Η Ελβετική ομάδα έκλεισε το οδηγικό της δίδυμο για το 2014 και παρά τις προθέσεις της, ο Sergey Sirotkin δεν κατάφερε τελικά να πάρει τη super license, που απαιτείται για να λάβει μέρος κάποιος οδηγός σε αγώνα Formula 1. Έτσι, ο δρόμος άνοιξε για την παραμονή του Μεξικανού Esteban Gutierrez και του χορηγού του Telmex. Ο Gutierrez, που δεν εντυπωσίασε την πρώτη του χρονιά στο πρωτάθλημα, θα έχει ως teammate τον έμπειρο Adrian Sutil, με το Sirotkin να υπογράφει στο ρόλο του δοκιμαστή και το αφεντικό της ομάδας, Monisha Kaltenborn, να δηλώνει:
Τώρα θα συνεχίσουμε να τον στηρίζουμε, ώστε να πάρει τη super license. Στόχος μας παραμένει η προετοιμασία για το ντεμπούτο του στη Formula 1.
Με την ανακοίνωση της παραμονής Gutierrez στη Sauber, οι μόνες θέσεις που μένουν ανοιχτές για το 2014, είναι οι δυο στην Caterham και η μια στην ομάδα της Marussia. Όπως διάβασες χθες, ο Kamui Kobayashi και ο Marcus Ericsson έχουν πλεονέκτημα για να υπογράψουν με την Caterham, ενώ, ένας εκ των Pic ή Van der Garde για την Marussia. Το τελευταίο πρακτικά σημαίνει αποχώρηση του Max Chilton από τη Ρωσική ομάδα, αφού ο χορηγός του Aon σκέφτεται την στροφή προς το ποδόσφαιρο.

Esteban Gutiérrez:
“I am happy to be able to continue as a driver for the Sauber F1 Team. It was a steep learning curve last season, but by working closely with the team I was able to improve continuously. It will be my fourth year with the team, the second as a racing driver, and I feel comfortable in taking the next step. The technical challenges in 2014 will be massive. Therefore it will be even more important to know well the people you are working with. I will do my very best to improve even more and support the team the best way I can.”
