Mazda TAKERI concept makes ist European premiere

Mazda’s new CD-segment sedan concept combines the company’s distinctively sporty KODO design with its cutting-edge SYKACTIV TECHNOLOGY taken to the next level. The Mazda TAKERI also provides a unique glimpse at how tomorrow looks.

Europe is getting a taste of the future direction of Mazda’s next generation CD sedan with the TAKERI concept European debut at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show. Featuring the company’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, the TAKERI inherits the vision of the Mazda SHINARI, an exciting four-door sports coupe concept showcased last year in Geneva.

The TAKERI features Mazda’s new and highly-efficient SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine with i-stop and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. Together with Mazda’s brand-new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, the TAKERI aims for the ultimate in energy efficiency, but without compromising on Mazda’s characteristic Zoom-Zoom performance. The future of the CD-segment looks and feels good.

All-new Mazda CX-5 marks a new era at Mazda

Designed to unite the best of all worlds, the Mazda CX-5 being showcased in Geneva will certainly raise the bar for compact SUVs in Europe.

It’s the start of a new age: The all-new Mazda CX-5, a compact crossover SUV set to arrive at dealers in Europe in spring 2012, is the first of an entirely new generation of Mazdas to adopt the company’s exciting “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme as well as the complete range of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY developed entirely in-house at Mazda.

The CX-5 is available with a choice of powerful yet exceptionally efficient four-cylinder engines with i-stop – the 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel, featuring a variable twin turbocharger and two power variants, and the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G, a naturally-aspirated direct injection petrol unit. When developing these brand-new engines, Mazda opted for extreme compression ratios (14:1), resolving the conflicts that have until now prevented carmakers from taking this approach. One of two new six-speed transmissions – the SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and SKYACTIV-MT manual – brings power to the wheels in either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive format.

Mazda’s new platform features the lightweight yet rigid SKYACTIVBody and SKYACTIV-Chassis, ensuring outstanding passive safety and predictable and responsive driving fitting for such impressive powertrains. The remarkable aerodynamics, meanwhile, contribute to the CX-5’s fuel economy, enviable for its class with CO2 emissions starting at 119 g/km.

On the inside, the CX-5 provides a lesson in extraordinary flexibility, generous passenger comfort and abundant cargo space. Designed using high-quality materials, the interior delivers superior functionality and minimal cabin noise. Security is exceptional as well, with active safety systems never seen before in this segment, like Mazda’s new Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)* and Lane Departure Warning System*.

Simply put, the all-new Mazda CX-5 sets a new standard for the compact

SUV segment in Europe. With a design expressing vitality and agility and new technology delivering the performance to match its looks, the CX-5 symbolises “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” at its best yet.

Mazda MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012

Mazda is also introducing a limited edition version of its legendary roadster at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show.

2. European premiere –

Mazda TAKERI concept

The Mazda TAKERI is the latest and furthest evolved manifestation of Mazda’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme. Featuring Mazda’s brand-new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system along with breakthrough SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, the new-generation CDsegment sedan concept being revealed to Europe at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show offers a look at Mazda’s future.

Uniquely sporty for a sedan in the hotly-contested CD segment, the Mazda TAKERI makes a strong statement about Mazda’s vision for beauty, efficiency and performance. Inheriting the emotion of the Mazda SHINARI, a four-door sports coupe concept unveiled in 2010 as the first incarnation of KODO (see box), the TAKERI reveals the direction of Mazda’s next-generation mid-sized sedan, the heart of the company’s line-up. Indeed, this evolved styling projects a level of excitement and vitality unmatched in its class.

A glimpse ahead

Underneath the TAKERI’s stunning exterior lurks a wealth of cuttingedge Mazda innovation. Developed in pursuit of the ultimate in energy efficiency, it features Mazda’s ultra-effective and lightweight SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, which is being introduced to the mass market on the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV. Together with the company’s intelligent “i-stop” idle-stop system and unique all-newi-ELOOP regenerative braking system (see box), Mazda has achieved astonishing improvements in fuel efficiency as well as driving performance.

Under the hood, power is provided by the remarkably clean and efficient yet highly dynamic 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D, a new-generation clean diesel engine featuring exceptionally wide-ranging torque. Coupled with the new six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission, the Mazda TAKERI is extremely enjoyable to drive, delivering outstanding fuel economy despite its superior, refined performance.

Another piece of the future

Contributing to such efficiency are the fruits of Mazda’s building block strategy (see box), which strives to continually increase the efficiency of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY by adding innovative new auxiliary systems. Thus far, this strategy has spawned the i-stop system also seen on the SKYACTIV-D in the CX-5, and now i-ELOOP, which makes its first-ever appearance on the TAKERI.

The Mazda TAKERI is living proof of just how far the company has come with its vision. Graceful efficiency and, of course, dynamic driving fun, all packaged in a captivating revelation for the future of the CD-segment

Building block strategy:

The evolution of SKYACTIV

Back in 2007, Mazda devised its “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” strategy, which calls for a staggering 30% increase in fuel efficiency (based on 2008 levels) for all Mazda vehicles available worldwide by 2015.

This corresponds to a 23% reduction in fuel consumption and therefore CO2 output. It’s an ambitious objective being implemented using Mazda’s building block strategy consisting of the implementation of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and the step-by-step introduction of auxiliary systems to these SKYACTIV powertrains.

Mazda’s own i-stop (idle-stop) technology, introduced in 2009, was stage one on the path to optimised internal combustion technology. The new SKYACTIV petrol and diesel engines in Europe will come equipped with i-stop. Stage two is the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, which recovers energy during deceleration and makes its debut on the Mazda TAKERI. As far as hybrids are concerned, Mazda has formed a partnership with Toyota to combine its hybrid technology with SKYACTIV engines.

These individual developments are the ingredients to the SKYACTIV concept – and its evolution. The company’s goals for improving fuel economy and CO2 emissions by 2015 would only be otherwise possible if either half of all new Mazda passenger cars were hybrids or almost one quarter purely electric.

At a glance: Mazda TAKERI Concept

Design

The TAKERI builds on Mazda’s original SHINARI sports coupe concept, adapting it into a distinctive CD sedan package – and pointing the way to the future Mazda CD sedan.

Exterior

  • Designers captured the strength of a coiled cheetah ready to spring into motion and run free.
  • The front-to-rear axis (or “spine”) conveys the vehicle’s confidence and a sense of speed.
  • The cabin, placed towards the rear to articulate the TAKERI’s formidable proportions, helps convey a perfect balance between elegance and a convincing expression of inherent driving joy.
  • The deeply set headlamps impart a profound sense of solidity, while the TAKERI‘s “signature wing” nose makes it immediately recognisable as a new-generation Mazda.
  • The rear end, too, expresses determination, as the lines from the side join the robustly-sculpted boot to radiate the TAKERI‘s poise as well as its potential.
  • The red body colour was specially developed to accentuate the passionate shapes and delicate inflections of the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, amplifying the TAKERI‘s depth and enhancing its textures.
  • The stunning design optimises air flow both over and under the vehicle for superior aerodynamics to complement the TAKERI’s lightweight SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

Interior

  • Interior designers focused on high-quality materials to establish a degree of comfort and ambiance fitting for Mazda’s top-of-the-line CD-segment sedan.
  • Powerful, flowing lines from the instrument panel to the door trim and sides of the cabin evoke KODO’s dynamism and speed while at the same time expressing sedan solidity.

KODO : SOUL of Motion

Mazda has explored the various concepts of motion over the years to inspire its unique vehicle designs. This style evolved while observing the instantaneous movement of animals. This ultimate form of motion, brimming with energy and emotion, is the essence of Mazda’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme. It has been developed under the guidance of Mazda’s head of design, Ikuo Maeda.

Accordingly, a whole new generation of Mazda’s beginning with the CX-5 compact crossover SUV will be influenced by the power and beauty found in nature, the vitality and agility, its strength and its depth.

KODO was first introduced in 2010 on the Mazda SHINARI concept, a refreshingly unique four-door sports coupe. It was followed by the MINAGI concept, a compact crossover SUV and the forerunner of today’s Mazda CX-5 – the first mass production vehicle to fully embrace KODO.

Powertrain

The Mazda TAKERI‘s new and ultra-efficient SKYACTIV-D features i-stop, the world’s first* idle-stop system that restarts the clean diesel engine on the first compression stroke. It’s also the first Mazda equipped with the company’s innovative new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.

  • The TAKERI features Mazda’s unique i-ELOOP regenerative braking system:
  • i-ELOOP generates power from deceleration to run the vehicle’s electrical systems without the contribution from the engine.
  • i-ELOOP improves fuel economy by approximately 10% under everyday driving conditions, since the alternator is usually not required to power electrical systems.
  • Developers of the Mazda TAKERI’s SKYACTIV-D diesel engine achieved the world’s lowest compression ratio for a diesel-powered passenger car and thereby improved the air-fuel mixture and combustion timing to increase the expansion ratio of the cylinders, so they do more work while using less fuel and producing fewer emissions.
  • Low compression reduces mechanical stress and friction, enabling significant weight reductions to the various engine components.
  • The variable twin turbocharger delivers exhilarating acceleration while contributing to the engine’s exceptional fuel economy.
  • As a result, the SKYACTIV-D meets Euro 6 emissions standards without a pricey nitrous oxide after-treatment system.
  • The new SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission combines all the benefits of conventional torque converter automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions.
  • SKYACTIV-DRIVE makes the TAKERI a joy to drive as well as economical to operate.
  • The TAKERI is also equipped with Mazda’s latest i-stop system:
  • i-stop was developed specifically for SKYACTIV diesels and is the only idle-stop system that can restart the engine almost immediately in a single compression stroke*.
  • i-stop is smoother than conventional diesel idle-stop systems, which require at least two compression strokes for a restart.
  • i-stop reduces the load on the battery and starter motor, so it can shut off the vehicle more often and for longer durations, further reducing fuel consumption and therefore emissions.

i-ELOOP: Mazda’s unique regenerative braking system

Mazda’s new i-ELOOP, a unique regenerative braking system is the world’s first passenger car system that employs a capacitor to store the recovered electricity that is then used for all electric components. Short for “Intelligent Energy Loop”, this system improves fuel economy by approximately 10% under stop-and-go driving conditions. Mazda intends to steadily introduce i-ELOOP to its SKYACTIV internal combustion enginepowered model line-up.

Most commonly deployed to generate additional energy in electric vehicles and hybrids, regenerative braking has previously seen some use on internal combustion-powered vehicles. Its effectiveness here, however, has been limited thus far because of the less-than-ideal charging and power storage characteristics of the lead-acid starter batteries typically used in automobiles.

So, when developing i-ELOOP, Mazda engineers thoroughly analysed all aspects of deceleration to come up with a system that generates the most energy possible. They focused on the repeating cycle of vehicles speeding up and slowing down under everyday driving conditions. Because a typical deceleration phase lasts only about 10 seconds, they adopted a Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) instead of a dedicated battery to capture and temporarily store electricity within that brief period. The system uses a 12V–25V variable voltage alternator to efficiently generate power and charge the capacitor, which can be fully recharged in just a few seconds – well within one deceleration cycle. The DC/DC converter then steps down the voltage of the electricity in the capacitor to 12V to power electrical components like the climate control and audio systems. Any surplus electricity goes to the starter battery.

A full capacitor charge is enough to run the vehicle’s electrical systems for a minute or so. During stop-and-go city driving, charging often resumes before the capacitor is fully discharged. Regenerative braking can therefore produce most – and sometimes all – of a vehicle’s electricity needs. These needs normally require some 10% of engine output to drive the alternator. Regenerative braking thus increases fuel economy by up to 10%.

SKYACTIV technology

Mazda’s New Generation Breakthrough technology

Engines, transmissions, body and chassis: Mazda’s all-new range of SKYACTIV technologies are designed to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the company’s new generation of vehicles, while at the same time further enhancing safety and driving pleasure.

Back in 2007, Mazda devised its “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” strategy, which calls for a staggering 30% increase in fuel economy (based on 2008 levels) for all Mazda vehicles offered worldwide by 2015. This corresponds to a 23% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Internal combustion engines will still power more than 80% of vehicles in 2020. Today’s versions operate at only 30 – 40% efficiency, however, so there is much room for improvement. Defying convention, Mazda’s engineers focused on internal combustion with one goal: achieving ideal combustion. This is the basis for the new generation of Mazda models featuring SKYACTIV technologies (engines, transmissions, body and chassis) in all production models – and not just pricey “green” variants. It underscores the company’s uncompromising commitment to improving environmental sustainability and vehicle safety, while retaining outstanding driving pleasure as the core characteristic of all Mazda products.

Mazda plans to achieve its ambitious objectives using the company’s building block strategy, a phase model for the step-by-step introduction of auxiliary electrical systems (such as i-stop and i-ELOOP) to SKYACTIV powertrains.

4. Mazda MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012

With more than 900,000 units produced since its introduction two decades ago, Mazda’s legendary MX-5 is the best-selling roadster in history. From the beginning, the uniquely successful formula has been pure Zoom-Zoom fun blended into a durable and reliable package accessible to a broad customer base. While remaining faithful to this tradition, the new MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012 on stage at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show has also been given an undeniably premium flair.

It starts with four body colours including Radiant Ebony – exclusively for this model – along with Brilliant Black, Metropolitan Grey and Crystal White Pearl*, and 17-inch alloy wheels in a refined exclusive light gunmetal finish.

The sophisticated look continues with chrome headlamp inserts, front bumper grille surrounds, fog lamp bezels and door-handle trim, as well as the third brake light’s white lens.

On the inside, the seats are upholstered in “Havana Brown” premium leather with grey contrast stitching, matching the same-colour door inserts. For an extra touch of class, special new interior elements include the piano black decoration panel and brilliant black roll bar trim, chrome rings for the gauges and air vents, and silver door handles and speaker rings. The new MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012 also features for the first time Mazda’s navigation system based on TomTom® technology. The audio system does not only feature AUX and USB, but also full iPod® connectivity (cable as accessory).

True to the spirit of Zoom-Zoom, the new MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012 boasts perfect 50:50 weight distribution and an exciting power-toweight ratio. This power is delivered by a 126 PS 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. Right-hand drive models are also available with a 160 PS 2.0-litre petrol powerplant coupled to a 6-speed manual. The 1.8-litre features a soft top or retractable hardtop*, while the 2.0-litre comes with a retractable hardtop only.

What all models have in common is the MX-5’s legendary performance and agile handling. Sticking to its roots, the new MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012 is also economical to operate – in spite of the luxurious features – with notably modest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

At a glance – Mazda MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012
