Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen is to produce an additional model – the GLC Coupé – and will create 200 new jobs

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen is to produce an additional model: the GLC Coupé. This new car recently had its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show. The Bremen plant is also continuing its successful transformation plan in cooperation with the works council and is creating 200 new, permanent jobs in Bremen. The plant is operating at high levels of capacity; as well as the GLC Coupé, it will also receive another new model to be produced later in the year: the C-Class Cabriolet. In total, ten different models will then roll off the assembly lines in Bremen.

Bremen – The Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen is to produce an additional model – the GLC Coupé – and will take on 200 temporary workers as permanent employees. The plant is thus continuing the transformation plan agreed upon with the works council last year. The plan specified measures to be taken to increase production and flexibility, as well as the production of two additional models. While the C-Class Cabriolet was already presented at the beginning of the year, the new GLC Coupé just recently had its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show.

The creation of more jobs has now been decided upon in cooperation with the works council. “With the new agreement, we are continuing our successful transformation plan from the year 2015,” stated Peter Theurer, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Bremen Plant. “We are gaining further flexibility while reducing the workload for our team. This puts the Bremen plant into a very good position with regard to the ambitious ‘Mercedes-Benz 2020’ growth strategy.” The 200 new positions will be occupied by employees who are currently deployed at the Bremen plant as temporary workers.

Michael Peters, Chairman of the Works Council at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen: “We are very pleased with our achievement in the negotiations with the management to create 200 permanent jobs for temporary employees in addition to our existing agreements. This is a great sign for the workforce and the region. The agreement gives clear prospects for the future to all temporary workers who are employed at the Bremen plant for more than twelve months. This is a tremendously important step for those colleagues and a major success for the team in Bremen.”

In May 2015, the plant’s management and works council agreed on a transformation plan that further strengthens Bremen’s role as the lead plant for global production of the C-Class. That includes the investment of more than 750 million euros in the modernization and expansion of the plant, also with regard to the digital transformation. Not even a year later, the plant – which has recently been rewarded as “Factory of the Year” in the category large-scale production – is developing in a way that enabled new negotiations. Bremen is operating at high levels of capacity. With the two new models, the C-Class Cabriolet and the GLC Coupé, a total of ten models will roll off the assembly lines in Bremen.
