ABT elite conveyance– RS6-R with 730 hp and 920 Nm
When you read 730 hp/537 kW, you may first think of an Italian super-sports-car or a big truck but not of a roadworthy family or business estate. But ABT Sportsline is still able to surprise its target group and at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 will present its latest Audi RS6 model, the 320 kph ABT RS6-R. “Mind you, the R stands for racy, not for rough or rude,” says CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt: “As with the normal Audi RS6, ours also provides the utmost comfort, sumptuousness and usefulness, limited to 25 cars worldwide.“
To turn this high-performance car into a refined gem, ABT uses ABT Power. This kit includes the ABT Engine Control unit, a specially developed software and a specially adapted stainless steel exhaust system – including a Y-pipe and sport-type catalytic converter – that makes for a superb sound and an even more attractive look with its two double end pipes.
But power isn’t everything. In order to make the Avant even more of a sports car, the engineers used an ABT height adjustable spring kit. Dunlop high-performance tyres specially selected for the RS6-R complete this dynamic set-up. This inviting features may make it hard for some people to accept that this racy ABT in Geneva can only be viewed while it is standing still. But that may be just as well, because it makes for a better appreciation of the extensive body kit and the lavish 22-inch ABT DR alloy wheels. Selected parts made of exposed red carbon is what all body components have in common: they can be found on the front lip with its blades, air inlet covers including flics, side skirt attachments with side blades and the rear skirt. Mirror caps, fender inserts and a rear spoiler complete the imposing look.
And since passengers would find it difficult to see their car in the rear-view mirror, ABT also “decorated” the interior with letterings and embroidery that are as discreet as they are tasteful. Carbon-shift paddels and LED-shifting lights on the steering wheel help finding the perfect gear shift moment.

Electrical “elevation” – ABT contests in the new FIA Formula E
ABT Sportsline has already dealt with electrical mobility within many a regional project. But now the Bavarian company gets into the racing mode: from September 2014 the leading tuner of cars of the Volkswagen and Audi brands will take part in the FIA’s brand new E-series under the name Audi Sport ABT Formula-E Team. And as the first of the ten teams, the Bavarians have already found their drivers: Audi factory driver Lucas di Grassi and GP2 youngster Daniel Abt.
“This is an entirely new chapter in our company’s 60-year motorsport history,” says a pleased CEO Hans Jürgen Abt: “For us, this is a fascinating new challenge and we now know that electrical drives may be free of emissions but certainly not free of emotions.“ The Bavarians are particularly proud of being the only German team yet in this international series, which, after all, will also see a race in Berlin. “As of now, we are an unofficial electrical motorsport national team of sorts,“ says ABT sports director Thomas Biermaier, who is very ambitious now: “We not only want to be one of the first teams but also one of the top teams.” And there is certainly no lack of racing know-how. After all, ABT is a five-time DTM champion, not to mention other series. Formula sports is also well known. Daniel Abt, the son of Hans-Jürgen Abt, is now a driver in the GP2, a series usually deemed a kind of junior Formula 1. Lucas di Grassi on the other hand has gained direct Formula 1 experience and is considered an expert at any rate. “With Daniel and Lucas we have signed our dream pair, if you will,“ says a smiling team boss Hans-Jürgen Abt: “Thanks to all those at Audi who made Lucas available for the Formula E. He had been involved in the development of the series right from the start.“
The standard chassis used shows a full 200 kW (272 hp) during the training and qualifying. 100 kph are reached in 3 seconds. While in the energy-saving racing mode, this is lowered to 133 kW (181 hp). There still is the Push-to-Pass-Button, which for a brief period activates another 67 kW (91 hp). So there will be plenty of exciting passing manoeuvres. Since training, qualifying and the race all take place on one and the same day, spectators will find an extraordinary atmosphere. Berlin aside, the first season will see races in Beijing, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Miami, Monaco and London.

Back to the top: the ABT Golf VII GTI Dark Edition
At the end of 2013, Volkswagen presented its new “R“ and thereby internally dethroned the GTI as the most powerful Golf VII. ABT Sportsline, however, has been loyal to the GTI for many decades and has now led this compact rocket back to the top. Just like the serial Golf R, the uprated ABT GTI also shows 300 hp or 221 kW. The top speed is an exciting 258 km/h and 100 kph are reached in 5.8 seconds. At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the Bavarian company will present the compact king as their Dark Edition with very special regalia and “Dark“ letterings on the C-pillar, trunk lid attachment and head rests.
The body kit comprises a front spoiler and front grille, headlight covers, side skirts, mirror caps and the afore-mentioned trunk lid attachment plus a rear skirt set. “Darkened“ rear lights complete the very ABTy kit. Four attractive stainless steel rear pipes underscore the muscular appearance. Needless to say that they are black-chrome-plated. The ABT CR wheel with its five dynamic pairs of spokes also fits the unusual, dark ABT GTI. Especially so, if they come in 20 inches and with 235/30 R20 tires.
“Our black ABT is really something and at the top once again“, CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt is full of praise. Its superiority this “über-Golf” also derives from its dynamic properties, made possible by the new sport-type stabilisers and especially the smart sport-type ABT height adjustable suspension kit. So the dark ABT Golf VII GTI Dark Edition is in reality a beacon of light!

ABT Power for the screen – the ABT PERFORMANCE SYSTEM
An ABT Power New Generation upgrade can be felt when revving up. Otherwise, this innovative system with its separate ABT Engine Control unit and its specially geared software stays hidden. A collaboration between Zenec, the leading In-Car-Entertainment and GPS specialist, and ABT Sportsline, market leader when it comes to tuning cars produced by the Volkswagen Group, is now supposed to change that. The key here is a graphic user interface visualising a number of status information bits and making for a permanent “ABT Power on board“ awareness.
“What percentage of the uprating is currently being used? What is the turbo pressure? What is the oil temperature and G-force? Whoever has an ABT Power New Generation car should also get this information when they do not go to the limit,“ says CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt: “And it should be possible to track the before-and-after effect. That prevents habituation and makes for more permanent fun.“ The new device, called ABT Performance System, thus also features a password-protected “ABT Power on and off“ function. A practical side effect: if you lend the car to an inexperienced driver like your son or daughter, the engine can be downrated to its serial performance values.
And that is how the new ABT visualisation actually looks: the Zenec specialists are known for their entertainment and GPS solutions that they gear to the different cars, also in visual and functional terms. A newly developed interface, the so-called ABT Gateway, connects the respective Zenec multimedia device and the various ABT components. Probably in Q3/2014, there will first be an integration of the ABT Engine Control units. One year later, we might see the exhaust valve control unit and ABT Level Control unit solutions. Alternatively to an application and play-back on the car moniceiver, an app is also being planned. Some other ABT Performance System options are currently being considered.

Wow-white SUV spectacle: 410 hp in the ABT RS Q3
Crossover alternatives to compact rockets like a Golf R or Audi S3 had been a rarity until in 2013 the racy Audi RS Q3 with its 310 hp/228 kW was rolled out. The ABT Sportsline engineers then saw even more potential in this chic car and wanted to put it on an equal footing with real sports cars. Extensive tests on their own dynamometer and public roads followed and showed that the 2.5l five-cylinder engine would easily bear a permanent 32 % uprating, provided the engineers were careful. Now, the ABT RS Q3 has 410 hp or 301 kW; the maximum torque is 530 Nm, up from a serial 420 Nm. In Geneva, ABT will present the power-SUV in an “innocent” white shade with an impressive decor which will then make this colour lose its innocence right away.
All this was achieved by ABT Power New Generation. “This complex and gentle processes uses a specially developed control unit – ABT Engine Control – and a customised software,“ says Hans-Jürgen Abt, CEO of the globally largest tuner of Volkswagen and Audi cars. But its superiority this SUV does not only get from its engine power but also from a height-adjustable sport-type suspension that provides a maximum of road feedback and dynamism.
And with regard to prestigious overtaking, ABT has also promoted the RS Q3 to the top league. Driver in front of you in their rearview mirror will always see a car that is sufficiently different from the serial version, rendered so by the new front skirt and grille. And a sporty decor set and 21-inch ABT DR alloy wheels look “fast”, too. Once it is in the lead, this speedy Bavarian is gone. One should also not forget the ABT rear skirt set including a stainless-steel exhaust system and four tail pipes – a much more dynamic look than provided by the single serial pipe.
