SUMMARY:
Nissan (Nissan North America, Inc.) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Nissan Versa vehicles manufactured May 8, 2006, to November 12, 2012, that were sold or ever registered in the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Road salt may corrode the front coil springs, possibly resulting in the coil springs fracturing.
CONSEQUENCE:
If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front coil springs, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by mid-November 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan Statement:
Nissan is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Versa vehicles in Canada and specific regions of the United States to replace both front coil springs. Due to a manufacturing process variation at a supplier that has since been corrected, certain Versas may contain front coil springs with insufficient anti-corrosion coating. As a result, corrosion could occur over time, which could in extreme cases lead to the fracture of the coil spring and potential damage to the front tire.
Nissan will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles in November, asking them to bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer to have both front springs replaced at no cost to the vehicle’s owner for parts and labor related to the recall repairs. Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction and is working with its dealers to provide an outstanding ownership experience to Nissan Versa owners.

Recall Details
On certain vehicles, the front suspension coil springs may have been manufactured with an inadequate phosphorous coating, and/or could have low residual stress in the springs. This inadequate coating could lead to cracking due to coil-to-coil contact when the spring is compressed, which would allow the spring to be more susceptible to corrosion. In some instances coil spring breakage could occur. If ignored, broken front coil spring could damage the front tires and cause rapid air loss and/or tire failure, which could affect the driver’s ability to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace both front coil springs.
