nm. In spite of significantly higher performance (BMW 550i Gran Turismo: 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds instead of the previous 5.5 seconds), it was possible to reduce fuel consumption (9.2 l/100 km) and the CO2 emission level (214 g/km) yet again. This power unit strengthens BMW’s lead in the segment in terms of the relation between driving pleasure and fuel economy even further.

On the models BMW 530d Gran Turismo and BMW 530d xDrive Gran Turismo, power output was increased by 10 kW/14 hp to 190 kW/258 hp, maximum torque by 20 to 560 Nm. In spite of considerably increased performance, a further reduction in the fuel consumption of the straight six-cylinder diesel engine featuring variable turbine geometry and Common Rail fuel injection with solenoid injectors (BMW 530d Gran Turismo: 5.8 l/100 km) and CO2 emissions (153 g/km) has been achieved. The two redesigned engines are also employed in the models featuring the intelligent four-wheel drive concept xDrive.

New: BMW 530d Gran Turismo conforms with the EU6 emission standard.

Starting in July, it will be possible to equip the model BMW 530d Gran Turismo with optional BMW BluePerformance technology as a targeted measure for optimising the quality of exhaust gases. In conjunction with the diesel particulate filter and the oxidation catalyst, the Nox storage catalyst largely reduces nitrogen oxides, meaning that thanks to this special equipment, the BMW 530d Gran Turismo already fulfils the requirements stipulated by the EU6 exhaust emission standard, which is not due to come into effect until 2014.

New: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo with Auto Start Stop function.

Apart from the new and revised engines featured in the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, efficiency is now also additionally increased by the Auto Start Stop function provided as standard. This technology is an integral part of BMW Efficient Dynamics measures. The engine is automatically switched off as soon as the vehicle comes to a halt at a red light, in a traffic jam or at a level crossing, for example. When the driver releases the brake, the engine restarts automatically so that the journey may be continued. The result is a reduction in fuel consumption.

New: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo with electromechanical steering.

From July and within the framework of BMW EfficientDynamics measures, all BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo models will feature the power steering system EPS (Electronic Power Steering). EPS only become active when it is actually required, resulting in better fuel economy. In addition to the high level of efficiency, the advantages of the EPS system include its low weight, the high degree of precision along with clear and concise response and a comfortable setting.

New: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo featuring Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode.

Also from July, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo will be equipped as standard with Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode. Using the switch located to the left of the gearshift lever, the driver can change the vehicle’s overall characteristics according to each driving situation or personal preference to either a sporty or comfortable setting, or decide in favour of a particularly fuel-efficient style of driving. By means of the Driving Experience Control function, accelerator pedal progression, engine response, power steering characteristics and response thresholds of the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) are influenced. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the Servotronic function, the automatic transmission and the Dynamic Damper Control function are also incorporated into the system. The ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT modes
are accessed using a shift paddle, with which each predefined drive train and suspension component set-up is selected. In the ECO PRO mode average fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 20 percent, vehicle range increased accordingly and this increase displayed to the driver as additionally gained kilometres.

New: The Active Protection Safety Package.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is to be equipped for the first time with the Active Protection safety package, an integral part of BMW ConnectedDrive. This driver assistance system becomes active at a speed of 18 km/h by automatically tightening the seatbelt in order to eliminate slack. In a critical situation, the front seatbelts are tightened and the side windows and sliding sunroof closed. Active Protection identifies a potential collision either by means of a front-mounted camera or radar, through deliberate emergency braking or distinctive understeering or oversteering of the vehicle. In the event of an unavoidable collision, the system automatically slows the vehicle down. Following the collision, the vehicle is brought to a halt using maximum braking force. It is then held for 1.5 seconds with the brakes blocked, significantly reducing the likelihood of an additional collision.

New: Optional BMW Parking Assistant.

The BMW Parking Assistant is a further comfort-relevant driver assistance system from BMW ConnectedDrive, which can also be ordered for the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo as from July. The BMW Parking Assistant helps the driver find a parking space and park in it. Side-integrated ultrasound sensors assist in the search for a parking space. At speeds of up to 35 km/h these sensors measure the length and width of parking spaces at the side of the road and on hard shoulders. These parking spaces must be at least 1.20 metres longer than the vehicle. When the system is activated, the driver is immediately informed of a potential parking space when passing. Otherwise this information is displayed on the on-board monitor when reverse gear is engaged. By pressing the iDrive
controller the driver then confirms that the Parking Assistant is required. Then all the driver has to do is accelerate or brake as necessary and keep an eye on the surroundings. The Parking Assistant does the job of manoeuvring accurately backwards into the parking space. Acoustic and visual signals given by the Park Distance Control system (PDC), the rear-view camera or the Surround View system assist the driver in maintaining the required distance from other vehicles or demarcations.

BMW 6 Series: New for all models of the BMW 6 Series: No Passing Info display.

The new function No Passing Info supplements Speed Limit Info from BMW ConnectedDrive. It serves to avoid potentially hazardous overtaking manoeuvres by identifying signposted routes on which overtaking is banned and when the ban is lifted.

New: BMW 6 Series Coupe with Auto Start Stop function.

With effect from 2012, the top model of the 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 650i xDrive, will be equipped as standard with the Auto Start Stop function. Being an integral part of BMW EfficientDynamics measures, fuel consumption will be significantly reduced as a result. The engine is automatically switched off as soon as the vehicle comes to a halt at a red light, in a traffic jam or at a level crossing, for example. When the driver releases the brake, the engine restarts automatically, allowing the journey to be continued.

BMW Z4: New with BMW Individual hardtop in two contrasting colours.

From July, the BMW Z4, which converts from a coupe to a roadster in no time at all (even while travelling, at speeds up to 40 km/h) thanks to a retractable hardtop, will offer a new optional feature as a visual refinement of the tasteful kind – the BMW Individual hardtop in contrasting colours.
There is a choice between the BMW Individual hardtop in Black non-metallic for a sportier look or in Titan Silver metallic for more elegance. Whatever the choice, the contrasting roof and body colours underscore the effect of the roadster silhouette even with the roof closed.

BMW X3: Three new optional equipment features for the BMW X3.

From August, there will be a choice of new optional features for the BMW X3. A sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles and an M leather-clad steering wheel with shift paddles are both new features for all BMW X3 models with standard or optional automatic transmission. Likewise as from August, it will also be possible to order the BMW X3 xDrive 20d with environmentally friendly BluePerformance technology, which meets the requirements of the EU6 exhaust emission standard.
