H 25-χρονη Simona de Silvestro υπέγραψε με την Sauber, για να μπει στο πρόγραμμα προετοιμασίας οδηγών της Ελβετικής ομάδας. Σκοπός της είναι να προετοιμαστεί κατάλληλα για να βγάλει το ειδικό δίπλωμα που είναι απαραίτητο για όλους τους οδηγούς Formula 1 (την Super Licence), έτσι ώστε να μπορέσει να συμμετάσχει στο πρωτάθλημα του 2015.
Η Iron Lady αγωνίστηκε το 2005 στην Ιταλική Formula Renault και έπειτα δοκίμασε την τύχη της στην Αμερική, καθώς δεν έβρισκε τους απαραίτητους χορηγούς στην Ευρώπη. Εκεί αγωνίστηκε στην Formula BMW, δοκιμάζοντας ξανά την τύχη της το 2007 στην Ευρώπη με τα μονοθέσια GP2. Μην μπορώντας να φτάσει τους χρόνους των Davide Valsecchi και Giedo van der Garde, αποφάσισε να ξαναμετακομίσει στις ΗΠΑ, όπου και αγωνιζόταν τα τελευταία 4 χρόνια στο πρωτάθλημα IndyCar, μαθαίνοντας τις πίστες απ’έξω.
Εκεί κέρδισε το παρατσούκλι “Iron Lady” όντας η πρώτη γυναίκα στο βάθρο πίστας δρόμου και το βραβείο “Rookie of the Year” το 2010. Η de Silvestro δήλωσε ενθουσιασμένη που επιστρέφει κοντά στο όνειρό της:

Simona De Silvestro becomes Sauber F1 Team affiliated driver
Hinwil, 14th February 2014 – The Sauber F1 Team is pleased to announce that Simona De Silvestro will become an affiliated driver.
The 25-year-old Swiss left for the US when she was just 18 to drive in the Formula BMW USA series in 2006 and the Atlantic Championship from 2007 to 2009. Over the past four years De Silvestro has been driving in the IndyCar Series. She won the prestigious Indy 500 “Rookie of the Year” Award in 2010 and became the first woman to earn a podium finish on a street circuit in IndyCar.
This year she is taking the next step in her career by joining a preparation programme with the Sauber F1 Team, with the goal to gain her super licence and prepare for a race seat in Formula One for 2015. The programme will include on track testing, simulator training, as well as mental and physical preparation.
