Two world premieres and three European premieres in Geneva

Dynamism and efficiency

Geneva/Stuttgart. The beating pulse of a new generation: the centrepiece of Mercedes-Benz’s appearance at the Geneva Motor Show (8 to 18 March 2012) will be the world premiere of the new A-Class, the sporty Mercedes in the compact segment. Also totally new is the SL 63 AMG, offering high performance par excellence. The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID – the world’s most fuel-efficient model in the luxury segment – will be on show for the first time in Europe, as will the lightweight, athletic and luxurious SL‑Class and the ML 63 AMG. The SLK 55 AMG will be appearing for the first time in Switzerland. The C-Class Sport offers a new dimension in sportiness, while the C 180 and E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition are shining beacons of efficiency. The CL “Grand Edition” stands for the ultimate in elegant luxury.

With the A-Class, Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in the compact segment: emphatically emotional in design, dynamic, with engines rated from 80 kW (109 hp) to 155 kW (211 hp), highly efficient with emission values as low as 99 g CO2/km. The A-Class is a clear statement on the dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand. At the same time, it also highlights the fact that safety is not a matter of price at Mercedes-Benz – with standard-fit features including the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST radar-based assistance system. The new A-Class (length/width/height: 4292/1780/1433 millimetres) will be making its way to European dealers in September 2012.

“A stands for ‘attack’: the A-Class is a clear statement on the new dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “It is new down to the last detail. Such an opportunity to begin with a blank sheet is rare in the field of car development. Our engineers and designers have seized this opportunity in convincing style.”

The design of the A-Class: emotional with a very sporty character

The design credentials and dynamism of the new A-Class are immediately apparent at first glance as it crouches up to 18 centimetres lower on the road than its predecessor. The design idiom presented with the “Concept A-CLASS” has been adopted wholeheartedly in the series production vehicle: with a new interpretation of the classic two-box design, the Mercedes designers have created an emotional exterior with a very sporty character. ” Applying the new dynamic style of Mercedes-Benz to the compact class was a challenge that we thoroughly enjoyed”,” relates Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz. “The sculptural aspect of the A-Class design is typically Mercedes. The feature lines on the sides in particular lend the A-Class structure and a welcome edginess.”

The aim in designing the interior was to complement the exterior’s sporty appearance. The interior additionally derives a quality feel which is unique in the compact segment from the design idiom, the selection of high-quality materials and the available combinations of materials. And as with the Concept A-CLASS, a smartphone can be fully integrated into the control and display system. A dedicated app allows full use of the functions offered by the iPhone®, with other smartphones to follow in the future.

All trim surfaces feature an electroplated finish in “silver shadow”, giving them a genuine metallic surface with “cool touch” effect. “This is just one example of the way in which the quality of the A-Class’s interior is not defined by classic trim elements but by consistent design and by the specific materials used”, explains Hartmut Sinkwitz, Head of Interior Design. “The motto we used when designing the interior was ‘pure sportiness, newly interpreted’.”

Sporty exclusivity: the Sport edition redefines dynamic performance

The performance specialists from AMG were involved for the first time at an early stage of the development process for the compact car. This involvement has spawned the model line’s most dynamic version – the A-Class Sport Edition engineered by AMG, whose looks reveal a particularly close affinity to the Concept A-CLASS – by virtue of the new diamond grille, for example.

The drive: new engines for petrol and diesel fuel

A broad range of petrol and diesel engines covers all power requirements while defining a new benchmark in efficiency: for the first time ever, a Mercedes-Benz will emit only 99 g of CO2 per kilometre.

The new generation of petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres covers an output spectrum ranging from 90 kW (115 hp) in the A 180 through 115 kW (156 hp) in the A 200 to 155 kW (211 hp) in the A 250. Features common to all these engines are the combination of direct injection with exhaust-gas turbocharging, an enhanced combustion process and extended stratification ranges for lean-burn operation by means of fast-acting injectors for multiple fuel injections and multiple ignition according to the prevailing requirements. The 1.6-litre engine features the world premiere of the innovative CAMTRONIC system. As a result of adjustment of the valve lift at the intake end the quantity of fresh gas is limited in the partial load range, reducing fuel consumption.

The diesel engines also boast extreme efficiency and environmental friendliness, thanks to state-of-the-art injection technology and turbocharging. The A 180 CDI kicks off at 80 kW (109 hp) and offers maximum torque of up to 250 Nm, while in the A 200 CDI the maximum power output stands at 100 kW (136 hp), accompanied by maximum torque of 300 Nm. The A 220 CDI has a displacement of 2.2 litres and generates 125 kW (170 hp) of power and 350 Nm of torque, enabling outstanding performance in the A-Class.

All engines of the new A-Class feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines can be combined with the new six-speed manual transmission or optionally with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.

Other highlights: chassis and suspension, aerodynamics, safety

The chassis realises the dynamism which is promised by the design and the drive technology. The substantially lowered centre of gravity and the new four-link rear axe provide the basis for the effective transmission of power to the road and for the potential deployment of 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The customer has a choice of various chassis and suspension set-ups, including the optional sports suspension with Direct-Steer system. The electromechanical steering of the A-Class has been redesigned. The electric motor of the servo assistance system is now located in space-saving configuration directly on the steering gear as a high-precision dual pinion EPS system.

The perfect aerodynamics of the A-Class grant it a Cd value of 0.26 – a new benchmark in its class. The standard-fit roof spoiler concealing all the aerials on board the A-Class is also a contributory factor here.

The A-Class is the only car in its segment to feature a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist as standard, which lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system gives a visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response. This is initiated as soon as the driver emphatically operates the brake pedal.

The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system is available for the first time in the A-Class. This marks the debut in the compact class of this innovation which was premiered in the S-Class back in 2002.

E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID: the world’s most fuel-efficient luxury-class model

The new E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is all set for its market launch with record efficiency values of 4.2 l diesel/100 km and 109 g CO2/km, accompanied by increased torque and power output. Its modular hybrid concept with lithium‑ion battery does not impose any compromises on space and offers an impressive driving experience thanks to start/stop, recuperation, boost effect, all-electric driving and sailing. The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the world’s most fuel-efficient model in the luxury segment.

Mercedes-Benz is setting new standards for luxury-class business vehicles: the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, which is available as a saloon and an estate, boasts truly impressive performance. Its 4-cylinder diesel engine generates 150 kW (204 hp) of power and 500 Nm of torque. The diesel engine combines with an electric motor rated at 20 kW and 250 Nm to produce a harmonious overall concept.

The new SL-Class: light, athletic, luxurious

The all-new SL sees Mercedes-Benz continuing a tradition that began 60 years ago, since when “SL” has always stood for a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and for trailblazing innovations. The SL consists almost entirely of aluminium for the first time and weighs in at up to 140 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The highly rigid all-aluminium body-in-white provides the basis for emphatically sportier, agile handling accompanied by exemplary ride and driving comfort.

New BlueDIRECT engines provide for enhanced driving dynamics; they are more powerful and at the same time up to 29 percent more fuel-efficient than the previous generation of engines. Totally new features are the Frontbass system, a world-first that transforms the luxury sports car into a concert hall irrespective of whether the top is up or down, and the MAGIC VISION CONTROL adaptive wiper/washer system, which applies water to the windscreen from the wiper blade in the required quantities and according to the wiping direction.

SL 63 AMG: high-performance roadster

The latest version of the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG high-performance roadster impresses on several counts: systematic lightweight construction, increased output and enhanced driving dynamics, all combined with a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminium bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar, the vehicle has shed 125 kilograms. With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model boasts the perfect ingredients for unparalleled dynamism and a sublime driving experience that is truly unique.

A further boost in performance comes courtesy of a winning combination: a further improved AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance compound braking system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. An enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high level of safety.

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The SL 63 AMG is built around a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar. Compared to the outgoing model, this design not only delivers a weight reduction of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional boot lid.

SLK 55 AMG: top figures in all disciplines

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG is the most powerful SLK of all time. Its newly developed naturally aspirated AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system combines ultimate performance with minimised fuel consumption. With a maximum output of 310 kW (422 hp) and peak torque of 540 Newton metres, the SLK 55 AMG outperforms all of its direct competitors. The SLK 55 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Its fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre are some 30 percent lower than the figures for its predecessor.

ML 63 AMG: efficiency and superlative performance

The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG stands for efficiency and performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience. Burning 11.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined, 276 g CO2/km), the high-performance SUV undercuts its predecessor by 28 percent. The basis for the low fuel consumption and top-class performance is provided by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine. The eight-cylinder unit extracts a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Newton metres of torque from its displacement of 5461 cc. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package, these figures rise to 410 kW (557 hp) and 760 Newton metres. Both variants of the ML 63 AMG deliver sports car-like performance: the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively, while top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

C-Class Sport: the C-Class has never been sportier

Mercedes-Benz is sharpening the profile of the C-Class: with the new “Sport” Coupé models developed with AMG and the new “AMG Plus Sports package”, there has never been a wider choice of sporty versions. The new models are available from June 2012. The AMG Plus Sports package can be combined with all body and engine variants.

The name says it all – the new coupé models C 250 Sport and C 250 CDI Sport are decidedly dynamic, as the performance specialists at AMG were heavily involved in their development. In addition to the visually enhanced AMG Plus Sports package, both models have technical features which further increase driving enjoyment. Cornering and handling characteristics are more dynamic thanks to an AMG sports suspension, more direct speed-sensitive sports steering, a sports exhaust system and a more sporty transmission configuration in S and M mode. The matt paint finish “designo magno platinum” is exclusively available for the Sport models.

C 180, E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition: shining beacons of efficiency

Presenting the most economical E-Class diesel and C-Class petrol models to date: with fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and emissions of 119 g CO2/km for the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition and 5.8 litres/100 km and 136 g CO2/km for the new C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is giving an impressive demonstration of just how much potential is still left in the internal-combustion engine. Take the C-Class, for instance: since its predecessor was launched in 2000, the output of the C 180 has increased by 21 percent, whilst consumption has been reduced by 37 percent. The present version of the C-Class is nearly twice as efficient as its predecessor.

The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition that is available from March 2012 is simply one of the most economical cars in its segment. Thanks to a bundle of efficiency-boosting measures, including an Aerodynamics package, electric power steering (EPS), a longer final-drive ratio and size 205/55 R 16 tyres with low rolling resistance, the model emits just 119 g CO2/km – ten grams or nearly eight percent less than before and equates to 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 km. The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition has an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol unit is the brand new entry-level engine for the C-Class. With fuel consumption of 5.8 l/100 km and a CO2 figure of 136 g/km, the improvement compared to the previous C 180 when similarly equipped is as much as 21 g/km, or just under 1 l/100 km. This makes the C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY one of the very first petrol models to be ranked in energy efficiency class B. The 115 kW (156 hp) engine is very light when compared to its competitors and delivers impressive agility from standstill – peak torque of 250 Nm is on tap from just 1250 rpm all the way up to 4000 rpm.

CL “Grand Edition”: exclusive luxury

The exclusive “Grand Edition” of the CL from Mercedes-Benz features attractive exterior paint finishes and more exclusive interior appointments. The range of paint finishes offers a choice between designo platinum black metallic, designo magno cashmere white and designo mocha black. The exclusive appearance is rounded off by 20-inch light-alloy wheels. Inside, the “Grand Edition” offers single-tone aniline leather in porcelain, armagnac or deep black. The “Grand Edition” is available as a CL 500, CL 500 4MATIC and CL 600.

Viano PEARL Limited Edition: exclusive touring van

The vision presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show has now become reality in the form of the Viano PEARL touring van, which indulges its occupants with the finest materials. The front seats and the four individual seats in the rear are upholstered in finest two-tone nappa leather, for example, and the rear boasts a real walnut floor. The electrochromatic glass of the rear side windows can be darkened at the touch of a button. A “BeoSound Viano” sound system from Bang & Olufsen, produced and tuned specifically for the Viano PEARL Limited Edition, provides for superior on-board audio quality. There is a choice of two powerful V6 engines – a diesel rated at 165 kW (224 hp) and a petrol version rated at 190 kW (258 hp).

Vito E-CELL crewbus: first seven-seater with electric drive

The Vito E-CELL crewbus is the first seven-seater vehicle worldwide to offer local emission-free mobility ex-factory as standard. With its range of around 130 km it is ideal for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as pedestrian zones, city centres or health resorts. The electric motor (60 kW, 280 Nm), power electronics, transformer and AC/DC charger are accommodated under the bonnet. The generated power is transmitted to the front wheels. The new model does not force passengers to compromise in terms of spaciousness, either in the interior or in the luggage compartment. The intelligent, modular hybrid concept represents a comprehensive enhancement of the S 400 HYBRID – the clear market leader in its segment: no body modifications are necessary, the hybrid module is flexible and also suitable for deployment in other model series. All this comes at only a moderate price increase of € 3570. In Germany the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID costs € 51,794.75 as a saloon, while the estate model retails at € 55,007.75 (in each case incl. 19% VAT). Both models are to be launched in June 2012.

The philosophy: enhanced efficiency without compromising on comfort or benefits

The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID forms part of the brand’s intelligent downsizing strategy, which involves making conventional models far more efficient than previously – without sacrificing driveability or comfort. Here the in-house engineers have their sights set on exemplary consumption figures in everyday traffic rather than on standard or NEDC combined consumption, for instance. The familiar “Real Life Safety” philosophy, which focuses on safety benefits under real-life conditions rather than standardised crash-test results, is augmented by “Real Life Efficiency”.

On the road, therefore, the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is easily a match for the E 300 CDI (170 kW/540 Nm), yet it boasts around 35-percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In terms of vehicle weight, too, the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is on a par with the E 300 CDI.

At the same time, hybridisation enhances ride comfort: the car starts and moves off in virtual silence, while the hybrid module also damps any internal combustion engine vibrations. What’s more, complete climate control is available even in start/stop mode.

Coasting along the motorway

Mercedes-Benz hybrid technology offers a wealth of extra functions that enhance both comfort and efficiency as well as helping to deliver a special driving experience underpinned by accomplished sportiness:

  • When the car is stationary – ECO start/stop: the internal combustion engine switches off when coasting at speeds up to 160 km/h, since ancillaries such as the steering, brakes and refrigerant compressor operate electrically. It is restarted quickly, smoothly and virtually silently.
  • Manoeuvring: in most cases, the car uses electric power alone for manoeuvring and parking.
  • Accelerating: electrical power alone is used for moving off and driving under low load. Acceleration from standstill is particularly powerful, since the electric motor’s full torque of up to 250 Nm is available instantaneously.
  • Boost function: the electric motor supports the combustion engine during acceleration, e.g. in the course of overtaking.
  • Cruising: when the car is being driven at a constant speed, the engine control unit shifts the operating points towards exceptionally low specific fuel consumption levels.
  • Sailing: “sailing”, as it has come to be known, is possible at speeds below 160 km/h. The combustion engine shuts down and the desired speed is maintained by the electric‑motor alone until the battery needs recharging.
  • Kinetic energy recuperationwhen coasting or braking: when the car is coasting (decelerating), the electric motor acts as a generator. When the brake pedal is pressed, the generator output is initially increased proportionally for greater deceleration. Only when increased brake pressure is applied are the wheel brakes additionally deployed.
    • Information: an additional savings effect arises after a relatively short period of time, as drivers come to apply the above-stated functions in an increasingly more purposeful and effective manner. They are supported here by the display concept in the hybrid models – the central display provides information on the current energy flow and the charge status of the battery.


The hybrid module: a compact and intelligently integrated powerhouse

The hybrid drive unit is a further development of the module from the S 400 HYBRID and is based on the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. Distinguishing features include the omission of the hydraulic torque converter and the addition of a wet clutch of the kind also found in the high-performance AMG models. Consequently, the electric motor can be integrated in the transmission unit in such a way that it takes up only marginally more space than the 7G-TRONIC (+65 mm). The omission of the converter allows all-electric motoring as well as “sailing”, thus significantly boosting the potential to reduce fuel consumption.

The compact electric motor, which is installed in space-saving configuration in the clutch housing between engine and transmission, is a 3-‑phase AC internal rotor magneto motor which generates a maximum output of 20 kW and peak torque of 250 Newton metres at an operating voltage of 120 volts.

The components: perfectly integrated into the vehicle

The hybrid drive’s electrical energy is provided by the high-voltage lithium-ion battery specially developed for use in vehicles. Its key characteristics include an output of 19 kW and an energy content of 0.8 kWh, allowing the E-Class to run on electric power alone at up to 35 km/h and for up to one kilometre. Space-saving installation of the drive in the engine compartment in place of the conventional starter battery means that the generous interior dimensions and the luggage compartment capacity remain unchanged. In addition to serving as an energy accumulator for the electric motor, the lithium-ion battery is also connected via the voltage converter to the 12V on-board electrical system, which supplies power to standard power-consuming devices such as the headlamps and the comfort features.

Sophisticated packaging means that numerous hybrid-specific components such as the high-performance electronics in the engine compartment can be integrated directly with the internal combustion engine, thus neatly rounding off the modularity concept: the hybrid models can be produced on the same assembly line as their conventional counterparts without needing to be diverted elsewhere. Another advantage of the overall concept is the scalability and compatibility with other vehicles and engines.

Safety: on a par with previous models

Intelligent integration of the hybrid systems without the need for changes to the body has the practical benefit of not restricting spaciousness in any way as well as ensuring that all hybrid models boast exactly the same high level of safety as their counterparts with an internal combustion engine – a very important aspect for Mercedes-Benz. Accident behaviour has been successfully tested crash simulations and tests.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL

Lightweight, athletic, luxurious

Geneva/Stuttgart. With the completely redeveloped SL, Mercedes-Benz continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. The letters “SL” have ever since been synonymous with a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and with groundbreaking innovations. The new SL has been produced for the first time almost entirely from aluminium and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and ride comfort. Even better driving dynamics come courtesy of the new BlueDIRECT engines; they are more powerful yet at the same time up to 29 percent more economical than the engines in the outgoing generation. Other new features include the unique FrontBass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a concert hall regardless of whether the top is open or closed, and the highly efficient adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL; it supplies water from the wiper blade as required and depending on the direction of wipe.

Compared with its successful predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz SL offers considerably more comfort and sportiness, setting new standards in the luxury roadster class. Added to which is uncompromising day-to-day suitability, which turns the SL into an incomparable all-rounder among sports cars. In short, anyone that talks about the new SL is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring.

Lighter and more rigid: sophisticated all-aluminium bodyshell

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters “SL” – super, lightweight – literally. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most outstanding design characteristics in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. For the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components consist of other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the cover behind the tank. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The new aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than it would using the steel technology from the predecessor. “The effect is rather as if a heavyweight-class passenger had got out of the car” says Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz. “The result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases, the environmental burden sinks.”

The aluminium structure is not only lighter but also proves superior to the predecessor’s steel construction in terms of rigidity, safety and comfort. This is achieved thanks, among other things, to its intelligent lightweight construction with components optimised for their specific task. Thus, diverse processes are used to make different kinds of aluminium depending on the use the component is to be given: the parts are made by chill casting or vacuum die-casting, worked into extruded aluminium sections or into aluminium panels of different thicknesses. The result: high rigidity, high safety levels and better vibration characteristics.

Although the new SL is even more comfortable and has more assistance systems on-board than its predecessor and therefore does actually sacrifice some of the weight saved through the aluminium bodyshell, the scales show some astonishing figures: the new SL 500 (1.785 kg) weighs around 125 kilograms less than its predecessor. On balance, the SL 350 (1.685 kg) is even 140 kilograms lighter – all thanks to a host of other intelligent enhanced details to reduce weight, which Mercedes-Benz has also implemented in the new SL in addition to the aluminium bodyshell.

Driving pleasure: frugal, powerful engines and agile suspension

Powerful while accelerating, effortlessly superior across all speeds, nimble on winding roads – the new SL provides ample driving pleasure. Apart from the powerful engines, the sportily tuned yet comfortable suspension, which also boasts intelligent lightweight construction, proves outstanding. For instance, the steering knuckles and spring links on the front axle are also made out of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. The same also applies to virtually all the wheel location components on the rear axle.

The new SL is available with two different suspension systems: the SL features semi-active adjustable damping as standard. The optional active suspension system ABC (Active Body Control) is available as an alternative.

Both suspension variants are combined with a new electromechanical Direct-Steer system featuring speed-sensitive power steering and a ratio that can be varied across the steering wheel angle. This ensures excellent straight-line stability and, therefore, a high degree of assuredness when travelling at motorway speeds and makes the SL very agile. It also reduces the amount of steering required when parking and manoeuvring.

The new V8 in the SL 500 develops 320 kW (435 hp) from its displacement of 4663 cc and thus around 12 percent more than its predecessor despite some 0.8 litres less displacement. The fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 22 percent. At the same time, the torque has increased from 530 Nm to 700 Nm – a gain of 32 percent. Although the displacement remains the same at 3499 cc, the new V6 engine in the new SL 350 develops 225 kW (306 hp) and delivers 370 Nm of torque. It uses just 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor. Both engine variants come with a standard-fit ECO start/stop function. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which has been optimised in relation to fuel consumption and comfort, also contributes to the exemplary, low fuel consumption. The fuel economy of the BlueDIRECT engines takes nothing away from the roadster’s raciness. Quite the contrary: the SL 350 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, making it three tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The SL 500 takes just 4.6 seconds – eight tenths less than the previous SL 500.

Interior: aesthetic, stylish, sporty

The new SL combines its aesthetically honed profile, which follows the Mercedes-Benz tradition, with a luxurious feel. Fine materials, perfectly finished with great attention to detail, distinguish the style and character of the interior.

Compared with its predecessor, the new generation of the SL is much longer 4612 mm (+50 mm) and wider 1877 mm (+57 mm), providing more room for more comfort in the interior, too. Shoulder room (+37 mm) and elbow room (+28 mm) have been increased, exceeding the dimensions normally found in this vehicle class. Clear lines create a formally coherent internal space within this comfortable interior. Generously used wood trim extends from the centre console across the dashboard into the doors, creating a pleasant wrap-around effect. Three types of wood along with two different aluminium trim finishes are available. Perfectly in tune with the roadster’s character, it combines the unpretentious atmosphere of a high-performance sports car with a comfortable, stylish ambience one comes to expect in a luxurious touring car.

Design: classic SL proportions

The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasise the SL legend.

An upright classic sports car radiator grille clearly marks out the new SL visually as a prestigious member of the current Mercedes-Benz sports car family. The centrally positioned star is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous trademark, which now extends into the centre section with its organically flowing contours.

Dynamically slanting headlamps set well to the outside flank the striking front end and give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). With five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions, and are activated depending on the driving situation, they offer the driver a much better illuminated field of vision. The striking sidelights and the horizontal strip of the daytime running lamps in the far ends of the bumper feature LED technology.

 

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option

The sixth generation of the SL also offers a vario-roof that can be retracted into the boot using an electrohydraulic mechanism to save space, which converts the SL in a few seconds into a roadster or a coupé, depending on the driver’s wishes and the weather. Unlike its predecessor, three versions are available for the new SL: painted, with glass roof or with the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The transparent roof switches to light or dark at the push of a button. When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up in bright sunlight. The frame of the three roof versions is made of magnesium, making the roofs around six kilograms lighter than the roof on the predecessor, thus providing a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and, in turn, better agility.

The engineers have refined the operating mechanism for the roof and boot lid. It now takes less than 20 seconds to open or close the roof completely.

Aerodynamics: new standards

The design of the new SL not only meets high aesthetic demands but it also boasts exemplary aerodynamic qualities.

As such, the roadster merits best marks in its segment in four important disciplines:

  • With the lowest drag coefficient (cd = 0.27 in the SL 350);
  • With the lowest wind noise that is virtually on a par with a closed saloon;
  • With the best comfort for open-top motoring so that you can still have the roof down even at high speed;
  • With virtually no accumulation of dirt on the side windows.

Two world premieres: FrontBass and MAGIC VISION CONTROL

With two innovations, the new SL remains true to its tradition as technological trendsetter:

  • MAGIC VISION CONTROL is a new, intelligent and highly efficient wipe/wash system. The innovative wiper blade concept always applies the washer fluid just in front of the wiper blade lip via the channels integrated into the blade – in both directions of wipe. As a result, no water is splashed onto the windscreen during spraying to disrupt the driver’s visibility, while at the same time cleaning the windscreen perfectly. The water also remains on the windscreen, thus ensuring it is cleaned without troubling the occupants, even with the roof down. For the first time a fully heated wiper blade is available as an option that prevents snow or ice from forming on the blade in winter. This heating function also allows warm water to be applied directly onto the windscreen for the first time, even in cold temperatures.
  • The likewise unique FrontBass system intelligently uses the free spaces in the aluminium structures in front of the footwell as resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers. As a result the new SL features clear, crisp bass sounds that make possible a concert hall ambience even with the top down, and frees up space in the doors.

Both innovations are part of the extensive standard equipment of the new SL.

HANDS-FREE ACCESS: ‘kick’ to open

The HANDS-FREE ACCESS system is another Mercedes-Benz innovation which provides hands-free, contactless operation of the boot lid. The driver simply moves their foot in the vicinity of the rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz is the only car maker to offer a system which not only automatically opens the boot lid but closes it as well.

The safest roadster

Thanks to the crash-optimised aluminium structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE® and assistance systems on the same high level as the S-Class, the SL is the world’s safest roadster. The rigid aluminium bodyshell forms a sturdy passenger compartment along with precisely defined deformation zones in the front and rear ends. In the event of the vehicle overturning, A-pillars made out of a mix of steel and aluminium and two roll-over bars protect the passenger compartment. The restraint systems including the two-stage driver and front passenger airbags have been further developed. A headbag integrally covers the side head-impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the seat backrest can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Another new feature is the crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints developed by Mercedes-Benz which are fitted as standard in the SL.

An active bonnet and a front end with a large, yielding impact area help ensure pedestrian protection.

A safety highlight is the unrivalled anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® developed by Mercedes-Benz which is fitted as standard. If the system detects a serious risk of an accident, it reflexively activates precautionary protective measures for the vehicle occupants, so that the seat belts and airbags are able to fulfil their protective function to the full during an impact.

Additional post-crash measures supplement the integral safety concept and facilitate rapid assistance: regardless of the severity of the impact, the doors can be automatically unlocked after an accident, the interior lighting activated and the side windows lowered by 50 millimetres to ventilate the interior more effectively. The steering wheel can also be moved upwards.

Standard: ATTENTION ASSIST AND ADAPTIVE BRAKE

In the new SL too, a unique combination of driver assistance systems helps prevent accidents. These include the standard-fit drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST and the ADAPTIVE BRAKE. The latter features ABS, acceleration skid control (ASR) and active yaw control, and offers comfort and convenience functions in addition to safety functions.

The ADAPTIVE BRAKE works in conjunction with the equally adaptive brake lights. In emergency braking situations, it warns vehicles behind with flashing brake lights.

PRE-SAFE® Brake: autonomous partial and emergency braking in response to a serious risk of a rear-end collision

As an option DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and PRE-SAFE® Brake, which is already well proven in other Mercedes-Benz models, are available. Both work on the basis of the same radar sensors. Once a serious risk of a rear-end collision is detected, the PRE-SAFE® Brake warns the driver initially and can initiate autonomous braking if the driver fails to react, and so either prevent the accident or at least mitigate its severity. PRE-SAFE® can also activate occupant protection measures.


Active Parking Assist: automatically manoeuvred into a parking space

The Active Parking Assist is new in the SL. Using ultrasound sensors it can identify parking spaces and automatically steer the vehicle into the space while parking.

Infotainment: COMAND with internet access

Even in the entry-level variant, the new Mercedes-Benz SL comes with the “Cockpit Management and Data System” COMAND. Functionality includes Bluetooth telephony along with simpler operation of the car phone. COMAND Online with internet access and DVD changer is also available as an option. It provides unlimited web browsing while the vehicle is stationary along with high-speed access to a Mercedes-Benz online service – for instance requesting a weather report or a special destination search. There is also the option of sending individual destinations and routes via Google Maps to the vehicle. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is also offering new apps for the new SL: in addition to a free news app and a Facebook app, there are optional Mercedes-Benz apps for share prices and a car park finder. A Yelp app to look for restaurants is available for the US market.

Both COMAND versions feature a high-resolution TFT colour display with 17.8 cm diagonal (800 x 480 pixels) at the side next to the instrument cluster. This screen arrangement prevents the driver from being distracted as far as possible.

The designo crystal silver magno special paintwork is available exclusively for the “Edition 1”, along with trim in wave or deep white aluminium. Depending on the basic model, the extra charge is between 19,028.10 euros and 22,598.10 euros.

SL 63 AMG, SLK 55 AMG and ML 63 AMG

High performance to the power of three

Mercedes-AMG GmbH is offering three new high-performance cars that cater to a broad spectrum of requirements in the shape of the SL 63 AMG, SLK 55 AMG and ML 63 AMG. The two prestigious eight-cylinder roadster models and the mighty SUV distinguish themselves with efficient drive systems, breathtakingly dynamic performance and emotion-charged design.

 

The stage is set for the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. The latest version of the high-performance roadster impresses on several counts: systematic lightweight construction, increased output and enhanced driving dynamics, all combined with a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminium bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar, the vehicle has shed 125 kilograms. With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model boasts the perfect ingredients for unparalleled dynamism and a sublime driving experience that is truly unique.

 

A further boost in performance comes courtesy of a winning combination: a further improved AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance compound braking system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. An enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high level of safety.

Supreme performance and high efficiency: the SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power ratings for the first time. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 800 Newton metres of torque. If the AMG Performance package is specified, drivers will have 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Newton metres at their disposal – more power than any other competitor in this segment. The result is phenomenal performance, as underlined by the acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds respectively. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although this increases to 300 km/h (likewise electronically limited) with the AMG Performance package on board. NEDC combined consumption comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres for both power ratings – a full 4.2 litres or 30 percent less than for the outgoing model.

The eight-cylinder powerplant with the abbreviation M157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output and scintillating power delivery on the one hand and remarkably low fuel consumption on the other. Besides spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine features an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water intercooling, generator management and an ECO start/stop function. The weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust system with two sets of chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive soundtrack.

Intelligent lightweight construction with aluminium bodyshell and carbon fibre

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The SL 63 AMG is built around a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar. Compared to the outgoing model, this design not only delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional boot lid.


AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The lightweight design measures are not just limited to the body of the SL 63 AMG, however, as the steering knuckles and spring links on the four-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension’s wheel location components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response characteristics of the spring-and-damper units.

 

Mercedes-AMG has retained the ABC active suspension and damper system: the new SL 63 AMG is equipped as standard with the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, but in a further improved version. Exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping (“Sport”) or a more comfort-oriented setting for a high level of comfort on long journeys (“Comfort”) can be selected at the push of a button. This together with the new electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering endows the flagship AMG model with fleet-footed, agile cornering and exceptional feedback at the limits of performance. The steering has a constant, more direct ratio, together with variable power assistance that adjusts depending on the suspension setting.

Power transmission can likewise be adapted to specific requirements, as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual). In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stopped. Meanwhile, the RACE START function allows lightning quick acceleration from a standing start.

The brakes are designed to deliver maximum performance too: besides the newly developed AMG high-performance composite braking system, there is also the alternative of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system familiar from the SLS AMG. The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and shod with tyres size 255/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear. AMG multi-spoke forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres help to reduce the unsprung masses. They are also available in matt black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish.

Design: stylish, supreme, dynamic

The SL 63 AMG is the latest addition to the AMG roadster family and displays the hallmark styling elements of a supreme high-performance car from Affalterbach: the dynamic, distinctive AMG bodystyling comprises the front apron with large cooling air intakes, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. Among the particularly eye-catching features are the new AMG radiator grille with a double louvre in silver chrome, the side sill panels and the “V8 BITURBO” logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, the AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

The SL 63 AMG interior is likewise inspired by the SLS AMG and offers a feast for all the senses: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the supercar’s styling. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in single-tone or two-tone nappa leather with their own V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating, as well as AMG carbon-fibre trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG Performance steering wheel is the AMG logo in the lower metal insert. The sportily designed AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information with its TFT colour monitor, AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-calibre workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

SLK 55 AMG: top figures in all disciplines

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG is the most powerful SLK of all time. Its newly developed naturally aspirated AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system combines ultimate performance with minimised fuel consumption. With a maximum output of 310 kW (422 hp) and peak torque of 540 Newton metres, the SLK 55 AMG outperforms all of its direct competitors. The SLK 55 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Its fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre are some 30 percent lower than the figures for its predecessor.

Exclusive combination of advanced technologies

The high-tech M 152 powerpack enthrals with an unrivalled combination of advanced technologies. No other petrol engine features direct injection at a pressure of 200 bar, spray-guided combustion and piezoelectric injectors, all in conjunction with map-controlled cylinder shut-off, an all-aluminium crankcase honed using a special “spectacle” technique, four valves per cylinder with continuous camshaft adjustment, a high compression ratio of 12.6:1, ECO stop/start function and generator management – while revving to a maximum speed of over 7000 rpm. All of these measures result in an optimum efficiency factor, which is a precondition for high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions.

Borrowed from Formula 1: AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system

Engine efficiency is significantly improved in particular by the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system that has been newly developed by Mercedes-AMG: under partial load conditions, cylinders two, three, five and eight are shut off, resulting in considerable fuel savings. This technology is employed in similar form in the approx. 750 hp V8 engines used in Formula 1. The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode “C” – Controlled Efficiency. The ECO start/stop function and generator management further contribute to the low fuel consumption figures. For the first time, AMG is using a sports exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap on each side. This technology resolves the conflict of objectives between producing an emotion-stirring sound when driving in a sporty manner and a more discreet engine tone in the partial load range.

Perfect combination: highly dynamic driving and pleasurable cruising

The AMG sports suspension with Torque Vectoring Brakes and AMG Direct-Steer system provides remarkable lateral dynamics and agile handling, together with the comfort on long journeys that Mercedes is renowned for. The AMG Direct-Steer system is the perfect complement to the Torque Vectoring Brakes: compared with standard steering, it enhances handling and agility while also reducing the effort required when parking.

AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, size 8 x 18 (front) and 9 x 18 (rear), are shod with 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 wide-base tyres respectively. Alternatively, customers have the choice of two further design variants from the AMG Performance Studio: AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in either a titanium grey or matt black finish. The AMG high-performance braking system stands out for its outstanding responsiveness, short stopping distances and excellent fade resistance.

The optionally available AMG Handling package injects the SLK 55 AMG with even greater sportiness. It comprises an AMG Performance suspension with stiffer tuning, an AMG rear-axle differential lock, composite brake discs at the front and a three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather with Alcantara® inserts in the grip areas.

Unmistakable: uniquely styled design and appointments

Classic roadster proportions with typical AMG design traits as well as a hint of SLS AMG – that’s how the SLK 55 AMG can be summed up visually. The new AMG front apron has large air intakes and AMG-specific LED‑daytime running lamps. Inspired by the SLS AMG supercar, the wide radiator grille features a large, centrally positioned Mercedes star. On the SLK 55 AMG, the louvres in the radiator grille and the front apron’s cross strut are painted in a high-gloss black finish. Headlamps with dark edging and darkened tail lights also come as standard on the top-of-the-range V8 model. Further styling highlights include the AMG rear apron with black diffuser insert, the AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes and the spoiler lip on the boot lid.

The interior design is likewise reminiscent of the SLS AMG Roadster: the four air vents in the style of jet engines evoke associations with the supercar, as does the centre console finished in brushed aluminium. The AMG Performance steering wheel, with its flattened top and bottom sections, also boasts metal trim, aluminium shift paddles and grip areas wrapped in perforated leather. The AMG sports seats with their individual seat upholstery layout come as standard with combined ARTICO man-made leather/black fabric upholstery and high-quality AMG badges in the backrests.

ML 63 AMG: efficiency and superlative performance

The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG stands for efficiency and performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience. Burning 11.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined, 276 g CO2/km), the high-performance SUV undercuts its predecessor by 28 percent. The basis for the low fuel consumption and top-class performance is provided by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, featuring spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezoelectric injectors, ECO start/stop system, an all-aluminium crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water intercooling and generator management. The eight-cylinder unit extracts a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Newton metres of torque from its displacement of 5461 cc. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package, these figures rise to 410 kW (557 hp) and 760 Newton metres. Both variants of the ML 63 AMG deliver sports car-like performance: the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively, while top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Efficient and variable: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

Power transmission to all four permanently driven wheels is handled by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission is fascinatingly versatile. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine whenever the vehicle is stopped.

As previously, Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40 : 60 in the interests of dynamic handling. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package – consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) – is combined for the first time with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body’s roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the system has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

The electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering varies the power assistance depending on the vehicle’s speed and also helps to save fuel. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance. The ML 63 AMG rides as standard on AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels measuring 9 x 20, painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with size 265/45 R 20 tyres. Tyres in 295/35 R 21 format on 10 x 21 AMG light-alloy wheels are optionally available.

Specific AMG bodystyling with trim in matt silver chrome

The design of the new ML 63 AMG exudes self-confidence, athleticism and power. Under the radiator grille with louvres painted in high-gloss black and the Mercedes star in the centre is a large cooling air intake. Fitted at the bottom of the AMG front apron is a trim strip in matt silver chrome, which lends the front a wider appearance while harmonising with the surrounds of the daytime running lamps in the side cooling air intakes. Another eye-catching feature is the AMG rear apron with its simulated black air outlet openings and trim strip in matt silver chrome. In contrast to the other M-Class variants, the ML 63 AMG features two sets of visible chromed twin tailpipes.


High-class, sporty interior

A sporty character and supreme quality define the interior of the high-performance SUV from AMG. This is embodied in the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats offering pronounced lateral support just as much as in the four-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel. The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching as well as AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats.

New C-Class models to be launched in June 2012

The C-Class has never been more sporty

Geneva/Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz is sharpening the profile of the C-Class: with the new coupé models “Sport”, developed together with AMG, and the new “AMG Plus Sports package”, there has never been a wider choice of sporty versions. These models are available from June 2012. The “AMG Plus Sports package” can be combined with all body and engine variants.

“Refined sportiness is a brand value we hold dear, and with the new Sport models we are shifting the emphasis of the C-Class a little more towards sportiness,” says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing. “This means that in the C-Class, alongside the top-of-the-range C 63 AMG, we have the widest ever line-up of sporty models.” In the future there will also be technically and visually upgraded Sport models in other model series, for example the new A-Class.

The name says it all – the new Coupé models C 250 Sport and C 250 CDI Sport are decidedly dynamic, as the performance specialists at AMG were heavily involved in their development. In addition to the visually enhanced AMG Plus Sports package, both models have technical features which further increase driving enjoyment. Cornering and handling characteristics are more dynamic thanks to an AMG sports suspension, more direct speed-sensitive sports steering, a sports exhaust system and a more sporty transmission configuration in S and M mode. The matt paint finish “designo magno platinum” is exclusively available for the Sport models.

The AMG Plus Sports package lends an even more sporty aura to the Coupé, Saloon and Estate. As additions to the AMG Sports package it includes AMG 7-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, an AMG spoiler lip and sports seats in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA. Red seat belts and red contrasting topstitching on the steering wheel, seats, door centre panels, door armrests, centre console and shift lever gaiter add further sporty touches.

C-Class Coupé Sport – engineered by AMG: technically and visually more dynamic

The two four-cylinder models, both with an output of 150 kW (204 hp), are available as “Sport” models from June 2012. In addition to the new AMG Plus Sports package and black exterior mirrors, they have the following technical features for even more driving enjoyment:

New engine for the C 180, optimised E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition

Beacons of efficiency

Geneva/Stuttgart. Presenting the most economical E-Class diesel and C‑Class petrol models to date: with a consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and 119 g CO2/km for the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition and 5.8 litres/100 km and 136 g CO2/km for the new C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is giving an impressive demonstration of just how much potential is still left in the internal-combustion engine. Take the C-Class, for instance: since its predecessor was launched in 2000, the output of the C 180 has increased by 21 percent, whilst consumption has been reduced by 37 percent. The present version of the C-Class is nearly twice as efficient as its predecessor.

The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition that is available from March 2012 is simply one of the most economical cars in its segment. Thanks to a bundle of efficiency-boosting measures, including an Aerodynamics package, electric power steering (EPS), a longer final-drive ratio and size 205/55 R 16 tyres with low rolling resistance, the model emits just 119 g CO2/km – that is ten grams or nearly eight percent less than before and equates to 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 km. The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition has an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol unit is the brand new entry-level engine for the C-Class. With fuel consumption of 5.8 l/100 km and a CO2 figure of 136 g/km, the improvement compared to the previous C 180 when similarly equipped is as much as 21 g/km, or just under 1 l/100 km. This makes the C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY one of the very first petrol models to be ranked in energy efficiency class B. The 115 kW (156 hp) engine is very light when compared to its competitors and delivers impressive agility from standstill – peak torque of 250 Nm is on tap from just 1250 rpm all the way up to 4000 rpm.

Consumption per hp halved: efficiency has doubled in twelve years

The tremendous efficiency potential held by petrol engines is illustrated by a look back over the entry-level petrol models for the C-Class and its immediate predecessor, the 190 (W201 model series). This was launched in 1982 with an output of 66 kW (90 hp) and consumption of 8.5 litres/100 km based on the Euromix formula used at that time. When the W203 model series debuted in 2000, the output of the entry-level C 180 climbed to 95 kW (129 hp), while fuel consumption measured according to the new NEDC standard was 9.4 litres/100 km. Twelve years later, the entry-level C-Class from the W204 model series generates a powerful 115 kW (156 hp), but burns just 5.8 litres of fuel per 100 km. This means that output has increased by 21 percent while fuel consumption has been lowered by 37 percent since 2000. Or to put it another way – instead of 0.0729 litres of fuel per hp, today’s C-Class consumes just 0.0372 litres per hp, making it almost twice as efficient as its predecessor from 2000.

BlueDIRECT technology from the luxury segment becomes widely available

The technology of the Mercedes-Benz combustion system, which was first introduced in 2010 on the new V6 and V8 engines, has now made its four-cylinder debut with the launch of the new engine. At its core is third-generation spray-guided, homogenous direct injection with centrally positioned, fast-switching injectors, where fuel is injected at a pressure of up to 200 bar. A single-plunger pump with a flow control valve integrated into the pump module serves as the high-pressure pump. This is supplemented by multi-spark ignition, turbocharging and the ECO start/stop function.

Compared to the engine it replaces, internal engine friction has been reduced by 16 percent, while engine weight has been lowered by 18 percent, thereby setting a benchmark amongst comparable four-cylinder units.

Low friction losses and on-demand control of ancillary units both help to further enhance the engine’s energy efficiency. Oil is supplied via a two-stage, variable-speed vane pump. An electronically controlled thermostat in the coolant circuit provides for map-controlled regulation of the warm-up phase, with no coolant flowing through the cylinder head when the engine is cold. The water pump is controlled in such a way that the passenger compartment can be heated up as soon as possible.

The epitome of the luxury coupé

Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz is marking the anniversary of “60 years of the S-Class Coupé” with a new “Grand Edition” model. The features of the CL‑Class “Grand Edition” include exclusive designo paintwork, high-quality designo leather appointments and sportily elegant 20-inch wheels. AMG bodystyling elements add a distinctive touch of sportiness, while a special badge indicates the exclusive nature of this anniversary edition of the luxury coupé.

The launch of the sensational 300 S in 1952 established the lineage of today’s CL-Class. The large S-Class Coupés from Stuttgart have been considered the epitome of automotive refinement ever since. These two-door luxury-class coupés combine the comfort of a prestige luxury saloon with the dynamics of a sports car in the form of an exceptionally elegant tourer. They offer stunning design, exclusive appointments and top-flight technology. For its new “Grand Edition” special edition model, Mercedes-Benz has further honed the sophisticated and unmistakable style of this design icon, adding further to its cachet and maintaining the brand’s leadership status in the luxury car segment.

In order to emphasise further the exclusive, hand-finished character of the CL‑Class, Mercedes-Benz has furnished the “Grand Edition” with some of the finest ingredients from the exquisite designo range. Customers can choose between the three designo paint finishes of platinum black metallic, mocha black metallic and the currently very voguish matt finish of magno cashmere white. A sporty note is added to the car’s look by the AMG Sports package, with powerful front and rear aprons and distinctive side sill panels. Also included here are 20-inch light-alloy wheels in a choice of five-spoke or filigree 10-spoke designs. A “Grand Edition” badge provides a discreet indication of the CL Coupé’s exclusive-edition status.

In the interior, exquisitely handcrafted, high-quality aniline leather serves to underline the luxurious nature of the “Grand Edition”. Three stunning and tasteful leather colours are available to choose from for the interior appointments: designo aniline leather armagnac, designo aniline leather deep black and the lighter designo aniline leather porcelain. The full range of CL trim finishes is available, including black ash and high-gloss burr walnut.

As with all CL models, the CL “Grand Edition” is also exceptional in technical terms. The active suspension system Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilisation, for example, sets the benchmark for driving dynamics and comfort on all rear-wheel drive CL models. Safety systems such as the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE® automatic emergency braking and the optional Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Adaptive Highbeam Assist systems, ensure that the CL takes pole position in the luxury coupé segment.

And the same is true of the engine range: the current V8 biturbo with a displacement of 4.6 litres and sophisticated spray-guided direct petrol injection system in the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY delivers 320 kW (435 hp), provides torque of 700 newton metres and opens up a whole new dimension of efficiency in the luxury coupé segment (9.5 l/100 km combined; 224 g/km CO2). The same engine is also used in the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The pinnacle of the engine range is provided by the CL 600 with its 380 kW (517 hp) 12-cylinder biturbo (displacement: 5.5 litres).

Irrespective of which base model is chosen, the CL “Grand Edition” is available for a package price of 4850 euros (excl. VAT). This represents a benefit to the customer of up to 38 percent. The complex designo magno paintwork is priced at an additional 1500 euros.

The top model of the Viano line combines spaciousness with exclusivity. It sets new standards with its tasteful and stylish interior featuring select materials and its dynamic exterior.

Striking exterior: Exclusive appearance exuding dynamism and style

The front end design featuring a modified radiator grille and a distinctive bumper with integrated LED daytime driving lights provides a subtle yet effective initial indication of the class embodied by this exclusive Viano. The new “magno allanite grey” paintwork featuring a satin finish plays its part in defining the vehicle’s special appearance. An alternative new metallic paint finish will also be available to customers from the start-up of production.

19-inch light-alloy wheels with two-tone paintwork and tyres in 245/45 R 19 emphasize the dynamic character of the Viano PEARL Limited Edition. Luxurious interior: high-quality real wood, fine nappa leather and trim elements in brushed aluminium

Entrance steps with walnut wood strips and illuminated brand lettering welcome passengers aboard. The rear boasts a real walnut floor finished in a warm walnut stain. Despite its protective seal, the material presents an open-pored and natural appearance. The side trim panels in the rear and the cockpit are also in walnut. Roof liner and window pillars feature high-quality DINAMICA fabric.

The front seats and the four individual seats in the rear are upholstered in finest two-tone nappa leather in seashell grey and grey beige. Contrasting stitching adds an attractive highlight, as do the trim strips in brushed aluminium, whose colour is designed to complement the two nappa leather variants. The glazing can be switched directly from light to dark or dimmed in ten successive stages. This effect is made possible by liquid crystals in the double glazing which adjust their orientation according to the applied voltage, thereby altering the degree of transparency.

Specially tailored sound system from Bang & Olufsen

A “BeoSound Viano” sound system from Bang & Olufsen, produced and tuned specifically for the Viano PEARL Limited Edition, provides for superior on-board audio quality. The system comprises an amplifier with a total output of 1320 W, together with 18 high-end loudspeakers and four illuminated tweeter lenses distributed throughout the interior.

A W-LAN hotspot keeps the vehicle connected for entertainment or work purposes while on the road. Up to four terminals can be connected simultaneously to the internet.


Limited edition based on the Viano VISION PEARL showcar

The Viano PEARL CDI 3.0 Blue EFFICIENCY Limited Edition is powered by a V6 diesel engine rated at 165 kW (224 hp) which combines superior performance with restrained fuel consumption. Alternatively, the new top Viano model is also available as a 3.5 variant with a V6 petrol engine rated at 190 kW (258 hp). Both engine variants come with an automatic transmission.

The new flagship for the Mercedes-Benz Viano originates from the impressive Viano VISION PEARL show car at the last Frankfurt International Motor Show. The highly positive response to the show car prompted Mercedes-Benz Vans to take it as the basis for development of the new series-production model. The Mercedes-Benz Limited Edition Viano PEARL will be premiered at the Geneva Motor Show from 6 to 18 March. It will retail at € 99,000 net. The Viano PEARL Limited Edition will be available for ordering from the spring. The initial vehicles will be delivered to customers in the summer of 2012.

With its range of around 130 km it is ideal for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as pedestrian zones, city centres or health resorts. The range of 130 km is optimised for deployment on short routes involving numerous stops.

Diverse range of applications in local emission-free passenger transport

The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL crewbus lends itself to a broad scope of applications: in particular, for the first time ever it offers companies a local emission-free and also highly comfortable means of organising the short-range transportation of passengers on shuttle services or internal company transport services. Apart from restaurants and hotels in downtown locations with restricted access, the Vito E-CELL crewbus is also a highly interesting proposition for deployment in conservation areas and nature reserves. It is equally ideal for works transport at large companies or for deployment at airports and seaports.

Showcasing state-of-the-art drive technology: transparent model of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL at the Geneva Motor Show

For the first time ever, the transparent model of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL provides a vivid demonstration of how electric mobility works. Mercedes-Benz is offering clear insights in Geneva into the Vito E-CELL’s mode of functioning: from chargers through voltage transformers, high-voltage control units and the battery to the electric motor. The model employs high-performance LEDs to visualise the flow of current from the battery via the control electronics to the drive shafts.

The technical concept behind the Vito E-CELL crewbus

The electric motor (60 kW; max. torque 280 Nm), power electronics, transformer and AC/DC charger are accommodated under the bonnet. The generated power is transmitted to the front wheels. The powerful and robust lithium-ion traction batteries are accommodated under the passenger compartment floor. The nominal voltage stands at 360 V, with a capacity of 36 kWh. The speed is electronically limited to 89 km/h in the interests of a range of 130 km (New European Driving Cycle, NEDC). The Vito E-CELL crewbus is well able to hold its own in city traffic with the available battery power. Acceleration from 0 to 50/80 km/h in 6.5/11 seconds ensures that it is a swift mover at all times.

The Vito E-CELL’s batteries are charged from the 380/400 V grid in a maximum of five hours. Charging from the 230 V grid is subsequently possible as necessary. The battery additionally stores recuperated power while the vehicle is in motion.

The Vito E-CELL does not compromise on safety: ESP and driver’s airbag come as standard and a safety belt is integrated in each seat. The batteries are protected by a crash element. In the event of airbag activation, the high-voltage technology will be shut down automatically. The Vito E-CELL has demonstrated its high safety standard in an impressive manner in crash tests.

Clocking up 650,000 km, a wealth of positive experience and numerous awards

After its first year in service with customers, the Vito E-CELL has proven its credentials as an ideal vehicle for urban traffic. In all, 230 Vito E-CELL vans are now on the road as part of the promotion schemes currently in operation in Germany. Together, they have so far successfully covered around 650,000 km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL has won a host of awards from independent juries. Among its titles is “Green Commercial of the Year”. Geneva – A world first from Mercedes-Benz Vans: the Vito E-CELL crewbus is the first seven-seater vehicle worldwide to offer local emission-free mobility ex-factory as standard.

With its range of around 130 km it is ideal for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as pedestrian zones, city centres or health resorts. The range of 130 km is optimised for deployment on short routes involving numerous stops.

Diverse range of applications in local emission-free passenger transport

The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL crewbus lends itself to a broad scope of applications: in particular, for the first time ever it offers companies a local emission-free and also highly comfortable means of organising the short-range transportation of passengers on shuttle services or internal company transport services. Apart from restaurants and hotels in downtown locations with restricted access, the Vito E-CELL crewbus is also a highly interesting proposition for deployment in conservation areas and nature reserves. It is equally ideal for works transport at large companies or for deployment at airports and seaports.

Showcasing state-of-the-art drive technology: transparent model of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL at the Geneva Motor Show

For the first time ever, the transparent model of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL provides a vivid demonstration of how electric mobility works. Mercedes-Benz is offering clear insights in Geneva into the Vito E-CELL’s mode of functioning: from chargers through voltage transformers, high-voltage control units and the battery to the electric motor. The model employs high-performance LEDs to visualise the flow of current from the battery via the control electronics to the drive shafts.

The technical concept behind the Vito E-CELL crewbus

The electric motor (60 kW; max. torque 280 Nm), power electronics, transformer and AC/DC charger are accommodated under the bonnet. The generated power is transmitted to the front wheels. The powerful and robust lithium-ion traction batteries are accommodated under the passenger compartment floor. The nominal voltage stands at 360 V, with a capacity of 36 kWh. The speed is electronically limited to 89 km/h in the interests of a range of 130 km (New European Driving Cycle, NEDC). The Vito E-CELL crewbus is well able to hold its own in city traffic with the available battery power. Acceleration from 0 to 50/80 km/h in 6.5/11 seconds ensures that it is a swift mover at all times.

The Vito E-CELL’s batteries are charged from the 380/400 V grid in a maximum of five hours. Charging from the 230 V grid is subsequently possible as necessary. The battery additionally stores recuperated power while the vehicle is in motion.

The Vito E-CELL does not compromise on safety: ESP and driver’s airbag come as standard and a safety belt is integrated in each seat. The batteries are protected by a crash element. In the event of airbag activation, the high-voltage technology will be shut down automatically. The Vito E-CELL has demonstrated its high safety standard in an impressive manner in crash tests.

Clocking up 650,000 km, a weath of positive experience and numerous awards

After its first year in service with customers, the Vito E-CELL has proven its credentials as an ideal vehicle for urban traffic. In all, 230 Vito E-CELL vans are now on the road as part of the promotion schemes currently in operation in Germany. Together, they have so far successfully covered around 650,000 km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL has won a host of awards from independent juries. Among its titles is “Green Commercial of the Year”. Mario Götze and Benedikt Höwedes to become Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors

Geneva/Stuttgart. Not only the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class was presented to public for the first time on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show. Along with the two current brand ambassadors Joachim Löw and Oliver Bierhoff, new brand representatives Benedikt Höwedes and Mario Götze were on hand to introduce the new A-Class.

According to Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing: “These two players represent the pulse of a new generation. They are athletic, young and assertive. And they demonstrate a refreshingly new, inspiring style of aesthetics, self-confidence and dynamism. In other words, they fit in perfectly with the new generation of compact-class cars”.

“I am delighted to be part of such an outstanding brand like Mercedes-Benz”, said Mario Götze. “As national team players, we often have the opportunity to test drive Mercedes-Benz cars – which is always an exciting experience”. Benedikt Höwedes commented: “I am an avid Mercedes-Benz fan. The design of the new A-Class is really impressive. Super sporty, but still a Mercedes. This style appeals to me – and I’m sure other young people will like it as well”.

As Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors, Mario Götze and Benedikt Höwedes will be taking on representational tasks. According to plans, they will be appearing at Mercedes-Benz events and special brand presentations. The two players will also be involved in communication activities, including above-the-line advertising and social media.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the entire German national football team will appear in the “The pulse of a new generation” campaign to be launched by Mercedes-Benz in time for the European Football Championship. The campaign was filmed in Munich on January 30, 2012.

Stuttgart/Geneva. Travelling in ultimate style: the new Mercedes-Benz Viano PEARL Limited Edition demonstrates the possibilities offered by a large-capacity vehicle. The top model of the Viano line combines spaciousness with exclusivity. It sets new standards with its tasteful and stylish interior featuring select materials and its dynamic exterior.

 

Striking exterior: Exclusive appearance exuding dynamism and style

The front end design featuring a modified radiator grille and a distinctive bumper with integrated LED daytime driving lights provides a subtle yet effective initial indication of the class embodied by this exclusive Viano. The new “magno allanite grey” paintwork featuring a satin finish plays its part in defining the vehicle’s special appearance. An alternative new metallic paint finish will also be available to customers from the start-up of production.

19-inch light-alloy wheels with two-tone paintwork and tyres in 245/45 R 19 emphasize the dynamic character of the Viano PEARL Limited Edition. The vehicle’s equally elegant character is underlined by shoulder line trim strips. The exterior can be further refined with the optional roof rails in the contrasting dark colour “mountain grey”.

Luxurious interior: high-quality real wood, fine nappa leather and trim elements in brushed aluminium

Entrance steps with walnut wood strips and illuminated brand lettering welcome passengers aboard. The rear boasts a real walnut floor finished in a warm walnut stain. Despite its protective seal, the material presents an open-pored and natural appearance. The side trim panels in the rear and the cockpit are also in walnut. Roof liner and window pillars feature high-quality DINAMICA fabric.

The front seats and the four individual seats in the rear are upholstered in finest two-tone nappa leather in seashell grey and grey beige. Contrasting stitching adds an attractive highlight, as do the trim strips in brushed aluminium, whose colour is designed to complement the two nappa leather variants. Subtle, dimmable ambient lighting behind the aluminium trim strips underscores the sedate atmosphere reminiscent of a stylish yacht.

Impressive dimming effect with electrochromatic glass

Passengers are able to control the degree of privacy which they wish to enjoy on board the Viano PEARL Limited Edition, thanks to MAGIC SKY CONTROL, featuring electrochromatic glass for the rear side windows which can be darkened at the touch of a button. The glazing can be switched directly from light to dark or dimmed in ten successive stages. This effect is made possible by liquid crystals in the double glazing which adjust their orientation according to the applied voltage, thereby altering the degree of transparency.

Specially tailored sound system from Bang & Olufsen

A “BeoSound Viano” sound system from Bang & Olufsen, produced and tuned specifically for the Viano PEARL Limited Edition, provides for superior on-board audio quality. The system comprises an amplifier with a total output of 1320 W, together with 18 high-end loudspeakers and four illuminated tweeter lenses distributed throughout the interior.

A W-LAN hotspot keeps the vehicle connected for entertainment or work purposes while on the road. Up to four terminals can be connected simultaneously to the internet.

Limited edition based on the Viano VISION PEARL showcar

The Viano PEARL CDI 3.0 Blue EFFICIENCY Limited Edition is powered by a V6 diesel engine rated at 165 kW (224 hp) which combines superior performance with restrained fuel consumption. Alternatively, the new top Viano model is also available as a 3.5 variant with a V6 petrol engine rated at 190 kW (258 hp). Both engine variants come with an automatic transmission.

The new flagship for the Mercedes-Benz Viano originates from the impressive Viano VISION PEARL show car at the last Frankfurt International Motor Show. The highly positive response to the show car prompted Mercedes-Benz Vans to take it as the basis for development of the new series-production model. The Mercedes-Benz Limited Edition Viano PEARL will be premiered at the Geneva Motor Show from 6 to 18 March. It will retail at € 99,000 net. The Viano PEARL Limited Edition will be available for ordering from the spring. The initial vehicles will be delivered to customers in the summer of 2012.

      Το θέμα είναι ότι είχαν ήδη μοτέρ και δεν το έκαναν. Ιδίως όταν βάζεις μοντέλο για πρώτη φορά σε μια κατηγορία πρέπει να είσαι πλήρης. 

      Ναι μεν δεν είναι όλοι Ελλάδα για να βάλεις “μικρό” μοτέρ αλλά αυτά τα μοτέρ σου έχουν και παραπάνω ροπή και λιγότερο βάρος και καλύτερες επιδόσεις (ισχύος/κατανάλωσης) από τον ατμοσφαιρικό σου.
