H Volvo ετοιμάζει το S90, το αυτοκίνητο που θα αντικαταστήσει το γερασμένο πλέον S80, με τους Σουηδούς να στοχεύουν ψηλά με το συγκεκριμένο μοντέλο. Η Volvo θέλει το S90, που θα παρουσιαστεί στα τέλη του έτους, να σταθεί απέναντι από τα Audi A6, BMW Σειράς 5, Jaguar XF και Mercedes E-Class, “κλέβοντας” πελάτες από τα μοντέλα αυτά. Το αυτοκίνητο θα προσφέρεται και σε wagon έκδοση, η οποία θα ονομαστεί V90 και αναμένεται να κυκλοφορήσει μέσα στο 2016.
Εκπρόσωπος της Volvo δήλωσε πως το S90 θα διαθέτει πιο διακριτικό σχεδιασμό από το XC90, αλλά θα εφοδιάζεται με όλα τα στοιχεία που θα το κάνουν ανταγωνιστικό στις αγορές των Η.Π.Α και της Κίνας, δύο αγορές όπου τα μεγάλα σεντάν εξακολουθούν εν έτει 2015 να είναι δημοφιλή. Στις άλλες μεγάλες αγορές του κόσμου, η ζήτηση για μεγάλα πολυτελή σεντάν μοντέλα παρουσιάζει πτωτική πορεία.
To S90 θα κατασκευαστεί πάνω στην αρθρωτή πλατφόρμα SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) που χρησιμοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά στο νέο XC90, με την Volvo να σκέφτεται και ένα μεγαλύτερο μοντέλο, το S100, ώστε να το τοποθετήσει απέναντι από τα Audi A8, BMW Σειράς 7, Jaguar XJ και Mercedes S-Class.
Σε ότι αφορά το V40 Polestar. Η ιδέα βρίσκεται ακόμη στο μυαλό των Σουηδών, αλλά αν θα περάσει στη παραγωγή, θα πρέπει να βγει με σωστή τιμή. Μηχανικά θα φορά έναν 2,0-λιτρο τετρακύλινδρο κινητήρα απόδοσης κοντά στους 320 ίππους. Η κίνηση θα περνά σε όλους τους τροχούς, θα διαθέτει αυτόματο κιβώτιο με paddles, φρένα της Brembo και αναρτήσεις της Öhlins.
Τέλος η Volvo θέλει στο άμεσο μέλλον της, όλα τα μοντέλα της να διαθέτουν και υβριδική έκδοση. Οι πωλήσεις του XC90 plug-in πηγαίνουν πολύ καλά, με την Volvo να υπολόγισε πως αυτές θα αντιστοιχούσαν στο 3% με 5% των πωλήσεων του XC90. Aντ’ αυτού, η υβριδική έκδοση του XC90 έχει κάνει το 20% των πωλήσεων του. Η αρχή θα γίνει με το V60 D6 Twin Engine που θα παρουσιαστεί την ερχόμενη εβδομάδα στην έκθεση της Σανγκάη. Αυτό συνδυάζει έναν 2,0-λιτρο Drive-E βενζινοκινητήρα απόδοσης 238 ίππων και έναν ηλεκτροκινητήρα 50 kW (68 ίππων) στον πίσω άξονα, που παίρνει κίνηση από μια μπαταρία ιόντων λιθίου 11,2 kWh. Συνδυαστικά παράγει 306 άλογα με 550 Nm ροπής έχοντας 53 χλμ ηλεκτρική αυτονομία. Τα 0-100 χλμ/ώρα τα κάνει σε 5,6 δευτερόλεπτα, εκπέμποντας 49 γρ/χλμ CO2. Η φόρτιση της μπαταρίες απαιτεί 3,5 ώρες.

Petrol plug-in hybrid
The new S60L Twin Engine is manufactured in Volvo Cars’ Chengdu Plant. A true Swedish heart beats beneath the bonnet in the form of a Drive-E four-cylinder 2–liter petrol engine, linked to rear-axle drive 50 kW electric motor, powered by an energy-optimized 11,2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This combination delivers 306 hp (238 + 68 hp) and 350 + 200 Nm with emissions of just 49 g/km*, making it one of the best performing plug-in hybrids on the market today. Twin Engine technology is Volvo’s name for plug-in hybrid powertrain innovation, as a part of the Drive-E Powertrain program. It represents Volvo’s commitment to maximising driving pleasure while minimising both cost of ownership for the driver and environmental impact and maintaining its lead in hybrid powertrain innovation. The Twin Engine concept is based on the coupling of an internal combustion engine and a battery-driven electric motor.
Drive Modes: Pure Hybrid Power
Twin Engine variants come with several drive modes that deliver three entirely different driving experiences: Pure, Hybrid or Power.
In Pure mode, the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible. The range is up to 53 kilometres.
Hybrid is the standard setting whenever the car is started. The diesel engine and electric motor cooperate to achieve CO2 emissions (NEDC, mixed driving cycle for certification) of 49 g/km (2.1 l/100km).
In Power mode, the technology is optimised to give the car the maximum possible power. The petrol engine and electric motor combine to deliver a total power output of 238 + 68 hp (or 350 + 200 Nm). The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds (preliminary data).
Save battery power for later
The driver can choose to save battery power in order to drive on pure electricity later on, for instance in an urban green zone or in the heart of a city.
When Save is activated, the on-board system ensures that there is always sufficient charge for driving later in Pure mode. If necessary, the high-voltage generator will charge the battery pack so there is sufficient capacity for driving in Pure mode.
Preconditioning while charging
The S60L Twin Engine can be recharged from a regular power outlet (230V/6A, 10A or 16A fuse) at home or in a parking lot. Recharging time varies with amperage. A full charge with 10A takes 4.5 hours. This is cut to 3.5 hours with 16A, while a 6A charge takes 7.5 hours.
It is also possible to heat or cool the passenger compartment while recharging the car to provide a more comfortable start to your journey. This also means that more battery power is available for actually propelling the car.
The pre-conditioning function can also cool the batteries if necessary. Cooling prior to driving is very important in order to maximise battery charge and thus also range.
The S60L Twin Engine has two heating systems. In electric mode the car uses a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) air heater. The car also has a fuel-powered heater.
